Rumors of TikTok’s re-entry into India have been circulating, but the government has now clarified its position. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has made it clear that there are no plans to lift the ban on the Chinese short-video platform. Vaishnaw, in an interview with Moneycontrol, stated that there has been no discussion on the matter. He was responding to speculation about ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, preparing to return to India. These speculations gained traction after TikTok’s website briefly became accessible on some broadband and mobile networks, including Airtel and Vodafone, last month. This minor glitch sparked social media buzz about a possible app comeback, but authorities have now clarified that this will not happen. TikTok was banned in India in June 2020. The central government blocked 59 Chinese apps, citing national security and data privacy concerns. Following the ban, Apple and Google also removed these apps from their stores, and the ban was made permanent in January 2021. India had the largest user base for TikTok at the time, with over 200 million users on the platform. Before the ban, Chinese investors like Tencent, Alibaba, Ant Financial, and Shunwei Capital were the biggest supporters of Indian startups. They had invested heavily in sectors such as e-commerce, fintech, food delivery, mobility, digital content, and education technology.

Rumors have been circulating rapidly on social media and in the tech world that TikTok is making a comeback in India. This speculation stems from the app briefly opening and the company starting new hiring in its Gurugram office. However, what is the truth? Answers to these questions are provided here.

TikTok remains banned in India. Both TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, and the Indian government have made it clear that the app is still banned in the country, and there is no immediate prospect of a return. According to the Indian government, no order has been issued to unblock TikTok. The app is still unavailable on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. The ministry has labeled reports of TikTok’s return as rumors.

Despite the ban, TikTok has begun hiring for its Gurugram office in India. Job postings, including Content Moderator (Bengali Speaker) and Wellbeing Partnership & Operations Lead, have been published on LinkedIn and other professional sites. This has led users to believe that TikTok might be returning to India.

The Indian government banned TikTok, along with 59 other Chinese apps, in June 2020. The reasons behind the ban included data security concerns, fears of data transfer to China, and threats to national security.

Following the TikTok ban, several local short video apps gained popularity in India, including Moj, Josh, and MX TakaTak. However, Instagram Reels benefited the most, becoming the most popular short video platform in the country.

The company’s new hiring in India suggests it is still keeping an eye on the market. For a potential return, TikTok would need to establish local data servers in India and comply with regulations and safety standards. New approvals would also be required from the government, similar to how Krafton followed local server and new rules to bring back BGMI (PUBG Mobile) to India.

The Indian government has reiterated its decision, stating that the popular Chinese app TikTok will not be allowed to re-enter the Indian market. This announcement comes in response to recent social media speculation regarding TikTok’s potential return to India. The government’s statement confirms that the doors remain closed for the app.

Before its ban, TikTok had a substantial user base in India. Reports indicate that the platform had over 200 million active users in the country. India accounted for the largest number of TikTok downloads globally. Prior to the 2020 ban, India was TikTok’s biggest market, experiencing rapid growth in popularity. However, the government banned the app, citing national security and data privacy concerns.

The ban on TikTok, along with 58 other Chinese apps, was implemented in June 2020. This decision was made to protect the country’s security and user privacy. The government believed that these apps were transferring Indian users’ data to servers outside the country, posing a potential threat to national security.

Rumors of TikTok’s return have been circulating on social media, suggesting a possible launch in India through a partnership with an Indian company. Some reports claimed that ByteDance, the app’s developer, had planned a comeback. However, the government has officially clarified that TikTok’s return is not feasible.

Following TikTok’s ban, several domestic short video platforms gained popularity in India. These included Moj, Josh, Chingari, and Roposo. These apps offered users an experience similar to TikTok, attracting millions of users.
