  • Will Elon Musk Announce Affordable Starlink Internet Service During India Visit? |

New Delhi: Starlink, an affordable satellite-based internet service offered by Elon Musk-run aerospace company SpaceX, has transformed the way people access the web in remote and inaccessible parts of the world. Will Musk announce its arrival in India when he visits the country later this month?

After several failed attempts, Starlink is geared up to launch satellite broadband services in India, which has close to 92 crore broadband subscribers, according to the latest data by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

Bharti Airtel currently lead the broadband market, followed by Vodafone Idea and BSNL. Starlink is set to soon get a license after clearing regulatory hurdles. The government in December last year passed The Telecommunications Bill 2023 which allows spectrum allocation for satellite-based services without the need to participate in auctions. The move favours companies such as OneWeb, Musk’s Starlink and Amazon’s Kuiper. According to experts, India’s digital economy is experiencing a period of significant growth momentum.

“The potential arrival of Starlink, coinciding with Musk’s visit, could serve as a further catalyst for India’s thriving digital economy,” Prabhu Ram, Head-Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CMR, told IANS.

Increased digital access would empower citizens in ‘aspirational India’, fostering a wave of entrepreneurship, enhanced access to education and healthcare, and increased participation in the digital workforce.

All Starlink subscription plans include unlimited high-speed data on land with no long-term contracts or commitments. Starlink users can get download speeds up to 220 Mbps, with most of them receiving speeds of over 100 Mbps. • Congress government bled BSNL to ‘death almost’; we are reviving it: FM Nirmala Sitharaman

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Accusing the earlier Congress government of bleeding the state-owned BSNL to “death almost”, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday said Modi government is giving money to the company to buy 4G spectrum and become competitive.

She was responding to allegations of Shiv Sena member Arvind Sawant in Lok Sabha that the government was killing state-owned BSNL and MTNL while on the other hand it was helping private sector player Vodafone.

“BSNL is a part of our strategic asset…we are giving (the company) money to buy 4G spectrum and become competitive,” she said while intervening during a discussion on general budget.

The BSNL, she said “lost full ten years” because of the treatment meted out to it by the previous Congress government.

“There was 2G exploitation because of which BSNL lost out…you (Congress) allowed all kinds of corruption in 2G”, she added.

When the Modi government came to power in 2014, BSNL was in a bad shape and did not have money to pay salaries, she said, adding that the NDA government provided funds so that the company could come out with a Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) and clear dues of its employees.

The Modi government has given money to the company to buy 4G spectrum, she said.

Participating in the discussion on the budget, Sawant accused the government of handing over airports to the Adani group.

He also said that insurance regulator IRDAI has been headless for past several months.

The Modi government, Sawant said, was worried about the future but unconcerned about the present, especially about the people who lost their jobs during the pandemic.

Accusing the finance minister of reducing allocations for social sector schemes, Trinamool member Kalyan Banerjee said the budget does not show any ray of hope for unemployed persons, poor and marginalised sections of the society.

The budget, he said, does not provide any relief to the salaried, middle class and elderly persons.

Sushil Kumar Singh (BJP) accused the opposition of failing to see and appreciate the schemes which are aimed at providing relief to poor people.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently dedicated to the country the world’s longest Atal Tunnel Rohtang (Atal Tunnel Rohtang) built in Himachal Pradesh at an altitude of more than 10 thousand feet above sea level. Because of BSNL, users are getting 4G internet connectivity facility within this 9.02 km long tunnel. It is the world’s first tunnel where 4G internet connectivity is available. BSNL users will get 20 to 25 mbps internet speed inside this tunnel connecting Manali in Kullu district and Lahul in Lahul-Spiti district. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has installed Base Transceiver Station to provide 4G Internet connectivity at Atal Tunnel Rohtang. Three such BTS towers have been erected. With the construction of this tunnel, the distance between Manali and Leh has been reduced by 46 kilometers. Before the launch of this tunnel, Lahul Spiti had lost contact with other parts for several months. Due to this tunnel named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, now Lahul will remain in touch with other parts of the country the whole time. This tunnel is also very important from a strategic point of view, because of this, military activities will continue to run smoothly throughout the year.
