BJP spokesperson Arun Singh unleashed a blistering attack on the UPA government’s handling of MGNREGA, declaring it had morphed into ‘the synonym of corruption’ during their 10-year tenure. In an exclusive interview with a leading Hindi news channel, Singh dissected the scheme’s failures with surgical precision, backed by official audits and whistleblower accounts.

Launched with much fanfare in 2005, MGNREGA aimed to combat rural distress by assuring employment. Yet, under UPA, it allegedly became a playground for fraudsters. Singh pointed to scandals in states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where muster rolls were manipulated, and payments were diverted to fictitious entities. ‘Billions vanished into thin air while villagers waited for their wages,’ he said, referencing a 2013 CAG audit that flagged over Rs 50,000 crore in potential misuse.

Drawing sharp comparisons, Singh praised the NDA’s overhaul: geo-tagging of assets, real-time wage payments via DBT, and stringent audits. ‘Corruption thrived in opacity; we’ve brought sunlight with technology,’ he noted. The remarks have sparked a fresh war of words, with Congress defending the scheme’s conceptual success while acknowledging implementation glitches.

Economists weigh in too, noting how UPA-era leakages undermined the scheme’s poverty alleviation goals. Recent government figures indicate over 90% fund utilization with minimal complaints now. Singh’s narrative positions BJP as the reformer, challenging opponents to a debate on welfare delivery.

With elections looming, this controversy highlights the polarized views on one of India’s largest social security nets. Arun Singh’s words may fuel BJP’s campaign, reminding voters of past excesses while showcasing current achievements.

During the second day of the monsoon session in the Jharkhand Assembly, Finance Minister Radhakrishna Kishore presented the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report. The report highlighted outstanding dues in the state’s revenue collection, a matter of concern for the government. The report revealed that as of March 31, 2024, outstanding revenue collection totaled ₹84.72 crore, with ₹38.91 crore overdue for more than five years. Within the Excise and Prohibition Department, ₹7.72 crore of the total outstanding amount was held up in courts and other appellate authorities. Revenue receipts during the fiscal year 2023-24 increased by 9.57% compared to the previous year but were 10.58% lower than the budget estimates. Revenue expenditure rose by 14.99%, yet it was ₹7,999.58 crore less than the budget estimates. A revenue surplus of ₹11,252.08 crore was recorded during this period. The state received ₹165.63 crore as Goods and Services Tax (GST) compensation during the fiscal year 2023-24. Amidst the presentation of the supplementary budget by the state government, the House witnessed an uproar. BJP MLAs Satyendra Nath Tiwari and Raj Sinha proposed a cut motion. Raj Sinha demanded a cut of ₹10, which the Speaker of the Assembly disallowed. Consequently, Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato adjourned the proceedings until 2 PM due to the opposition’s uproar. Earlier on Monday, the proceedings of the Jharkhand Assembly resumed at 12:30 PM. Upon resumption, opposition members again entered the well of the House and began protesting regarding the encounter of Surya Hansda. Members of the ruling party also joined in.

The political climate in Bihar is heating up due to the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voters. The situation has sparked a war of words between the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) and the NDA in the state. MP Upendra Kushwaha launched a strong attack on the Mahagathbandhan. Union Minister Giriraj Singh targeted Rahul Gandhi. Furthermore, the Aam Aadmi Party is criticizing the Bihar government over the CAG report.

Upendra Kushwaha, the head of the Rashtriya Lok Morcha, criticized the Mahagathbandhan, stating that they are raising concerns about vote theft in the assembly, but they lack the votes themselves. He also commented on the Mahagathbandhan’s planned rallies and marches regarding the voter list, saying they have the right to do so, but it won’t make a difference as the public has decided to bring the NDA back to power.

Giriraj Singh questioned Rahul Gandhi’s victory, suggesting it was due to ‘invisible voters’. He stated that questioning the Election Commission’s integrity is wrong. He also commented on the proposed padyatra (foot march) by Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav, implying that their coordination might not last long.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) staged a protest in front of the local Enforcement Directorate (ED) office in Bihar, led by the state president, Rakesh Yadav, against the Bihar government over alleged financial discrepancies highlighted in the CAG report. The AAP alleges the NDA government is responsible for a ₹71,000 crore scam. The CAG report indicates that the Bihar government could not account for approximately ₹71,000 crore. The report stated that without the proper certificates, it can be assumed that the funds have been misappropriated.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav has criticized the current Bihar government, calling it a ‘double-engine’ government where one engine is involved in crime and the other in corruption. Speaking to the media after a meeting of the India coalition’s coordination committee, Yadav stated that important discussions were held during the meeting. He accused the government of being in a state of inertia. He announced plans for the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) to engage with the public in the coming days, including rallies. The focus will be on issues such as the rights of the people of Bihar, and irregularities in voter registration. Yadav also mentioned that Rahul Gandhi will participate in these public engagements. He highlighted the poor performance of Bihar in education, healthcare, employment, and irrigation, while pointing out its leading position in migration, poverty, and unemployment. Further, Yadav addressed the CAG report, alleging an Rs 80,000 crore scam, criticizing the government’s lack of explanation, and suggesting that large-scale corruption occurs under the BJP. The Bihar Assembly elections are scheduled for the end of this year. The term of the current Bihar Assembly ends on November 22, 2025. The Election Commission has yet to announce the official dates, but the election could be held in October or November 2025, possibly in two or three phases. The first phase of the SIR in Bihar has concluded, indicating 7.24 crore voters in Bihar. The draft will be published on August 1, 2025, and the final list will be released on September 30, 2025.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday met veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Murli Manohar Joshi at his residence in the national capital.
In a separate event, Gupta said, “If we want to make Delhi successful, to develop Delhi, then we all have to take responsibility on our shoulders that my city, my Delhi, should not become dirty or polluted because of me. If you make this small resolution today that you will not throw garbage on the road, then I promise you that you will get a Delhi where you want to live, you will not need to leave Delhi, you will not need to go to Gurgaon, NCR.”
Earlier on Friday, Gupta slammed Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for creating a ruckus over the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report, stating that “all this drama is just an excuse.” The CAG report in question has flagged a Rs 2,000 crore loss due to the AAP government’s liquor policy.”All this drama is just an excuse because they could not listen to the facts written in the CAG reports. I will not let even a single penny of the state treasury go to waste,” said the Delhi CM.
She also accused AAP of misusing Delhi’s tax revenue for election campaigns in other states. Gupta claimed that the AAP leaders are rattled by the release of Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports, which expose their misdeeds.
“They were the people who collected tax from Delhi and used it for elections in other states… We are releasing all the CAG reports one by one, so they (AAP leaders) are rattled by it. They cannot dare sit in front of us in the house and listen to their deeds,” added Rekha Gupta.
