  • Uttarakhand: Chandrabhaga river in spate after heavy rains, 90 families moved to safety

    RISHIKESH: Around ninety families living along the banks of Chandrabhaga were moved to safe locations after the river went into spate following heavy rains over the past few days here, officials said on Thursday.

    They were moved to safety on Wednesday night as their homes faced the threat of being inundated by the waters of Chandrabhaga any moment, the officials said.

    Dehradun District Magistrate R Rajesh Kumar On Thursday visited the flooded areas and spoke to officials.

    He asked Rishikesh SDM Apoorva Singh to identify the land and prepare a detailed plan for the relocation of the ninety families whose houses have been inundated by the rain-fed river.

    Information is being gathered to assess the extent of erosion caused to agricultural land by the rivers that are flooded on an annual basis, Kumar said.

  • Hundreds evacuated as landslide blocks river in Himachal Pradesh

    CHANDIGARH:   A major landslide occurred near Nalda village in Himachal Pradesh’s tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti on Friday, blocking the flow of Chandrabhaga River, leading to hundreds of residents from a dozen villages being evacuated and water entering some houses.

    This is for the first time a landslide has blocked flow of the river. As a precautionary measure, villages along the river are on alert and people have been evacuated from the low-lying areas. An official of Lauhaul and Spiti district said water has slowly begun flowing over the landslide debris that was blocking the river. Damages to the tune of Rs 52 lakh was reported as water entered a few houses as well as damaged land in some areas.

    The district administration carried out a helicopter survey to gauge the situation. An NDRF team has also been deployed. Sudesh Kumar Mokhta Director of Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority said the river is by and large blocked and only a small of amount of water is flowing over the debris currently resulting in the formation of a lake near the near Jasrath village 34 kilometres from the district headquarters Keylong. “No loss of life or property has been reported due to the incident so far.

    The villages have been evacuated and a helicopter has been deployed to conduct aerial survey,” he said. Sources said water has entered four houses and the residents have been shifted to safer places. Also, a few cowsheds and cattles have also been moved to safer areas as at least two villages Tarang and Jasrat have been affected by the pooling of water due to landslide blockage.

  • Himachal Pradesh: Chandrabhaga river blocked after landslide in Lahaul-Spiti; CM talks to Amit Shah

    SHIMLA: A landslide blocked the flow of the Chandrabhaga river in Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul-Spiti on Friday morning, leading to the flooding of some homes and fields in two villages, an official said.

    Residents of some villages downstream were also evacuated as a precautionary measure, State Disaster Management Director Sudesh Kumar Mokhta said.

    Four houses of Tarang and Jasrat villages were affected due to the flooded water after the blockage of the Chandrabhaga river, he said.

    Mokhta stated that the two villages were hit due to the flooded water, and four houses of Sukh Chand, Devi Chand, Ramesh Lal and Prem Lal got affected.

    The Chandrabhaga river was blocked near Jahalman village between Nalada and Jasarat in Udaipur subdivision, Udaipur resident Bir Bahadur Singh said.

    Five cowsheds, a sheep and a calf were also washed away, and a 30 bigha agricultural land got flooded, Mokhta added.

    The soil study team has reached the incident site to inspect the area, he said.

    The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has been requested to be on standby mode at Kullu, Mokhta added.

    However, later he said that Chandrabagha water flow started over the landslide blockade after some time.

    Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said in the state assembly that he spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah after the Chandrabhaga blockage triggered by landslide and Shah assured him of every possible help, he added.

    Meanwhile, a high-level team under the leadership of Tribal Development Minister Ram Lal Markanda, consisting of Chief Secretary Ram Subhag Singh and Director General of Police Sanjay Kundu, reviewed the blockage of the Chandrabhaga river at Nalada village, caused due to massive landslides, Thakur was later quoted as saying in a statement.

    The chief minister said that on receiving the information of the incident, the team was immediately sent to take stock of the situation.

    He said there was a gradual improvement in the flow of the river.
