  • No intention of hurting religious sentiments: Naveen Kumar Jindal

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Naveen Kumar Jindal, who was on Sunday expelled from the BJP, said his remarks were not aimed at hurting the religious sentiments of any community and claimed he was receiving death threats.

Delhi unit president Adesh Gupta expelled Jindal, who was the Delhi BJP media cell head, for allegedly expressing views on social media that vitiate communal harmony.

Jindal said he was receiving death threats on social media and urged everyone, including the media, not to disclose his address. He had come under attack on social media over his tweet referring to the Prophet Mohammad on June 1. He told PTI that he was unaware of being expelled from the BJP and was yet to receive any letter from the state president.

Jindal said he had tweeted asking a question to those attacking and insulting Hindu deities and it was not aimed at hurting the religious sentiments of any community.

Gupta in his letter said Jindal’s opinion was contradictory to the party’s original ideology. “You have worked against the party’s ideology and policies,” said the letter.

Gupta said Jindal’s primary membership of the BJP was terminated with immediate effect and he was expelled from the party.

  • BJP action against its leaders placatory, taken following threats from external powers: Cong

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Sunday termed the BJP’s action against two of its spokespersons over their remarks against Prophet Muhammad as “placatory”, saying it came under duress following “threats from external powers” and exposed the saffron party’s “muscular posturing”.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suspended its national spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled its Delhi media head Naveen Kumar Jindal on Sunday after their alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad.

Congress general secretary and chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala accused the BJP of pushing India into a dark age of religious polarisation to “subserve its parochial political agenda in the short term”.

“The placatory expulsion of two key members and spokespersons of the BJP from its primary membership, done obviously under duress of threats from external powers, exposes the much touted ‘muscular posturing’ and positioning of the BJP and the Modi government,” Surjewala said in a statement.

“Is the BJP sincere in course correcting? Is the BJP trying to atone for its immeasurable sins or is it more chameleon-like posturing?” he asked. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the Centre calling BJP spokespersons “fringe elements” is a joke.

The remarks by the BJP spokespersons drew international attention, with Qatar’s foreign ministry saying it has summoned Indian Ambassador Deepak Mittal and handed over an official note to him on what the Gulf country called “total rejection and condemnation” of the controversial remarks of a BJP leader against Prophet Muhammad.

In a press release, a spokesperson of the Indian Embassy in Qatar said the ambassador had a meeting at the Foreign Office, in which concerns were raised with regard to some offensive tweets by individuals in India, denigrating the religious personality.

“The ambassador conveyed that the tweets do not, in any manner, reflect the views of the Government of India. These are the views of fringe elements,” the spokesperson said.

Reacting to the statement, Ramesh tweeted: “BJP has suspended two spokespersons after protests by Qatar government. This is what Americans call a good cop-bad cop routine. First, get your people to be obnoxious. Then act against them under pressure, to appear moderate. MEA calling BJP spokespersons ‘fringe elements’ is a joke!”

Congress’s social media department head Rohan Gupta also tweeted: “Now Indian government calls BJP spokespersons fringe elements!” Another Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said this fire must be doused as it is now gripping NRIs too.

“The way the BJP has adopted the phrase ‘Ghar Phoonk Tamasha Dekhna’ (making a spectacle after setting the house on fire), the head of every secular citizen of the country has bowed in shame. Now even non-resident Indians are coming under the grip of this fire. This fire should be doused immediately,” the former Union minister said in a tweet in Hindi.

Amid protests by Muslim groups over the remarks, the BJP also issued a statement aimed at assuaging the concerns of the minorities and distancing itself from these members, asserting that it respects all religions and strongly denounces the insult of any religious personality.

“BJP’s statement today saying, ‘strongly against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion’ is nothing but a blatantly counterfeit pretence and sham attempt at damage control,” Surjewala tweeted.

“One thing is clear, it is a lesson to the virulent members of the BJP that they are nothing but fodders in this game of political grandstanding and that they can be used, thrown and discarded at the drop of a hat,” he said.

