A widespread ‘Kolhan Bandh’ called by the BJP in protest against a lathi charge on tribal protesters significantly impacted West Singhbhum district on Wednesday. The shutdown led to deserted streets…

A widespread ‘Kolhan Bandh’ called by the BJP in protest against a lathi charge on tribal protesters significantly impacted West Singhbhum district on Wednesday. The shutdown led to deserted streets and disrupted daily life, with most businesses remaining closed. BJP workers took to the roads, chanting slogans against the local administration and state government. The impact of the bandh was clearly visible in areas like Chakradharpur, Jagannathpur, and Sonua.

The protests stem from a violent clash that occurred Monday night in Chaibasa. Protesters demanding a ‘no entry’ rule on NH-220 and the Chaibasa bypass road had surrounded the residence of Transport Minister Deepak Birua. Tensions escalated at Tambo Chowk between protesters and police, forcing law enforcement to use lathi charges and tear gas to control the situation. The crowd responded with stone-pelting, injuring 11 police personnel, including an SDPО, and several protesters. Police have filed an FIR against 74 named individuals and 500 unknown persons, leading to the arrest of 15 people, including five women.

The BJP has intensified its opposition, labeling the police action an ‘inhumane act’ by the government. Conversely, the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has accused former Chief Ministers Champai Soren and Madhu Koda of instigating the public during the bandh. The JMM contends that the authority to implement ‘no entry’ on national highways rests with the Central government, not the district or state administration.

Due to the ongoing Ghatshila Assembly by-election, East Singhbhum was exempted from the 12-hour shutdown, with essential services remaining operational. Consequently, the bandh had minimal effect in that region, unlike in West Singhbhum where normal life was thoroughly disrupted.

West Singhbhum district in Jharkhand experienced a widespread shutdown on Wednesday, following a ‘Kolhan Bandh’ called by the BJP in protest against a recent lathicharge incident targeting tribal individuals. Streets in Chaibasa and surrounding areas like Chakradharpur, Jagannathpur, and Sonua remained deserted, significantly disrupting daily life. Most businesses remained closed throughout the morning, with BJP activists taking to the streets to voice their dissent against the local administration and the state government. The protest stems from a violent clash that erupted on Monday night. Protesters had surrounded the residence of Transport Minister Deepak Birua, demanding ‘no entry’ restrictions on NH-220 and the Chaibasa bypass road. Tensions escalated at Tambo Chowk, leading to a police lathicharge and tear gas deployment to control the crowd, which also resorted to stone-pelting. The confrontation resulted in injuries to 11 police personnel, including an SDPO, and several protesters. Authorities have registered an FIR against 74 named individuals and 500 unidentified persons, leading to the arrest of 15 people, including five women.

The BJP has intensified its protest, condemning the police action as ‘inhumane’ and an ‘anti-tribal’ move. Conversely, the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has accused former Chief Ministers Champai Soren and Madhu Koda of inciting the public during the bandh. The JMM argues that the authority to implement ‘no entry’ rules on national highways rests with the central government, not the state or district administration. The 12-hour bandh call did not significantly impact East Singhbhum due to the ongoing Ghatshila Assembly by-election, where essential services were exempted. However, life in West Singhbhum came to a standstill.

A widespread ‘Kolhan Bandh’ called by the BJP in protest against the lathi charge on tribals significantly impacted West Singhbhum district on Wednesday. The shutdown led to deserted streets and disrupted daily life across the region. Most businesses remained closed from morning, as BJP cadres took to the roads, protesting and raising slogans against the local administration and state government. The impact of the bandh was clearly visible in areas like Chakradharpur, Jagannathpur, and Sonua.

The protest stems from a violent clash that occurred on Monday night in Chaibasa. Villagers had surrounded the residence of Transport Minister Deepak Birua, demanding a ‘no entry’ policy on NH-220 and the Chaibasa bypass road. Tensions escalated at Tambo Chowk, forcing the police to resort to a lathi charge and use tear gas to control the situation. Protesters also engaged in stone-pelting towards the police. This violent confrontation resulted in injuries to 11 police personnel, including the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), and several agitators. The police have registered an FIR against 74 named individuals and 500 unknown persons, apprehending 15, including five women.

