NEW DELHI: The Congress will get a new party chief by mid-2022 as the party on Saturday rolled out a schedule for organisational elections from the block level to the president with Rahul Gandhi indicating he would be ready to lead again.

After a five-hour long Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, it was announced that the election of the new Congress president will be held between August 21 and September 20 and the AICC plenary will be held by October next year.

Sonia Gandhi took over as the interim chief in 2019 after Rahul resigned taking responsibility for the party’s debacle in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The last election to the Congress Working  Committee (CWC) was held in 1997.

During the CWC meeting, several senior leaders, including chief ministers of the three Congress-ruled states, urged Rahul to become the president. Senior party leader Meira Kumar said none other than Rahul would be acceptable to party workers and it was not a “diamond crown but of thorns”.

Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot also said Rahul had stopped political discussions with him and he should take over and all would agree to his decisions. Rahul said he would consider but he needed to be convinced about the ideology of party leaders and what they think the Congress stood for.

Rahul referred to the appointment of Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi and how the latter started crying when he called him. Rahul said the party was ready to give voice to women, Scheduled Castes, minorities and the poor and he was ready to work for them.

He lauded sister Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra’s action in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident but said the party needed to be swift in action and not take too long. With several party leaders leaving the party, Priyanka said those who want to leave could go and but those who wanted to continue needed to follow the party’s ideology, which is not negotiable.

On the Trinamool Congress’ targeting of the Congress leadership, many said the party must reconsider its plan to reach out to Mamata Banerjee. On political strategist Prashant Kishor’s induction in the party, the CWC members felt the need to adopt modern tools and election strategy but there was no need for Kishor.

There is no need to speak to me through the media. So let us all have a free and honest discussion,” she asserted.

  • I’m full-time, hands-on Congress president: Sonia Gandhi’s message to ‘G23’ at CWC meet

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Days after some sections within the Congress questioned the absence of an elected party chief, Sonia Gandhi on Saturday asserted that she is a full-time, hands-on party president and leaders need not speak to her through the media.

Without naming anyone, Gandhi, in a message to the G23, said at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting that while every member wants the party’s revival, it can happen only with unity, self-control, discipline and by keeping the party’s interests paramount.

Her remarks came after some leaders of the group of 23, including Kapil Sibal, who had sought organisational overhaul, recently questioned who in the Congress was taking decisions in the absence of a full-time party president.

Ghulam Nabi Azad and Sibal had also demanded an early meeting of the CWC to discuss the declining fortunes of the party in the wake of recent defections.

“I am, if you will allow me to say so, a full-time and hands-on Congress president,” Sonia Gandhi asserted.

The 74-year-old leader underscored that she has always appreciated frankness and in a veiled message to G23 leaders, including Sibal who recently questioned the decision-making process in the party, said “there is no need to speak to me through the media”.

“So, let us all have a free and honest discussion. But what should get communicated outside the four walls of this room is the collective decision of the CWC,” she said in her opening remarks at the meeting.

Gandhi also placed on the table the party’s organisational election schedule before the CWC.

She also pointed out that in the last two years, a large number of Congress leaders, particularly the younger ones, have taken on leadership roles in communicating party policies and programmes to the people.

“Never have we let issues of public importance and concern go unaddressed. You are aware that I have been taking them up with the Prime Minister as have Dr Manmohan Singh and Rahul (Gandhi) ji. I have been interacting with like-minded political parties regularly,” she said and added that the Opposition parties have issued joint statements on national issues and coordinated our strategy in Parliament as well.

About the forthcoming assembly elections, the Congress chief said the party’s preparations had already begun a while back and asserted that though there were many challenges, “if we are united, disciplined and focus on the party’s interests alone, I am confident that we will do well”.

Elaborating on the issues facing the country, the Congress chief noted the CWC is meeting in the background of the continuing agitation by farmers and that it has been over a year since the “three black (farm) laws were bulldozed through Parliament”.

Referring to the Lakhimpur Kheri violence in which four farmers were mowed down by an SUV on October 3, she said the shocking incident shows the mindset of the BJP as to how it perceives the farmers’ movement and how it has been dealing with this determined struggle by the farmers to protect their lives and livelihoods.

Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra, who has been named in an FIR, was arrested on Saturday by the Uttar Pradesh Police in connection with the mowing down of four farmers on October 3 in Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh.

In her remarks, Gandhi also alleged that the government’s only answer for economic recovery is selling off national assets and its single-point agenda was “becho, becho, becho (sell, sell, sell)”.

