  • Building collapses at Helang near Joshimath; Three rescued, some feared trapped

    GOPESHWAR: Three people were rescued and a few others are feared trapped under debris after a building collapsed on Tuesday at Helang near subsidence-hit Joshimath in Chamoli district, officials said.

    Additional Information Officer of the district Ravindra Negi said those rescued were rushed to a hospital while State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel were trying to safely bring out the others trapped in the building.

    Reportedly four people are feared trapped inside the building but it is yet to be confirmed by officials.

    The incident occurred in Helang village on the Badrinath highway between Pipalkoti and Joshimath late Tuesday evening.

    According to information received, the two-storey house was built near a crusher unit on the banks of the Alaknanda River.

    People working in the crusher unit were living in the building which collapsed.

    Earlier this year, several houses in Joshimath were damaged due to land subsidence and since the onset of the monsoon, the problem has aggravated.

    DEHRADUN: Torrential rains ravaged Uttarakhand on Monday, destroying buildings and causing landslides which breached the national highways to Badrinath, Kedarnath and Gangotri shrines and left three people dead and five others missing.

    A private defence training academy on the outskirts of Dehradun also collapsed amid the incessant rains.

    Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami held a meeting with senior officials to review the rain situation in the state and it was decided to suspend the Chardham yatra for two days.

    Rudraprayag district disaster management officer Nandan Singh Rajwar said a landslide hit a camp at Lincholi near Kedarnath, killing one person identified as 26-year-old Kalu Bahadur from Nepal.

    Two bodies were also recovered from rain-fed streams near Shiv Mandir and Miranagar areas in Rishikesh.

    One of them has been identified as 35-year-old Dinesh Panwar, a resident of Amit Gram.

    The other body is being identified, an official at AIIMS, Rishikesh where the bodies have been kept said.

    Heavy rains triggered the landslide whose debris fell on a resort in the area trapping four-five people under it, Senior Superintendent of Police, Pauri, Shweta Choubey told PTI over the phone.

    Rescue and relief teams have reached the spot and a search operation has been started, she said.

    Dhami, in a Facebook post, said heavy casualties have been reported due to rains in Pauri which is extremely sad.

    Swollen rivers inundated many districts with surging rainwater entering buildings and submerging vehicles.

    Located on the banks of Song river near Lalpul, the building of the Dehradun Defence Academy caved in on Monday morning, Tehri Sub Divisional Magistrate Ashish Ghildiyal said.

    No one was injured as the building had been vacated in advance, he said.

    It is a private institution whose building was constructed 15 years ago, former Zilla panchayat member Akhilesh Uniyal said.

    Most of the rivers were overflowing due to the rain with the Ganga flowing above the danger mark in Tehri, Haridwar and Rishikesh.

    Alaknanda, Mandakini and Ganga rivers were flowing above the danger level at Rudraprayag, Shrinagar and Devprayag, the disaster control room here said.

    The Badrinath National Highway is blocked at a number of places due to landslide debris.

    There is also information about one person being buried under the debris near Pipalkoti.

    In the Chamoli district, a flood-like situation has developed along the banks of a dozen rivers, including Alaknanda and its tributaries Pindar, Nandakini and Birhi.

  • New Delhi: Five workers feared trapped after a building under renovation collapses

    Five workers were reported trapped when an ‘under-construction’ building collapsed at Satya Niketan, Delhi.

    Rescue operations are stated to be underway. As many as six fire tenders have rushed to the spot.

    Efforts are on to rescue the workers trapped under the debris.

    It is understood that the building was undergoing renovation when it collapsed.

    South Delhi Mayor Mukesh Suryan was quoted by a report as saying that the owner was not in the building and only labourers were working.

    The building was too old and a warning was issued to the owner.

    Building collapses have become a frequent happening in the capital city, say reports.

    For instance, last month a four-storey building collapsed in the Kashmere Gate area of Delhi.

  • Five workers dead as slab collapses at construction site in Pune; four arrested for negligence

    PUNE: Five labourers from Bihar were killed and as many injured after the slab of an under-construction building collapsed here, police said on Friday.

    The project manager and three other employees of the contractor firm were arrested and an inquiry was instituted in the incident, officials said.

    The incident took place at Shastrinagar in Yerwada area of the Pune city late Thursday night.

    An offense was registered against the contractor firm’s staff under IPC sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 336 (rash and negligent act endangering life) on Friday evening, police said.

    “We have arrested four staff members of the contractor firm, which include the project manager, his assistant, safety supervisor and labour contractor supervisor,” said Rohidas Pawar, deputy commissioner of police.

    A net of steel bars for building a slab at the basement level collapsed on late Thursday night.

    Five labourers who were working at the time died on the spot and five others were injured, according to DCP Pawar. The injured were admitted to a hospital and were out of danger, he added.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of life in the incident. “Pained by the mishap at an under-construction building in Pune. Condolences to the bereaved families. I hope that all those injured in this mishap recover at the earliest,” he tweeted.

    Fire brigade and police personnel rescued those trapped under the debris. Pune police commissioner Amitabh Gupta and civic chief Kunal Kumar visited the site.

    “A raft foundation slab collapsed due to the absence of spacing and support. A committee has been formed under the supervision of the district collector to conduct an inquiry into the incident. The College of Engineering, Pune (COEP) has also been roped in to find faults, if any, in the construction. Based on the report, action will be taken,” Kumar said.

    Meanwhile, 24-year-old Mohammad Anjar, whose brother Tabiz Alam (22) was among those who died in the incident, said Alam had landed in Pune from Bihar’s Belon village only six months ago in search of work at construction sites.

    “For the last six months, he was working at different construction sites and only two days ago came here where the accident took place,” he told reporters.

    “We have four sisters, three of them still unmarried. After the death of my brother, the entire responsibility has come on my shoulders,” said Anjar with tears in his eyes. No safety measures had been taken at the work site, he alleged.

    Anajr also said that he got no immediate financial assistance from the administration for arranging ambulance and other things.

    The other deceased were identified as Majloom Hussain and Mohd Sameer from Balthar village, Mobid Alam from Chandi and Sohil Ahmed from Bheelwari village in Bihar.

    Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar announced ex-gratia aid of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased person. Action would be taken against those responsible for the accident, Pawar said.

  • Portion of old two-storeyed building collapses in Kolkata, 2 feared trapped under rubbles

    KOLKATA: A portion of an old two-storeyed building in the northern part of the city’s Ahiritola lane collapsed on Wednesday morning in which two persons including a child are feared trapped under the rubbles, police said.

    A huge team of disaster management, fire department, police personnel from the local police station are at the spot, an officer of Kolkata Police said.

    “So far four persons have been rescued. We are trying to rescue two others still trapped under the rubbles. There is a still a child and another person underneath,” he said.

    The portion of the building at 9 Ahiritola lane, where two families have been staying, collapsed at around 6.40 am, he said.

    “One of the two families managed to get out of the rubbles through a big gap, but another family including a child got trapped under the rubbles. Our men have pulled out four and are trying to rescue others,” he said.

    Locals rushed to the spot and informed the Jorabagan Police Station who along with personnel of the fire department and disaster management department rushed to the spot, the officer said, adding that those rescued have been taken to a nearby hospital.

    “The entire building is in a very bad shape and we have to conduct the rescue operations very cautiously otherwise there are chances of another disaster,” he added.