The BJP intensified its protest, calling for the Kolhan Bandh and strongly criticizing the government’s ‘inhumane action’ on social media and the streets. Conversely, the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) accused former Chief Ministers Champai Soren and Madhu Koda of instigating people regarding the bandh. The JMM argues that the authority to implement ‘no entry’ on national highways rests with the Central Government, not the district or state administration.

Due to the ongoing Ghatsila Assembly by-election, East Singhbhum was exempt from the 12-hour shutdown, with essential services granted concessions. Consequently, the bandh had minimal impact in that area, whereas normal life in West Singhbhum was completely paralyzed.

In a significant move to enhance access to clean drinking water in the rural areas of West Singhbhum, five newly constructed solar water towers were inaugurated on Saturday. These installations are part of the ‘Jal Hi Jeevan Hai’ (Water is Life) campaign, funded by the CSR initiative of the Gua Ore Mines management. The inauguration ceremony commenced in Gangda village and concluded in Bada Jamkundi village. This vital project has established solar-powered water towers in Gangda, Ghatkuri, Duiya, Chhota Jamkundi, and Bada Jamkundi villages. These towers are designed to provide villagers with a consistent supply of clean, safe, and reliable drinking water. The adoption of solar energy not only champions environmental protection but also offers much-needed relief to communities facing water scarcity. The event saw the presence of several dignitaries, including GM (Mines) S.P. Das and GM (E&L) Dr. T.C. Anand from SAIL management, along with Gangda Panchayat Mukhiya Raju Sandil, Manki Lagura Devgam, and Munda Ruben of Jamkundi, alongside a large number of enthusiastic villagers. The successful execution and leadership of this project, overseeing the construction of all solar water towers, were managed by DGM (CSR) Anil Kumar.

A tragic road accident near Chaibasa has claimed the life of a young man. Vijay Pan, a resident of Baihatu village, was fatally struck by a Manjila bus traveling from Ranchi to Chaibasa. The incident occurred on the Chakradharpur-Chaibasa main road (NH-75E) close to Baihatu village, leaving onlookers stunned. The immediate aftermath saw distraught family members and villagers staging a protest, blocking the highway for nearly three hours. Their demand was clear: on-the-spot compensation before the body would be moved. Police officials arrived at the scene and engaged in lengthy negotiations. Eventually, after assurances and the provision of initial compensation by the authorities, the villagers agreed to lift the blockade, restoring traffic flow late into the night. The deceased’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.

A courageous Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) head constable, Mahendra Lashkar, of the 60th Battalion has tragically lost his life in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast that occurred in…

A courageous Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) head constable, Mahendra Lashkar, of the 60th Battalion has tragically lost his life in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast that occurred in the dense Saranda forest of West Singhbhum. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, and despite all efforts, succumbed to his injuries on Friday night. Head Constable Lashkar hailed from Assam, and his sacrifice has cast a pall of grief over his battalion.

The explosion also injured two other personnel: Inspector Kaushal Kumar Mishra and ASI Ramkrishna Gagrai. Both are currently undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital in Rourkela. Reports indicate that their conditions are now stable and out of danger. ASI Ramkrishna Gagrai is notably the brother of Kharsawan MLA Dashrath Gagrai. CRPF officials have assured that the injured personnel are receiving the best possible medical care and vowed that Head Constable Lashkar’s sacrifice would not be in vain. Following the incident, security forces have intensified their search operations in the area, pursuing Maoist elements believed to be responsible.

The IED explosion took place around 4 PM on Friday as security forces were conducting a search operation in the Naxal-affected region. The blast occurred due to a pre-planted IED by Maoists. An exchange of fire was also reported in the vicinity after the explosion. This incident is part of a disturbing trend, as the Saranda region has witnessed an increase in IED blasts over the past few months. In August, two CRPF Cobra Battalion personnel were injured in a similar blast, and in March, a sub-inspector died from injuries sustained in an IED attack. In April, a Jharkhand Jaguar jawan was also martyred in an IED explosion.
