  • Director of first ever ‘Captain America’, Albert Pyun passes away at 69

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: Filmmaker Albert Pyun, who was the helmer of several cult classics including ‘Cyborg’, ‘The Sword and the Sorcerer,’ ‘Nemesis,’ and the 1989 ‘Captain America,’ passed away on Saturday in Las Vegas, Nevada at the age of 69.

According to Variety, a US-based news outlet, a few years ago, Pyun received dual diagnoses of multiple sclerosis and dementia. His producer and wife, Cynthia Curnan, had been providing periodic updates on his health in the previous months.

Later, as the director’s health started deteriorating, she requested his admirers to send him private messages.

Confirming Pyun’s death on Facebook, Curnan wrote, “I sat with him for his last breath that sounded like he was releasing the weight of the world.”

As per a report by Variety, Pyun evolved an immersive style of dreamy lighting, post-apocalyptic dilapidation, and surreal, balletic action for a direct-to-video market, working primarily with minimal budgets.

Over time, genre film viewers built a passionate following for Pyun’s work. Throughout his four-decade filmmaking career, Pyun collaborated with action heroes such as Burt Reynolds, Christopher Lambert, Jean-Claude Van Damme, actor-rapper Snoop Dogg, Charlie Sheen, Ice-T, Lance Henriksen, Ronny Cox, Kris Kristofferson, James Coburn, Rutger Hauer and Dennis Hopper.

Born in Hawaii on May 19, 1953, Pyun was raised as a military child and lived on bases all across the globe before his family returned to the Rainbow State. Toshiro Mifune, a Japanese actor, encouraged Pyun to work as an intern on the set of Akira Kurosawa’s 1975 classic ‘Derzu Uzula’ after seeing one of Pyun’s short films.

After Mifune dropped out of the project, Takao Saito, Kurosawa’s go-to cinematographer, instructed Pyun as she worked on the making of one of the actor’s TV shows.

Pyun travelled to Los Angeles after returning to Hawaii to shoot advertisements. With the high fantasy epic ‘The Sword and the Sorcerer,’ he began his film career in 1982. With only a $4 million budget, the film’s $40 million box office triumph was an unexpected commercial success.

Pyun established a strong working connection with Cannon Pictures, which recognised his capacity to manage resourceful productions with short turnarounds. He produced more than 20 feature films throughout the 1990s, including his four-part ‘Nemesis’ series and ‘Captain America,’ which was the first full-length live-action depiction of the Marvel Comics character, in 1990.

At the turn of the century, Pyun started funding his own projects. During this phase, he produced films such as ‘Road to Hell’, ‘Bulletface’ and ‘Invasion’. The director kept receiving medical care in the latter years of his directorial career while working on his projects.

According to his wife, Pyun had been working on two unfinished movies before his death, with the intention of turning them into six-part TV series.

She wrote, “Failure had never been an option for Albert.” Pyun is survived only by his producer wife, according to a report by Variety.

  • ‘I really want children’: Actor Chris Evans is ‘laser-focused’ on finding a life partner

    By IANS

LOS ANGELES: Hollywood star Chris Evans says he is “laser-focused” on finding a life partner. The actor has reportedly been single since 2018 but is now ready to find someone to settle down with because a career in show business is “full of doubt.”

“Okay, good question. Thank you for a good question. My goodness. Laser focus – you know what? We’re gonna do this. I’m gonna give you a good answer. Maybe (I’m) laser-focused on finding a partner, you know, someone that you want to live with,” he said when speaking on ‘Shondaland’, reports aceshowbiz.com.

“I mean, look, I love what I do. It’s great. I pour all of myself into it. But…even this industry is full of pockets of doubt, hesitation and recalibration in terms of really trying to find someone that you really can pour all of yourself into,” he elaborated.

“Maybe it’s about trying to find someone that you’re looking to spend your life with.”

