Sarojini Naidu, eternally etched as the Nightingale of India, transformed words into weapons of resistance. Her verses, rich with rhythm and emotion, stirred the hearts of millions during the independence era. Gandhi’s moniker ‘India’s Kokila’ was no exaggeration—her voice was the song of a sovereign future.

From her precocious start at age 12, Naidu’s poetry captured India’s essence: the clamor of bazaars, the whisper of monsoons, the dreams of the oppressed. Drawing from Romantic traditions, she crafted imagery that was both universal and uniquely desi, making colonial masters uncomfortable with their beauty and bite.

Key works like ‘The Golden Threshold’ painted poetic portraits of daily Indian life, while ‘In the Bazaars of Hyderabad’ mocked foreign goods, boosting Swadeshi pride. ‘The Bird of Time’ explored life’s cycles with nationalist zeal, and ‘The Sceptred Flute’ compiled her timeless odes to the motherland.

Beyond ink, Naidu was a political powerhouse. Elected Congress president in 1925, she rallied crowds from Kanpur to Kanpur’s global outposts. Her arrest during civil disobedience underscored her fearlessness. After 1947, governing Uttar Pradesh, she pushed for women’s empowerment, insisting service to country knew no gender.

Naidu’s fusion of art and activism redefined leadership. Her famous lines in ‘Coromandel Fishers’ called fishermen to awaken, mirroring her summons to the nation. As we mark her passing on March 2, her enduring spirit reminds us that true freedom begins in the poet’s heart.

Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court has directed Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge to appear in connection with allegations of hate speech at a Karnataka rally last year. The notice comes after a prolonged legal battle initiated by an RSS worker.

Ravindra Gupta, the complainant, accused Kharge of targeting the RSS and PM Modi with derogatory and provocative statements during an April 2023 event in Naregal amid the Karnataka assembly elections. Gupta claims the speech violated laws against promoting enmity.

The journey to this point has been circuitous. Tis Hazari Court dismissed the plea in November 2024, but Gupta’s appeal revived it at the sessions level. A prior December 2024 hearing also saw no FIR ordered against Kharge.

The court’s February 27, 2025, date marks a critical juncture. Kharge, a seasoned politician, faces this amid Congress’s efforts to regroup post-election setbacks.

Political observers see this as part of a broader pattern where opposition leaders’ speeches are scrutinized, often leading to courtroom dramas. Supporters of Kharge dismiss it as a politically motivated vendetta by the BJP-RSS ecosystem.

With elections always around the corner in India, such cases underscore the razor-thin line between fiery oratory and legal overreach. Kharge’s response could influence public perception and his party’s narrative on free speech.

On National Youth Day, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge remembered Swami Vivekananda, wishing the youth strength and inspiration from the sage’s profound wisdom. Observed annually on January 12, the day commemorates Vivekananda’s birth and his enduring legacy.

Kharge’s message comes at a pivotal moment for India’s youth, who form over 65% of the population. He praised Vivekananda as the architect of national awakening, whose ideas on youth power shaped leaders like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and countless freedom fighters.

In his social media post, Kharge quoted Vivekananda: ‘You have to grow from the inside out. None can teach you, none can make you spiritual. There is no other teacher but your own soul.’ He linked this to contemporary issues like unemployment, mental health, and digital revolution, calling for inner strength among the young.

Vivekananda’s global impact began with his electrifying address in Chicago, where he declared, ‘Sisters and brothers of America,’ captivating the audience. Kharge urged the youth to channel this fearless spirit to build an inclusive India free from caste and religious divides.

Across states, vibrant programs mark the day. From Ramakrishna Mission centers to government initiatives, focus remains on skill development and entrepreneurship. Kharge reiterated Congress’s manifesto promises on youth jobs, education loans, and startup ecosystems.

Reflecting on Vivekananda’s mantra of ‘Man-making religion,’ Kharge stressed holistic development. As political narratives heat up ahead of polls, this tribute positions Congress as the party upholding cultural icons for modern progress. Vivekananda’s vision of a youthful, awakened India remains a beacon for the future.
