  • Russia Admits To World’s Third Highest COVID-19 Fatalities; 186,000 People Have Died

    In a shocking revelation, Russian health authorities, on December 28, said that country’s death toll was three times higher than what was previously reported. While President Vladimir Putin had long boasted about the country’s low COVID-19 death toll, experts have constantly argued that the majority of deaths were caused by the respiratory infection. However, health officials have now admitted that over 186,000 deaths were caused by COVID-19 alone nixing comparatively low numbers, which were reported only when coronavirus was found to be the main cause of death.

    As per the Rosstat statistics agency, the number of deaths from all causes recorded between January and November had risen by 229,700 compared with the previous year. Speaking about the same, Tatiana Golikova, deputy Prime minister reportedly admitted that more than 81 per cent of this spike, that is 186,000, in mortality was due to COVID-19. According to previous records by Russian Heath Ministry, as many as 3,047,335 people have contracted COVID-19 in Russia while only 54,559 people had lost their lives.

  • UK To Ban ‘buy One Get One’ And Free Refills On Unhealthy Food Items From April 2022

    In a push to citizens to make healthy choices, Britain is set to ban promotional tactics on unhealthy food items such as ‘Buy one get one free’ offers and refills of sugary soft drinks in restaurants from April 2022. To tackle one of the most prevalent health issues in the nation, obesity, the British government on December 28 said that it is planning to restrict food that is high in fat, sugar, or salt. As per reports, nearly two-thirds of adults in England are overweight leading one in four children to leave primary school overweight or obese. 

    The promotions will also be restricted in stores including on products that can be advertised and the unhealthy promotions will not be present at the checkouts, entrances or even at the end of aisles. As per reports, Britain’s health minister Jo Churchill said that the government is “restricting promotions” in order to ensure a range of measures to ensure “healthy choice is the easy choice”. According to the minister, it would further create an environment that helps the individual to eat comparatively healthier foods regularly and it is crucial to improve the health of the citizens.

  • Joe Biden, Kamala Harris To Take Oath At US Capitol Next Month In Virtual Ceremony

    US Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) announced on December 15 that President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will take the oath of office at US Capitol next month. This comes after the Electoral College officially declared Joe Biden to be the next President of the US with 306 votes. However, in an update, the committee informed that the ceremony will be comparatively smaller due to the COVID-19 pandemic as it urged the people not to travel for the inauguration on January 20.

    In a press release, the Inaugural Committee stated that the ceremony will be scaled down to limited capacity with rigorous health and safety protocols. The President and the Vice President will be sworn in the tradition that started in 1801 with the first US President Thomas Jefferson taking oath in Washington.  According to the release, the committee was planning an event along with the Joint Congressional Committee honour the American tradition, however keeping it safe for safe from the spread of the novel coronavirus.

  • BJP runs Govt ‘comparatively better’ than Cong: Rajnath

    Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday claimed that the BJP has run the Government “comparatively better” than the Congress and blamed the Opposition party for a “credibility crisis” in politics after Independence.

    Talking to reporters in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh, Singh asserted that the country was currently witnessing “achchhe din” (good days) and it was a matter of perception how people saw it.

    He also defended BJP-led Government at the Centre over the Rafale jet deal row.

    “Indian economy is the fastest growing economy in the world due to the charismatic work of our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi). India (people) has accepted that BJP is a political party which runs the Government comparatively better than the Congress,” Singh told reporters here.

    “I said comparatively… No political party is perfect, neither are we, I never made such a claim. All political parties have shortcomings. But this (BJP) is a political party which works better, comparatively,” he asserted.
