New Delhi is making strides in eco-friendly packaging as FSSAI greenlights 17 rPET production units. The PET Recycling Alliance India celebrated the move on Monday, stating it will fortify the nation’s packaging ecosystem.

With this approval, around 300,000 tons of food-grade rPET can be produced yearly, directly aiding the 40% recycled material goal in packaging by 2026-27. These plants will cater to the food and beverage sector’s needs for compliant packaging.

Gautam Jain of APR India emphasized the timing’s relevance amid global virgin PET supply disruptions due to conflicts like Iran-Israel. Echoing PM Modi’s circular economy push, it dovetails with regulations requiring 30% post-consumer recycled content starting 2025-26, scaling to 60% by 2028-29.

Investments totaling Rs 9,000-10,000 crore have fueled 15-18 advanced recycling plants across India. Equipped with state-of-the-art tech matching EFSA and FDA benchmarks, they ensure top safety standards.

Key enablers include the 2021 Environment Ministry nod for rPET in food contact and a 2025 relaxation allowing phased compliance for the initial 30% mandate.

As India tackles plastic waste, this approval signals a commitment to sustainability, potentially slashing virgin plastic use and fostering innovation in recycling. Industry leaders see it as a blueprint for global circular practices.
