  • Masked criminals, posing as CBI sleuths, rob Bank of India branch at gunpoint in Jamshedpur

    By Express News Service

RANCHI: In a daredevil act, daylight robbery took place at Dimna Chowk Branch of Bank of India in Jamshedpur, where masked criminals posing as CBI officers asked people to deposit their mobile phones and looted the bank on gunpoint taking away nearly Rs 35 lakh along with them. The robbers entered the bank at around 11 am as common people and looted the cash in the name of the CBI raid and ran away locking others inside the bank.

People inside the bank could not understand whether it is really a raid or the bank is being looted despite the fact that the bank manager was also there. “As soon as I entered into the ban, one person standing beside me asked to submit my mobile phone. When we objected, he told us that a raid is being conducted by CBI, further saying that it will be returned back after the raid gets completed,” said an eyewitness Prasenjeet Kumar. When the number of people increased inside the bank, they asked everyone to sit down on the floor, he added.

“When objected, the masked criminals took out their guns and forced everyone to sit on the floor,” said a customer Prasenjit Kumar. They were a total of four in number, he added. Prasenjeet informed that the criminals executed the robbery in such alacrity that none of the bank officials could do anything to alert the police. The management of the branch had informed the police only after the robbers had fled thespot.

Another eyewitness said that they also threatened to open fire on them if they did not sit silently. “As we opposed, they threatened to open fire. Then we realized that something was wrong. Later, we saw them leaving with cash inside their bag. Before leaving, they locked the main gate and dropped all mobile phones there,” said another eyewitness Sonu.

Meanwhile, Police is not trying to identify the perpetrators by scanning the CCTV footage obtained from there. “Some of the masked criminals have looted the Ulidih branch of Bank of India in Jamshedpur. They took everyone’s mobile phone in their possession and locked people inside the bank from outside and ran away with nearly 35 lakh cash with them,” said Jamshedpur SSP Prabhat Kumar. CCTV footage is being scanned to identify the criminals, he added.

  • CBI grills arrested TMC leader’s accountant in cattle smuggling scam

    By PTI

BOLPUR: CBI on Wednesday morning grilled arrested Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal’s accountant at their temporary camp office here as a part of its ongoing investigation into an alleged cattle smuggling scam, a senior officer of the agency said.

A team of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sleuths grilled for two hours Mondal’s accountant Manish Kothari and two officials of the bank where the TMC leader has several bank accounts, he said.

The four-member team including a woman officer also went to Mondal’s Nichupatti residence here as a part of the probe, the official said.

The officers, who were supposed to question Mondal’s daughter Sukanya who is a primary school teacher, left the premises after around 10 minutes.

However, whether they have questioned Sukanya Mondal is not yet clear as the CBI has not given any confirmation so far. The central agency suspects that several bank accounts belonging to Mondal’s daughter were used for financial transactions in the scam, he added.

  • ‘Action at right time’: TMC reacts as CBI arrests Anubrata Mondal, raids his aides’ homes

    By PTI

BOLPUR: Senior Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal was Thursday arrested by the CBI from his residence here in connection with a cattle smuggling case, after twice skipping his scheduled appearance before the central probe agency in three days, an official said.

The CBI served a notice to Mondal under Section 41 of CrPC before arresting him for allegedly not cooperating in its probe into the scam, he said.

Earlier in the day, a CBI team comprising at least eight officers along with personnel of central forces reached the Birbhum district president’s residence around 10 am, and conducted a search operation, as part of the investigation.

Mondal was grilled in a room on the second floor of his residence for almost an hour, the official said. “We have arrested him for non-cooperation in the investigation into the cattle smuggling case. We have found Mr Mondal’s direct involvement in the scam. We will question him today and take necessary action as per law,” he told PTI.

Mondal had skipped his scheduled appearance on Monday and Wednesday, citing ill-health. The official said the CBI would also question the doctor of a Bolpur hospital who had prescribed Mondal bed rest for 14 days.

Sleuths of the probe agency are conducting raids at residences of several close associates of the TMC leader as well, the official added.

Mondal’s arrest comes close on the heels of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) apprehending now-suspended TMC leader and former Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee in a school jobs scam.

Meanwhile, the ruling TMC said the party was keeping a close watch on the situation. “The party will take an appropriate decision at the right time. But, we want to make it clear that TMC will not compromise on any instance of corruption,” MP Santanu Sen said.

Sen added that the party has “zero tolerance” on corruption and wrongdoings. The top TMC leadership will likely meet in the evening to take a call on the issue.

Opposition BJP alleged that Mondal’s arrest proves the ruling party was neck-deep in corruption, and demanded a statement from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. “It is time the CM comes out with a statement on the arrest of Mondal. We all know he was close to the top TMC leadership,” BJP national vice-president Dilip Ghosh said.

