  • MP: Rescue ops underway for 3rd day to save girl who fell into borewell, robotic experts join efforts

    By PTI

SEHORE: Rescue agencies were still making hectic efforts for the third day to save a two-and-a-half-year-old girl who fell into a borewell in Madhya Pradesh’s Sehore district, an official said on Thursday.

A team of robotic experts also joined the operation on Thursday morning to rescue the girl, who fell into the 300-feet deep borewell in a field at Mungavali village on Tuesday afternoon, he said.

Oxygen was being supplied to the girl in the borewell through a pipe, district administration officials said.

With more than 46 hours passing away since the incident, the task to pull the girl out of the borewell has become more difficult as she has slipped further down and got stuck at a depth of nearly 100 feet, as per officials.

A three-member robotic rescue team from Gujarat reached the site on Thursday morning to join the operation, the official said.

“We have lowered a robot into the borewell to collect information and we are processing the data by scanning it to know the child’s condition. After processing the data, we will decide the next course of action on how to rescue the girl from the borewell,” the robotic team in-charge Mahesh Arya told reporters at the site.

The girl, named Srishti, fell into the borewell at around 1 pm on Tuesday and since then efforts have been on to rescue her.

She was initially stuck at a depth of about 40 feet in the borewell, but due to vibrations caused by machines engaged in the rescue operation, she slipped further down to about 100 feet, making the task more difficult, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Wednesday.

An Army team also joined the rescue operation, while teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF) have already been working to rescue the girl, officials said.

As many as 12 earth-moving and poclain machines are also currently engaged in the rescue operation, they said.

CM Chouhan and a team of officials are in touch with the district authorities to supervise the rescue operation, they said.

With the latest incident, the dangers posed by open and abandoned borewells have come to the fore again.

On Saturday, a two-year-old girl slipped into a narrow borewell in Gujarat’s Jamnagar district and got stuck at a depth of 20-feet.

She died despite hectic rescue efforts by multiple agencies for 19 hours, an official earlier said.

In 2009, the Supreme Court issued guidelines for preventing fatal accidents of children falling into abandoned borewells.

The revised guidelines issued by the court in 2010 included setting up barbed wire fencing around the well during construction, using steel plate covers fixed with bolts over the well assembly and filling up of borewells from the bottom to the ground level.

  • Efforts still on to rescue MP boy stuck in borewell; ‘no response noticed,’ say officials

    By IANS

BHOPAL: The rescue operation to save a six-year-old, who fell into a borewell in Madhya Pradesh’s Betul district and is stuck at a depth of 40-feet, has crossed 70 hours.

Rescue workers managed to dig 35 feet deep tunnel parallel to the borewell by Friday evening and are continuing efforts to rescue the child.

CCTV cameras were installed to monitor the child’s movements and oxygen is being supplied to him, however, “no response was noticed since Tuesday evening”.

The officials were yet to make any final statement of the present status of the boy.

Officials claimed that digging of tunnel was slow due to hard rock and water coming out from it.

“It’s a hard rock area that creates hurdles for digging a tunnel. In the meantime, rescuers would have to remove water coming from the tunnel. They would also have to ensure that borewell does not get any damage,” said Minister In-charge Inder Singh Parmar, who visited the spot late on Friday.

Parmar told media persons that rescue teams are working “relentlessly” to ensure the safety of the child. Rock and water imitating from the tunnel are delaying the process, he said, adding that a team of doctors was present at the spot to monitor the boy’s health.

The boy fell into the borewell on Tuesday evening, while he was playing outside his home. During the visit Parmar also met with the boy’s family and has assured them that a case would be registered against the owner of the borewell.

SURENDRANAGAR: A 12-year-old girl fell into an over 500-feet deep borewell shaft in Gujarat’s Surendranagar district on Friday morning and was rescued by Army and police teams after five hours, officials said.

The incident took place at Gajanvav village in Dhrangadhra tehsil.

This was the second such incident in the tehsil after a two-year-old boy was rescued from a borewell in June.

The girl, identified as Manisha, fell into the open shaft of a borewell on a farm around 7.30 am, an official said.

“She was rescued by Army jawans with the help of local police and health department personnel after nearly five hours of efforts,” said inspector T B Hirani of Dhrangadhra police station.

The girl was trapped at the depth of around 60 feet in the borewell which is 500 to 700 feet deep, she said.

During the rescue operation, oxygen was supplied to the girl and her condition was monitored through a camera lowered inside, Hirani added.

As soon as the girl was rescued, an Army medical team put her on oxygen and rushed her to the sub-district hospital at Dhrangadhra.

“Her SPO2 (blood oxygen level) and other vital parameters were low when she was brought out. We put her on oxygen. By the time we reached the hospital, her vitals had returned to normal. She is doing well now,” an official from the Army medical team told reporters.

Locals gathered at the spot shouted, “Jai Jawan” when the girl was rescued.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dhrangadhra) J D Purohit said the operation was successfully carried out by Army and police teams.

  • Four-year-old boy rescued from borewell in Rajasthan’s Jalore 16 hours after he fell into it

    By PTI
JODHPUR: A four-year-old boy was rescued from a nearly 90-foot-deep open borewell in a village in Rajasthan’s Jalore district on Friday, around 16 hours after he fell into it while playing, police said.

The child, identified as Anil Dewasi, had fallen into the freshly dug borewell in Lachhri village on Thursday afternoon, they said.

He was rescued around 4.30 am on Friday, police said.

“The administration had roped in a local man, Madharam Suthar from Bhinmal, who used a special loop type tool devised by him to rescue the boy,” an official said.

The official said Suthar has in the past used the technique to take out motors stuck in borewells.

The local administration and police had launched a rescue operation with the help of the teams of NDRF and SDRF.

“But when no result was achieved, some villagers suggested that Suthar, who has a special tool that can be helpful in such rescue operations, be called in,” an the official said.

Station House Office (SHO), Sanchore, Praveen Kumar Acharya said the child had stuck at a depth of about 90 feet in the borewell.

The SHO said oxygen was pumped into the borewell using a pipe to avoid the risk of suffocation and some food was also dropped inside for the child.

The teams were constantly communicating with the boy to prevent him from falling asleep, the SHO said.

According to Acharya, the borewell was dug just three days back in a farm owned by the child’s father, Nagaram Dewasi.

The borewell had a cover, but the boy removed it while playing on Thursday afternoon, the police officer said.

He then tried to take a peek but slipped and fell inside, the SHO added.

A worker saw it and raised an alarm, following which villagers informed the administration.
