India is celebrating 79 years of independence. This is a moment of joy. The country gained freedom after a long struggle and the sacrifices of lakhs of soldiers. It is a day when every citizen of the country is proud of their nation and celebrates this day as a festival. Bollywood has made many films on patriotism. There are so many songs related to the feeling of patriotism in these films that will bring enthusiasm to your mind. India’s legendary singer Mohammed Rafi sang songs of all kinds during his career. He has also sung many patriotic songs. On the occasion of Independence Day, we bring you 5 such patriotic songs by Rafi Sahab that will stir your blood.

### Kar Chale Hum Fida
This song was from the 1964 film Haqeeqat. It was featured on Dharmendra and Vijay Anand and was sung with great heart by Rafi Sahab. Even today, the popularity of this song remains the same. The lyrics were written by Kaifi Azmi and the music for this beautiful song was given by Madan Mohan.

### Ye Desh Hai Veer Jawano Ka
Although this song is from the 1956 film Naya Daur starring Dilip Kumar and Ajit, it still feels as new today and also fills the younger generation with enthusiasm. The special thing about this song is that it was sung by Rafi Sahab with Balbir. Sahir Ludhianvi wrote the lyrics and O.P. Nayyar composed the music.

### Jahan Dal Dal Par
Mohammed Rafi also sang some songs apart from films, including this song. Jahan dal dal par sone ki chidiya karti hai basera, wo Bharat desh hai mera (Where golden birds nest on every branch, that is my India). Listening to this song, every countryman becomes emotional. Rajendra Krishnan wrote this song and Hansraj Behl composed the music for this song.

### Hum Laye Hain Toofan Se Kashti
Rafi Sahab sang this song from the 1954 film Jaagriti. Whenever you listen to this song, you will definitely remember your childhood. The song was sung by Rafi Sahab with great sweetness. Its wonderful lyrics were written by Kavi Pradeep and its music was given by legendary singer and musician Hemant Kumar.

### Taqat Watan Ki Humse Hai
Who can forget this song from Dev Anand’s film Prem Pujari? This song was sung together by Mohammed Rafi and Manna Dey. At that time, it was considered one of the most energetic songs and still has no match. This song was written by Gopal Das Neeraj and its music was composed by S. D. Burman.

Apart from these 5 songs, Mohammed Rafi also sang many patriotic songs which still come to people’s lips. This includes the song Apni Azadi Ko Hum Hargiz Mita Sakte Nahin from the film Leader, Mere Desh Mein Pawan Chale Purvai from Jurm Aur Saza, and Vatan Par Jo Fida Hoga from Phool Bane Angaare, among many other songs. Patriotic songs are still being made today. But listening to the patriotic songs of Bollywood’s golden era, a person not only goes on a journey of golden memories but also cannot help but be emotional towards the country.

The author recalls asking Lata Mangeshkar every Raksha Bandhan if he was her favorite brother. Her response, with a laugh, was always that her brother Hridaynath came first. Lata Mangeshkar wasn’t keen on listening to her own songs, especially those considered classics, as she would find flaws in them. However, she loved her Raksha Bandhan songs. The song ‘Rang birangi rakhi lekar aye behna’ from ‘Anpadh’ was easy for her to render because composer Madan Mohan was her rakhi brother. She also cherished the sibling song ‘Phoolon ka taaron ka sabka kehna hai ek hazaaron mein meri behna hai,’ where she sang for the child actor playing young Dev Anand, finding the challenge of sounding like a little boy expressing love for his sister, despite being a 40-year-old woman. Lata Mangeshkar also loved ‘Bhaiya mere rakhi ke bandhan ko nibhana’ from ‘Choti Bahen,’ and her favorite Raksha Bandhan song was ‘Chanda re mere bhaiyya se kehna behna yaad kare’ from ‘Chambal Ki Kasam.’ When asked how she attained such emotional expression in the song, she confessed she thought of how Raksha Bandhan would be if her own brother Hridaynath was not with her to celebrate the occasion.

Madan Mohan’s musical legacy extends far beyond the realm of ghazals, encompassing love songs, bhajans, and patriotic anthems that have stood the test of time. He transcends the label of a gifted composer of the 1950s, holding a special place in the hearts of music lovers that grows more significant with each passing year.

His compositions for Talat Mahmood (Phir wohi sham), Mohammed Rafi (Tum jo mil gaye ho), Manna Dey (Kaun aaya mere man ke dware), and Asha Bhosle (Jhumka gira re) are considered masterpieces. His ability to compose intuitively allowed for the creation of iconic songs like Lata Mangeshkar’s ‘Aapki nazron ne samjha’ and ‘Lag ja gale.’

Singers vied to interpret his compositions, but Lata Mangeshkar was his preferred vocalist. He recognized her unique ability to elevate his tunes to sublime heights. Their collaboration produced timeless classics such as ‘Meri aankhon se koi,’ ‘Woh chup rahen to,’ ‘Zara si aahat,’ ‘Tere bin sawan kaise beeta,’ and ‘Duniya bananewale yehi hai meri iltija,’ representing the pinnacle of creative achievement.

The combination of Madan Mohan and Lata Mangeshkar’s creative genius caused frustration among other singers. Manna Dey and Asha Bhosle expressed their disappointment at not being given the opportunity to sing his songs. However, their collaboration remains an extraordinary example of musical synergy.

The extent of their collaboration remains largely unexplored, with many songs composed for Lata Mangeshkar that were never recorded or released. The composer didn’t win an award until 1971, when he received the National Award for Dastak. He ensured that every score, song, note, and instrumentation was flawless, as seen in his work in Jahan Ara.

His greatness was recognized posthumously, with his songs in Laila Majnu achieving immense popularity after his passing. His work continues to resonate with audiences, cementing his status as a legendary composer.
