Divya Deshmukh, a 19-year-old chess player, is making a significant impact in the sport. Her achievements include a World Cup title, Olympic gold medals, and victories against top players, solidifying her position in the chess world. Born on December 9, 2005, Deshmukh has rapidly climbed the ranks. She secured the Women’s Chess World Cup 2025, defeating formidable opponents like Zhu Jiner, Harika Dronavalli, and Tan Zhongyi, and then Koneru Humpy in a tiebreak. This victory earned her the Grandmaster title, making her the 88th Grandmaster from India and only the fourth Indian woman to achieve this. Her success also qualified her for the Women’s Candidates Tournament 2026, putting her in contention for the Women’s World Championship. In 2024, Deshmukh also played a crucial role in India’s gold medal win at the 45th Chess Olympiad, where she earned an individual gold medal with a performance rating of 2608. She also won the World U20 Chess Championship in 2024, becoming the fourth Indian woman to achieve this title. A notable moment came in the 2025 World Rapid and Blitz Team Chess Championships where she defeated Hou Yifan, the world’s top-ranked female chess player, in a 74-move endgame, contributing to her team’s bronze medal. At the FIDE Grand Swiss 2025, Deshmukh drew with World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju after a 103-move game, demonstrating her ability to compete at the highest level. Her accomplishments include World Cup winner, Grandmaster, Olympiad gold medalist, and U20 World Champion. Deshmukh is considered a symbol of the growing depth of women’s chess in India, with a promising future ahead.

D Gukesh experienced a challenging turn of events, facing his third consecutive defeat at the FIDE Grand Swiss 2025. The latest loss came against 16-year-old Turkish chess prodigy Ediz Gurel in Round 7. The 19-year-old Indian Grandmaster had previously lost to Abhimanyu Mishra and Nikolas Theodorou. The match against Gurel was marked by intense competition, with both players navigating a complex mid-game. Gurel made a minor error on move 27, but the game remained sharp with both players trading queens on move 29. Gukesh’s position worsened after move 40 due to a significant error. He then sacrificed a bishop for two pawns, a decision that backfired, leading to his eventual loss. Following the defeat, Gukesh was visibly distraught, holding his head in his hands. He later extended his hand to Gurel to concede the game, marking his third consecutive loss in the tournament. Gurel expressed his satisfaction, describing the game as ‘crazy tough’.

Abhimanyu Mishra, a 16-year-old chess player, has made history by becoming the youngest player to defeat a current world champion in classical chess. Mishra achieved this feat in Round 5 of the FIDE Grand Swiss, stunning D Gukesh. Mishra, already a record holder for being the youngest to defeat a grandmaster, faced Gukesh in an Italian Opening. Gukesh’s risky move of advancing his g-pawn to g4 on move 12 shifted the game’s balance. Capitalizing on this, Mishra executed a bold piece sacrifice in the early middle game, placing immense pressure on Gukesh. Despite Gukesh’s resilience, the complex endgame demanded flawless play. After 61 moves, Mishra emerged victorious in a tense and high-class battle. Despite the historic win, Mishra expressed a desire to improve, demonstrating his ambition. This victory not only surprised the chess world but also solidified Mishra’s reputation as a promising young talent.

The FIDE Grand Swiss 2025 continues to deliver unexpected results. Round 5 saw upsets that have reshaped the tournament’s landscape. Top seed Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa and reigning World Champion D Gukesh both experienced defeats, altering the leaderboard of the prestigious Isle of Man event.

Praggnanandhaa, the top seed and a pre-tournament favorite, was defeated by Germany’s Matthias Bluebaum. Playing with white, Praggnanandhaa struggled to find his form, allowing Bluebaum to gain an advantage. The bigger shock came when World Champion D Gukesh lost to Abhimanyu Mishra, the world’s youngest Grandmaster. Mishra, despite his young age, capitalized on Gukesh’s errors to secure a significant victory.

India’s Arjun Erigaisi rebounded with a decisive win over Nikita Vitiugov, now playing under the Swiss flag. Erigaisi’s sharp play put him back in contention. Meanwhile, Iran’s Parham Maghsoodloo defeated Hungary’s Richard Rapport, emerging as the sole leader. Maghsoodloo played aggressively to dismantle Rapport’s strategy. As the tournament approaches its second half, the competition remains fierce, with qualification spots for the Candidates Tournament at stake. Praggnanandhaa and Gukesh will aim to regain their form, while Erigaisi and Maghsoodloo will look to build on their momentum. Round 6 promises more excitement in Isle of Man.