Noting that the Government of India has changed its vaccine procurement policy since the CWC last met in May, she said this has been done in response to the states’ demands and was one of those rare occasions when the states were heard and the country benefitted.

“Even so, cooperative federalism remains only a slogan and the Centre loses no opportunity to put non-BJP states at a disadvantage,” she alleged.

Gandhi also flagged concerns over the sudden spurt in killings in Jammu and Kashmir and said minorities have been targeted.

“This must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.”

She also hit out at the government over its foreign policy and said a broad consensus that has been there on it always has been damaged because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “continued reluctance to take the Opposition into confidence in any meaningful manner”.

“Foreign policy has become a diabolical instrument of electoral mobilisation and polarisation,” Gandhi alleged.

“We face serious challenges on our borders and other fronts. The prime minister telling the opposition leaders last year that there had not been any occupation of our territory by China and his silence ever since is costing our nation dearly.”

  • Every Congress member wants revival, but that requires unity: Sonia Gandhi at CWC

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: In an apparent message to the G23, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Saturday said she is a full-time, hands-on party president and there is no need for leaders to speak to her through the media.

Her remarks came days after Kapil Sibal, one of the leaders of the group of 23 who had written to Sonia Gandhi for organisational overhaul last year, demanded that an immediate meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) be convened and wondered who in the party was taking decisions in the absence of a full-time president.

In her opening remarks at the CWC meeting, Gandhi asserted that every member of the party wants a revival of the Congress, but that requires unity and keeping the party’s interests paramount.

“Above all, it requires self-control and discipline,” she added.

Recalling that the Congress had finalised a roadmap for electing a regular Congress chief by June 30 but that deadline was extended indefinitely due to Covid second wave, Sonia Gandhi said that today was the occasion for bringing clarity once and for all on the issue of the organisational polls.

A schedule for full-fledged organizational elections had been put before the CWC members, she said.

“I am, if you will allow me to say so, a full-time and hands-on Congress president,” Gandhi said, which is seen by many as a response to Sibal’s comments last month.

Sonia Gandhi also asserted that she has always appreciated frankness and there was no need to speak to her through the media.

“So let us all have a free and honest discussion. But what should get communicated outside the four walls of this room is the collective decision of the CWC,” she said.

Sonia Gandhi, former chief Rahul Gandhi, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress chief ministers Ashok Gehlot of Rajasthan, Bhupesh Baghel of Chhattisgarh and Charanjit Channi of Punjab attended the meeting.

Senior leaders and G23 leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma were among those present at the meeting at the All India Congress Committee headquarters here.

  • Congress to sideline leadership debate as party focuses on upcoming polls in seven states

    Express News Service

NEW DELHI: Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi is likely to continue as the party’s president till the end of 2022 putting the leadership issue on backburner for now as the party is focusing on restructuring of state units, an organisational revamp and improving the electoral fortunes in the upcoming assembly elections.

After elections to the post of party chief were deferred multiple times, Congress, in June this year, said that the issue is being temporarily postponed for 2-3 months.

According to party sources, there is no hurry to settle leadership issue for the time being and a new party chief is likely to be elected after assembly elections in seven states are over next year.

As per party’s constitution, the term of new Congress president will finish in 2022, after a tenure of five years, as Rahul Gandhi was appointed Congress chief in 2017.

“This party’s performance in assembly elections would boost the chances of the return of Rahul Gandhi as party chief, if he wants to take over the reins. The focus is to revamp the state units before organizational restructuring keeping an eye on 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This impact of changes will be a testing ground during assembly elections and that is why we have seen some proactive decisions by leadership,” said a senior party leader.

The demand for a fulltime party chief has been pending since Rahul Gandhi quit the post after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

“Rahul has been taking all the decisions along with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and then what is stopping him from officially taking over from Sonia. This sends the wrong message to the entire party and demoralises party workers,” said a leader from the dissident group on request of staying anonymous.

A group of 23 senior party leaders who have been repeatedly raking up issues related to the leadership vacuum at the top had met Sonia Gandhi early this year to share their concerns over the grand old party’s losing connection with common people.

The state units are expected to see elevation of several young leaders at prominent posts and the party is looking to induct atleast a dozen of young faces, including former JNU student union chief Kanhaiya Kumar and independent Gujarat Jigesh Mevani in coming days, who could work at national level.

Getting poll strategist Prashant Kishor is also the party’s strategy for the 2024 elections.