The Congress leader said a short statement by the BJP is unlikely to heal the millions of wounds inflicted on the ethos of Indianness.

“Will the bulldozing of India’s soul, its ethos and its all-encompassing humanity by the bulldozer of hatred finally stop? Will the mob-lynching of our constitutional ethos cease? Is repentance by the BJP and its leadership possible?” he asked.

Surjewala said the truth is that the BJP has pushed India into a dark age of religious polarisation to subserve its parochial political agenda in the short term.

As a result, Sikhs, Muslims, Christians as also SCs, STs and OBCs have had to face the wrath of lumpen elements backed by State power, he alleged, adding that this cannot be the central theme of any political party.

“The BJP and its shenanigans have repeatedly and by design insulted India’s centuries old civilisational ethos of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ by constantly pitting one community and religion against another to polarise, to divide and to spread hatred,” Surjewala said.

He said the intrinsic character of the BJP and the Modi government is now founded upon religious violence, divisive conservatism and nurturing hatred to secure vote-bank politics.

“None less than the Prime Minister and the BJP Chief Ministers, of the ilk of Adityanath, have introduced a new political vocabulary of State sponsored division of society, i.e. ‘Shamshan-Kabristan’, ’80 versus 20′, ‘bulldozer’,” he said, adding that the language of politics during elections no longer centres around phrases like development, employment, progress, education, agriculture, irrigation, electricity, trade and business and infrastructure.

“It is now entirely centred upon creating, propagating, promoting and executing a wedge between religions and communities based on what they wear, what they eat, how they live, how they celebrate their religion or even how they speak,” he said.

  • Four senior Punjab Congress leaders join BJP

    By PTI

CHANDIGARH: In a major setback to the Congress in Punjab, four of its leaders and former ministers Raj Kumar Verka, Balbir Singh Sidhu, Sunder Sham Arora and Gurpreet Singh Kangar joined the BJP here on Saturday.

Former Congress MLA from Barnala, Kewal Dhillon, and former SAD MLAs Sarup Chand Singla and Mohinder Kaur Josh also joined the BJP.

They joined the BJP in the presence of Union ministers Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Som Parkash, state unit chief Ashwani Sharma, and senior party leaders Dushyant Gautam, Tarun Chugh, Sunil Jakhar and Manjinder Singh Sirsa.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah was also in Chandigarh on Saturday for a meeting with party leaders and inaugurating the Khelo India Youth Games in Haryana’s Panchkula.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring said these leaders betrayed the party.

Balbir Sidhu, a three-time MLA from Mohali, was the health minister in the previous Congress government, while Gurpreet Kangar, a three-time MLA from Rampura Phul, was the revenue minister.

Verka, a prominent Dalit leader from the Majha region, is also a three-time legislator and was the minister for social justice and and empowerment and minorities in the previous government.

Sunder Sham Arora, a former MLA from Hoshiarpur, was the industry and commerce minister in the previous Congress government.

Balbir Sidhu’s brother Amarjit Singh Sidhu, who is the mayor of Mohali corporation, also joined the BJP.

Balbir Sidhu, Sunder Sham Arora and Gurpreet Kangar were dropped from the ministries after the Congress replaced Amarinder Singh with Charanjit Singh Channi as the chief minister last year.

The induction of four senior leaders of the Punjab Congress into the BJP is being seen as a big gain for the saffron party which is expanding its presence in the state.

Verka is a Dalit face while Kangar and Sidhu are Jat leaders and Arora is a Hindu face.

After Sunil Jakhar left the Congress and joined the saffron party, it was speculated that more leaders would quit the grand old party.

Reacting to the development, Punjab Congress chief Warring said all those leaders who deserted the party and joined the BJP had “betrayed” the Congress “like an ungrateful son deserts his mother”.

“Scared, they apparently wanted safe, secure political asylum, somewhere and the BJP provided it”, Warring said.