Chess grandmaster Kirill Shevchenko has received a three-year ban from all FIDE-rated competitions and has had his grandmaster title revoked due to a cheating scandal. Although a one-year portion of the ban is suspended, this suspension is contingent on his future conduct. The ruling signifies a serious stance against cheating within the chess community. The ban, effective from October 19, 2024, to October 18, 2026, was imposed by FIDE. The revocation of his grandmaster title is effective immediately. The FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission (EDC) initially made a decision on March 15, 2025, imposing the three-year suspension, though the title revocation came later. Shevchenko appealed the initial decision, and FIDE’s Fair Play Commission cross-appealed, leading to a re-examination of the case.
The incident occurred at the Spanish Team Championship in October 2024. A mobile phone was discovered in a private restroom with a note, raising suspicions. Tournament authorities investigated, and their inquiry led to Shevchenko, who was subsequently disqualified. Two of his opponents, GM Francisco Vallejo Pons and GM Bassem Amin, alerted the arbiters about Shevchenko’s extended absences from the board, prompting a deeper investigation. While Shevchenko admitted to hiding a phone in the restroom, he denied using it to access chess engines during games. However, FIDE’s report indicates he later admitted to using the Lichess application on the phone, contributing to the disciplinary action. This case marks a significant instance of cheating in recent chess history, given Shevchenko’s age (22) and high ranking.

Nineteen-year-old Divya Deshmukh has etched her name in chess history by clinching the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup title, becoming the first Indian woman to achieve this feat. In a dramatic all-Indian final held in Baku, she defeated the experienced Koneru Humpy with a score of 1.5-0.5 in the rapid tie-breaks. The classical games over the weekend showcased intense competition, with both players displaying exceptional preparation and composure. In the opening game, Divya, playing with white, established a dominant position, although Humpy fought back. The second game was more evenly matched, with Divya recovering from a challenging situation to secure a draw. The tie-breaks, however, proved to be Divya’s moment, with Humpy making crucial mistakes under time pressure. Despite entering the match as an underdog against Humpy, a two-time World Rapid Champion and world No. 5 in classical chess, Divya remained composed and emerged victorious. This victory marks a remarkable rise for the Nagpur native, who previously won the World Junior Championship in 2024 and contributed to India’s success at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest, where she also secured an individual gold medal. This World Cup win not only solidifies Divya’s place in history but also earns her India’s 88th Grandmaster title, making her the fourth Indian woman to hold the title.

This triumph also earns her the prestigious Grandmaster (GM) title. The match showcased Divya’s strategic brilliance, precise calculation, and deep positional understanding against one of India’s most celebrated chess icons.

In a crucial classical game, Divya, playing with the white pieces, navigated the game into a complex middlegame. She initiated a well-timed pawn break on the kingside, keeping Humpy on the defensive. After 42 moves, Divya’s decisive rook lift led to a crushing attack, forcing Humpy to resign.
At 19 years old, Divya Deshmukh triumphed over the experienced Koneru Humpy in a tiebreak at the FIDE Women’s World Cup in Batumi, Georgia, securing the championship. This victory marks a significant achievement, officially recognizing Divya as India’s fourth woman grandmaster.

The final match was a symbolic clash of generations, with teenage Divya facing Humpy, the first Indian woman to achieve the grandmaster title. Until this moment, only two other Indian women had reached the same level.

The competition was intense. Both classical games concluded in draws, with Divya having promising opportunities in the first while playing with White pieces. Despite her advantage, a late slip allowed Humpy to salvage a draw. The match then moved to rapid tiebreaks on Monday.

Divya, despite being relatively less experienced against Humpy’s vast experience and in the rapid format, secured a stunning victory. She capitalized in the second tiebreak game, outmaneuvering the experienced grandmaster and claiming the title.

Speaking on FIDE’s official broadcast, Divya remarked, “It definitely means a lot. There’s a lot more to achieve. I’m hoping this is just the start.”

This victory is a substantial success for Indian chess, beyond being a personal accomplishment. Last year, she was the World Junior Girls’ Champion. In the Chess Olympiad in Budapest last year, she contributed to India’s historic gold in the women’s team section and also secured an individual gold medal.

Divya has carved a golden path for herself, establishing a new chapter in Indian chess and surpassing notable figures like Humpy.