  • Election for Congress president’s post may be pushed to next year

    Express News Service
NEW DELHI: It has been nearly two years since Sonia Gandhi took over as interim president of the Congress, but there seems to be no clarity on the next party chief. Elections to the post have been postponed thrice in the last one-and-half years and may be delayed further, with Rahul Gandhi looking to first completely overhaul the party organisation before a new chief is elected.

The elections were scheduled by June-end but were pushed back due to the Covid-19 situation in the country. Congress general secretary (orgnaisation) K C Venugopal had then stated that the deferment was only for two-three months. However, party sources said there is no word on tentative dates to hold the elections. Rahul is focusing on a rejig in Pradesh Congress Committees and the AICC and also firefighting troubles in several state units ahead of assembly polls early next year, they said.

“We have a month-long monsoon session of Parliament starting next week and with several health experts signalling the possibility of a third Covid-19 wave by September-October, the party election is most likely to be pushed post assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, due by February next year,” said a party source. A senior Congress leader said Rahul wants to completely overhaul the organisation before someone takes over as party president. “There is still ambiguity on whether he (Rahul) will take over the reins of the party or it will be someone else,” the leader said.

Congress units in over a dozen key states, including Haryana, Gujarat, Punjab, UP, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, are expected to see changes. Appointments are also due for national office bearers and ongoing tussle among state leadership in Rajasthan, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Karnataka, Uttarakhand and Himachal units needs to be addressed as well.

The demand for a full-time party chief has been pending since Rahul quit after 2019 Lok Sabha polls. As per the party constitution, the term of the Congress president will end in 2022 after a five-year tenure as Rahul was appointed in 2017. A group of 23 senior party leaders have been repeatedly raking up the leadership vacuum and had met Sonia early this year to share their concerns over the party losing connect with common people.

  • Delhi Congress passes resolution requesting Rahul Gandhi to take over as party chief

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: The Delhi Congress on Sunday passed three resolutions, including requesting Rahul Gandhi to take over as national president of the party. The other two resolutions passed during a meeting of party senior leaders sought the resignation of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, a party statement said.

The meeting was also attended by AICC general secretary and in-charge of Delhi, Shaktisinh Gohil. “The party passed three resolutions unanimously, requesting Rahul Gandhi to take over as the president of the Indian National Congress, and demanding the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for their ‘failures’,” the statement said.

Delhi Congress president Anil Kumar moved the resolutions. “Considering the disturbed and dangerous political situation in the country, Congress needs a dynamic and powerful leader like Rahul Gandhi at the helm,” he said.

Kumar said Gandhi has been waging a determined battle to expose the “misdeeds” of the central government, and that his leading from the front as Congress president was an urgent need to boost the confidence and morale of party workers.

The party statement said that the other resolutions demanded the resignation of Shah and Kejriwal for their “mishandling” of the farmers tractor rally on January 26 and the subsequent violence in Delhi. No immediate reaction was available from the BJP or AAP on the Delhi Congress resolutions.

Gohil underlined that it was time for Congress workers to close ranks and work unitedly to strengthen the party in Delhi, by following the directions and guidelines of party president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

The meeting was attended by former Union ministers Jagdish Tytler and Krishna Tirath, ex-MP Ramesh Kumar, and Kiran Walia, Haroon Yusuf, among others.

  • PM has ‘fled’ his ‘open book Rafale exam’ in Parliament: Rahul

Escalating his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the the Rafale deal issue, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi Thursday said it seems the PM has “fled” his “open book Rafale exam” in Parliament and is instead lecturing students in Punjab.
Gandhi’s attack came a day after he said Modi faced an open book exam on the deal in Parliament and asked if he will show up at the exam or send a proxy.
The Congress president had Wednesday also tweeted four questions related to the Rafale deal and demanded answers from the prime minister.
“So it seems our PM has fled Parliament & his own open book Rafale exam & is instead lecturing students at Lovely University in Punjab, today,” Gandhi tweeted on Thursday.
He also urged students at the university to ask the prime minister to answer the four questions posed by him.
Gandhi had tweeted, “Here are the exam questions in advance: Q1. Why 36 aircraft, instead of the 126 the IAF needed? Q2. Why 1,600 Cr instead of 560 Cr per aircraft. Q4. Why AA instead of HAL? Will he show up? Or send a proxy?”
He later tweeted another question, terming it as “The Missing Q3!”.
In the third question, he asked the prime minister to tell why former defence minister Manohar Parrikar keeps a Rafale file in his bedroom and what’s in it.
