  • IPL: Brian Lara appointed new Sunrisers Hyderabad coach

    By AFP

NEW DELHI: Cricket great Brian Lara has been appointed head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad for the next Indian Premier League season, the team said Saturday.

The former West Indies captain, one of the game’s all-time greatest batsmen, joined the side late last year as batting coach and strategic adviser.

He replaces Australia’s Tom Moody, who coached the team through two disappointing seasons including last year’s finish at the bottom of the ladder.

“The cricketing legend Brian Lara will be our head coach for the upcoming #IPL seasons,” the team tweeted.

Moody had led Hyderabad through a “much cherished journey”, the team said in a tweet praising his time at the helm.

Lara, who has not commented on the announcement, bagged a number of batting records during his illustrious 26-year international career.

The 53-year old made the highest individual innings Test score with 400 not out against England in 2004.

He held the record for career Test runs until he was overtaken by India’s Sachin Tendulkar in 2008.

His 501 not out against Durham for Warwickshire in 1994 remains the highest first-class cricket score.

Sunrisers Hyderabad finished eighth in this year’s expanded 10-team IPL competition under Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson.

Debutants Gujarat Kings won the final at home in front of a record cricket crowd of nearly 105,000.

  • IPL 2022: Brian Lara, Dale Steyn part of Sunrisers Hyderabad’s revamped support staff

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Sunrisers Hyderabad on Thursday named West Indies batting legend Brian Lara and South African pace great Dale Steyn as part of their revamped support staff ahead of the 2022 IPL.

Lara, who is usually seen commentating during the IPL, has taken up the coaching role at Sunrisers. He has been named strategic advisor and batting coach.

The team made the announcement via social media.

Steyn, who has played for multiple IPL teams in the past including Sunrisers, has been appointed the pace bowling coach.

He had announced his retirement earlier this year.

Sri Lankan great Muttiah Muralitharan remains the spin bowling coach.

Moody returns as head coach after fellow Australian Trevor Bayliss quit following the 2021 season.

Moody was Sunrisers’ director of cricket last season.

Former India batter Hemang Badani has been named fielding coach while Simon Katich, who has been the head coach of RCB, has been appointed assistant coach.

Sunrisers had retained three players including skipper Kane Wiliamson, uncapped Umran Malik and Abdul Samad ahead of the mega auction in February.

The team finished last in the 2021 IPL.

  • IPL 2021: ‘Pacer Kagiso Rabada’s form is a concern for Delhi Capitals’, feels Brian Lara

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Legendary West Indian batsman Brian Lara reckons Delhi Capitals’ South African pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada could be an anxious man right now given his poor form in the IPL. Rabada, who was the tournament’s highest wicket taker last edition, has struggled to replicate the terrific form in the second leg of the ongoing season.

“Yes (his form is a concern for Delhi), he is an exceptional talent. He played a very big part in them getting to the finals, he got a lot of wickets in the middle and back end overs with slower balls and that is not been happening for him off late,” Lara said on Star Sports’ ‘Select Dugout.

A key bowler for the Delhi franchise alongside compatriot Anrich Nortje, Rabada has gone wicketless in the last four games. “So, yeah, when you got Anrich Nortje doing the business upfront, you want a world-class bowler who can do what he did in the previous tournaments, which he hasn’t. And this has caused him a little bit of anxiousness. I suppose Delhi Capital will love to see Rabada back in form,” Lara said.

The Capitals had reached their maiden finals last season, losing the summit clash to Mumbai Indians. They will take on former champions Kolkata Knight Riders for a place in this season’s final against Chennai Super Kings in the second qualifier in Sharjah on Wednesday.

  • Brian Lara wants Devdutt Padikkal to score century and bag a few Man of the Match awards this season

    By PTI
MUMBAI: Devdutt Padikkal needs to “iron out” a few technical things but the legendary Brian Lara is confident that the Royal Challengers Bangalore left-hander would better his performance during this IPL with a few Man of the Match awards.

The 20-year-old Padikkal was one of the finds of the last IPL, scoring 474 runs with five half-centuries and contributing handsomely to RCB’s campaign.

This year, he missed RCB’s opener as he was recovering from a bout of COVID-19 virus and scored 11 in his first appearance, against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

“He’s (Padikkal) such a great talent.

Last year, he got a couple of (5) fifties, he batted well, he supported Virat Kohli very well,” Lara told Star Sports’ Select Dugout Live Feed.

Lara is hopeful that Padikkal has worked on his game in the last five months and the improvements will be there for everybody to see.

For the record, he has scored more than 700 runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Karnataka.

“A few little things to iron out.

I hope he did that in the break and comes back really storming hard for this IPL,” Lara said.

“What I want to see in 2021 IPL is for him to go on and get a few man of the matches and get a couple of triple figures under his belt. Such a great little player,” Lara added.

  • Rishabh Pant has grown in last four months, he will do a good job as Delhi Capitals captain: Brian Lara

    By ANI
MUMBAI: Former West Indies skipper Brian Lara reckons wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has improved a lot in the last four months and as a result, he will do a good job as the skipper of Delhi Capitals.

Pant was given the charge of Delhi Capitals as regular skipper Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of IPL 2021 due to a shoulder injury.

“Around 6 months of international cricket for him, one against Australia and here against England. Now he is responsible for the captaincy because of injury. Plus, he doesn’t have the services of Nortje, Rabada, and Axar Patel. So, they are asking a lot of him. I think he has got a team that will support him which is most important. He has grown in the last 4 months and I think he will do a good job,” said Lara on Star Sports’ show ‘Select Dugout’.

Pant has been in remarkable form off late as he gave match-winning performances in the series against Australia and England. The left-handed batsman also scored a stunning ton against England in the fourth Test against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

In his first match as in-charge of Delhi Capitals, Pant saw a winning performance as his side defeated MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings by seven wickets here at the Wankhede Stadium.

Delhi Capitals chased down a target of 188 as Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan set the stage on fire with their stunning opening partnership.

Delhi Capitals will next take on Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.
