Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw delivered a clear message to social media behemoths on Thursday: share the wealth fairly with those who create the content driving your profits. From seasoned journalists and legacy media outlets to influencers, rural creators, professors, and researchers, everyone uploading valuable material deserves a transparent slice of the revenue pie.

‘Platforms thrive because of the content from news professionals, remote creators, influencers, academics, and more,’ Vaishnaw asserted. He advocated embedding fairness in revenue distribution as a cornerstone of India’s digital ecosystem.

The call for equity arrives as the government ramps up oversight on online platforms. Paralleling this, MeitY’s proposed updates to the 2021 IT Rules aim to combat the surge in deepfakes and deceptive AI content.

Key provisions mandate explicit labeling of artificially generated material with indelible metadata. Platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Snapchat – those serving 50 lakh-plus Indian users – must ensure AI content is flagged prominently.

Visual identifiers will cover no less than 10% of video or image frames, and audio segments require marking in their initial 10%. Tampering with metadata invites penalties, classifying it as negligence under IT laws.

Vaishnaw stressed that genuine revenue transparency will invigorate India’s content creation sector, fostering innovation and sustainability. With stricter norms on horizon, platforms must rethink exploitative models to support the very creators powering their growth.

India’s content creators are celebrating a series of transformative measures in the Union Budget 2026. The government’s move to set up 15,000 AVGC labs in schools and 500 in colleges marks a bold step toward formalizing the creator economy. These labs will focus on nurturing talent in animation, gaming, and video production. For creators focusing on heritage and culture, the National Destination Digital Knowledge Grid will act as a valuable resource, fueling a boom in short-form videos and documentaries. The budget also includes the founding of a National Design Institution in the East and IIM-led training for 10,000 tourist guides to foster collaborations with travel creators. Enhanced narrative tools at 15 key historical sites, including Leh Palace and Dholavira, further support high-quality content production. With massive allocations for broadcasting infrastructure, the budget paves the way for a creative renaissance.

Actor Amit Sadh recently found himself in the spotlight after an unexpected interaction with street photography content creators in Delhi’s Khan Market. The creators from @therealstreets_ approached Sadh for portraits but admitted they couldn’t immediately recall his name. Sadh responded with humor, playfully asking if they were paying in bitcoins and joking about his acting fees.
The YouTube Silver Play Button is a coveted award for content creators. This article clarifies the criteria for receiving the Silver Button and dispels misconceptions about its requirements. The award is granted by YouTube to creators who achieve 100,000 subscribers. It is important to note that the Silver Button is awarded based on subscriber count, not the number of views a channel receives. To qualify for the Silver Button, a channel must adhere to YouTube’s community guidelines and monetization policies. This includes ensuring original content, avoiding copyright strikes, and maintaining an active channel. Upon reaching the subscriber milestone, YouTube reviews the channel, and if approved, the creator can claim their Silver Button. After Silver Button, Gold, Diamond, and Red Diamond Buttons are also awarded for higher subscriber counts.

Google is implementing significant changes to YouTube’s live streaming policies, with the aim of enhancing child safety. The new rules, effective July 22nd, raise the minimum age for live streaming from 13 to 16 years old. This shift means that individuals under 16 will no longer be able to independently host live streams. YouTube states that these updates are part of their ongoing efforts to protect minors and mitigate risks associated with online interactions.

Under the updated policy, adolescents under 16 can still participate in live streams, but only under specific conditions, such as co-streaming with an adult. If this condition is not met, YouTube may disable the live chat or remove the stream entirely. This policy change may pose challenges for young creators who wish to stream independently, as they will now need to involve a parent or adult channel manager. While the new restrictions may disappoint some aspiring youth, YouTube emphasizes that the safety of minors is their top priority.

Numerous Instagram users are reporting widespread account suspensions and bans, leading to significant concern and speculation. Users have taken to platforms like Reddit and X to share their experiences, with many claiming they adhered to platform rules yet were still locked out of their accounts. Some users state they haven’t received any responses after repeated attempts to verify their identities with Meta, Instagram’s parent company. The company has yet to address the issue publicly, leaving many confused and frustrated. Businesses and creators are bearing the brunt of these actions, with many reporting the loss of their livelihoods. The situation has prompted a petition on Change.org and increasing complaints on X, with some users considering legal action. The suspected cause is AI moderation tools, with some drawing parallels to similar issues on Pinterest. Meta’s silence on the matter is further fueling the users’ concerns and frustration.