“The arrest of Chatterjee and now Mondal is an example of the much-hyped Bengal development model,” BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar said.

CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty claimed that Mondal considered himself above the law in Birbhum district and the TMC leadership “turned a blind eye to his misdeeds”.

  • ‘Fall of BJP in Bihar will make ED, CBI also visit there, leading to reduce pressure on Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh’: Bhupesh Baghel

    Express News Service

RANCHI: Taking a jibe at BJP Government’s fall in Bihar, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said that it will ultimately reduce pressure on Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh as ED and CBI will now also start visiting there.

Addressing a gathering of tribals from across the Country during the concluding ceremony of Jharkhand Janjatiya Mahotsav in Ranchi on Wednesday, Baghel said that BJP was trying to put a bouncer in Jharkhand, but Hemant Soren Government played hook shot leading to fall of their government in Bihar.

Jharkhand had organized Jharkhand Janjatiya Mahotsav to mark International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, popularly known as World Tribal Day, for the first time on August 9-10, participated by the artists from tribal-dominated states, including the north-eastern states of India. Baghel was also invited there as chief guest for the closing ceremony.

“I heard a few days back that some political crisis is being created here in Jharkhand. In terms of cricket, BJP was trying to put bouncer to topple the Hemant Soren Government, but they played a hook shot which led to the fall of their government in Bihar,” said Baghel. Now ED and CBI will also start visiting Bihar quite frequently, which will ultimately decrease the pressure on Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, he added.

Referring to the green cover in the tribal-dominated states like Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha, Baghel informed that they are not only fulfilling the oxygen requirement of the Country but also providing power requirements through large deposits of natural resources like coal and other minerals.

Baghel further added that tribal-dominated states do not only provide oxygen but also provides power to the entire Country, further saying that the Central Government is trying to snatch the rights of tribal-dominated states.

“We never disrupted its supply even in adverse situations but when it comes to our rights, whether the Central Government is able to help us,” questioned Chhattisgarh CM. He also warned the BJP not to judge tribal states like Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh as weak states.

“I just want to say that the tribal culture is one of the oldest cultures in this world, and it is our duty to conserve this primitive culture, which is capably being done by Jharkhand Government,” said Baghel. He also thanked Soren for celebrating World Tribal Day for two days and declaring a holiday on this day as done by him in Chhattisgarh.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on the other hand said that everywhere there are discussions about protecting the forests, hills and rivers, but there is no discussion about protecting the tribal community.

“Therefore, August 9 is like a resolution day for us so that the tribal community could raise their voice to make them reach to the people sitting on the top of the hierarchy,” said Soren. The tribal community has to fight many more battles for their rights, he added.

  • Cattle smuggling: Doctor advises rest to Trinamool’s Anubrata Mondal ahead of his CBI appearance

    By PTI

KOLKATA: A day after he skipped CBI appearance in connection with a cattle smuggling case citing medical check-up as reason, TMC leader Anubrata Mondal was on Tuesday advised rest “for a few days” by a doctor who examined him at his Bolpur residence.

Mondal, who is in his 60s, is scheduled to appear before CBI sleuths again on Wednesday in connection with the probe, after having skipped Monday’s session.

Dr Chandranath Adhikari, who examined Mondal, said that he advised the TMC Birbhum district president to take “rest at home for a few days”, after taking into consideration his physical and psychological condition.

“He has an infection on his fistula. Besides, he also suffers from diabetes, obesity, acute mental anxiety and depression,” Adhikari told reporters.

The TMC leader, who often made headlines for his off-the-cuff remarks on various issues, has been asked by the CBI to appear before it on several occasions in connection with its probe into the cattle scam.

In the past, too, Mondal skipped summonses citing ill health.

Earlier in the day, a CBI official said that the agency had sent officers to Mondal’s residence to “ensure that Mondal received the summons personally”.

“We have asked him to come to our Nizam Palace office in the city on Wednesday morning around 11 am,” the official told PTI.

Mondal returned to Bolpur from Kolkata on Monday night, following his medical check-up at SSKM hospital.

Doctors at the hospital had said that the TMC leader does not require admission.

He has been questioned twice thus far by the central agency, which in the recent past also conducted raids at various locations in the district in connection with the case.

His bodyguard Saigal Hossain was arrested by the probe agency in June.

“The special CBI Court has convicted the two accused persons – Lakhan Verma and Rahul Verma – under Sections 302, 201 and 34 of IPC for killing additional sessions judge Uttam Anand,” said CBI special public prosecutor Amit Jindal.