Chris last had a public relationship with ‘Big Mouth’ actress Jenny Slate, who is now married to writer Ben Shattuck.

When that relationship came to an end in 2018 after two years, the ‘Captain America’ star said at the time he was still in search of a wife and hoped to have children one day.

“I really want kids. Yeah, I do,” he said at the time.

“I like pretty pedestrian, domestic things. I want a wife, I want kids. I like ceremony. I want to carve pumpkins and decorate Christmas trees and s*** like that.”

  • Chris Evans refutes rumours about return, backs Anthony Mackie as Captain America

    By IANS

LOS ANGELES: Hollywood star Chris Evans who is famous for his portrayal of Steve Rodgers also known as the Cap in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has shown his support for Anthony Mackie amid speculations about his return in the fourth ‘Captain America’ movie.

The Hollywood Reporter tweeted about Julius Onah being tapped to direct ‘Captain America 4’.

In one of its tweets, the site posed a question if Evans would reprise his role as the titular superhero in the upcoming movie.

“It is unclear if Chris Evans would reprise his role as the first #CaptainAmerica (though if the question of who is entitled to carry the shield continues, all bets are off),” read the tweet, which prompted a response from Evans himself.

“Sam Wilson is Captain America,” the 41-year-old star simply wrote.

Evans made his first appearance as Steve Rogers a.k.a. Captain America in 2011’s ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’.

He continued to portray the character in two other ‘Captain America’ movies and ‘The Avengers’ films.

In ‘Avengers: Endgame’, Evans’ Steve Rogers appears to pass the torch to Sam Wilson or Falcon (Mackie) as he hands over his Captain America shield to the veteran United States Air Force Pararescueman.

However, Sam didn’t immediately embrace his new alter ego on Disney+’s series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, on which he starred alongside Sebastian Stan.

After much self-doubt due to him questioning how “a black man (can) represent a country that does not represent him,” Sam finally takes up the shield and embraces his new alter ego in the last episode of the series.

Plot details are still unknown, but Malcolm Spellman, the creator and head writer of “Winter Soldier”, has been tapped to pen the script of the upcoming film with Dalan Musson, a staff writer on the show. No start date has been revealed either.

  • First Captain America comic sells for $3.1 million at auction

    By PTI

LOS ANGELES: 1940 comic marking Marvel superhero Captain America’s first appearance has been sold at an auction today for USD 3.1 million.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the price is just short of the record of USD 3.6 million, set in 2014 for Spider-Man’s first comic appearance.

The “Captain America Comics No 1” was sold as part of Heritage Auctions’ comics and comic art events.

The comic was released in December 1940, a year before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that would push the United States into World War II, and features one of the comics medium’s most iconic covers: the hero punching Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

Comic legends Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created Captain America for Timely Comics, the predecessor to Marvel Comics.

Captain America aka Steve Rogers made his debut in Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2011 with “Captain America: The First Avenger”.

Hollywood star Chris Evans essayed the role of the superhero. He reprised the part in standalone projects “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, and “Captain America: Civil War” as well as the ensemble films “The Avengers”, “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame”.

  • ‘Captain America 4’ in the works

    By PTI
LOS ANGELES: “Captain America 4” is moving forward at Marvel Studios with “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” series writer Malcolm Spellman attached to pen the script.

Spellman, who was the head writer and creator of the Disney+ and Marvel’s series, will write the script with Dalan Musson, a staff writer on the same show, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Chris Evans played Captain America through his Steve Rogers’ character in all the three films but at the end of the “Avengers: Endgame”, he retired and handed his shield to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, whose story is mapped in the series along with Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/the Winter Soldier.

The fourth “Captain America” is likely to continue to Wilson’s story though there is no official update on the casting.

No director is attached, and Evans’ involvement/return remains unconfirmed.

Marvel was tight-lipped as usual, THR said.

“Falcon and the Winter Soldier” has earned strong critical and fan reaction.