“They owe their current stature, that qualified them for the new political asylum to Indian National Congress, which groomed them like a mother grooms her children,” he said.

“And when it was their turn to reciprocate, they betrayed their mother for greener, nay, saffron pastures,” he alleged.

The PCC president said while the loss of any leader or a worker is felt by the party, at the same time it leads to more openings and opportunities for the loyal and fresh blood whose progress otherwise gets blocked.

Warring said, “best of luck for joining the BJP grateful that the elite who enjoyed all the privileges in the party have vacated the space for younger leadership from common background.”

He pointed out that many of the leaders who deserted the party had got all the privileges, with their sons and brothers occupying all prestigious and powerful positions at the cost of other loyal and hardworking leaders and workers.

Alleging that these leaders were gripped by some fear for reasons “not publicly unknown”, he said, “hope you all now feel safe and secure in your new saffron pastures as you were obsessively stressed and scared for the reasons best known to you and not publicly unknown, either.”

  • BJP to play big role in Punjab politics, will emerge as largest party in state in 2024 Lok Sabha polls: Amit Shah

    By PTI

CHANDIGARH: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will play a big role in the politics of Punjab and will emerge as the largest party in the state in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

He was addressing state BJP leaders, including core group members, office-bearers and district presidents.

“BJP will play a big role in the state politics…Whosoever wants to join hands with us will have to be a small partner and we will also welcome those who want to come into the BJP fold,” he said.

Shah also recalled the historic sacrifices of the people of Punjab for the protection of religion and rights of the people.

“I want to assure the people of Punjab that the Centre and the country stand with every citizen of Punjab and this crisis situation in Punjab will not be allowed to worsen,” he said.

Shah also hit out at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab and said that in just three months, its face of “deceit and deception has been exposed”.

“One shudders to think what will it (AAP) do in five years,” he said as he was apparently hitting out at the AAP government over the law and order situation.

Shah assured his party workers that the BJP will emerge as the largest political party during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls as people are “dissatisfied” with the AAP and they are waiting to root them out in the next elections.

Shah, while putting all political rumours to rest, said the BJP will contest elections on its own and whosoever wanted to join it will have to contest on its ‘lotus’ symbol.

“We are here to win and bring prosperity to the state,” he said.

Punjab BJP chief Ashwani Sharma said the party is committed to safeguarding the interest of Punjab and will not allow anyone to disturb peace.

Sharma said the BJP will contest the June 23 Sangrur Lok Sabha bypoll in alliance with the Amarinder Singh-led Punjab Lok Congress and the Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa-led Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt).

  • BJP working to undermine constitutional bodies: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav

    By PTI

LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday attacked the BJP saying the party is working to weaken the constitutional institutions, including the Election Commission.

Addressing a meeting of party candidates in 2022 UP Assembly election and other office bearers, Yadav said, “The BJP does not believe in socialism, democracy, and secularism mentioned in the Preamble of the Constitution. The BJP is working to weaken constitutional institutions.”

The meeting was held apparently to rouse SP workers’ spirits for the Azamgarh and Rampur bypoll to be held on June 23.

In a statement issued by the party, Yadav said while the SP increased its vote percentage in the 2022 assembly elections, the result of many assembly constituencies was affected because of misuse of the official machinery.

He also alleged that the Election Commission did not take proper cognisance of the party’s grievances during the latest elections.

There were too many discrepancies in the voter list, and names of voters were missing, he said.

The SP chief entrusted the responsibility of increasing the voting percentage to the party officials and told them to gear up for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and 2027 UP Legislative Assembly election.

Yadav also alleged that the villages and poor are not the priority of the BJP and it is only ruling the public by spreading hatred and tension.

  • ‘Did not earn a single penny’: Assam CM’s wife rubbishes PPE kits ‘scam’ charges

    By Express News Service

GUWAHATI:  The Opposition in Assam is demanding a probe into allegations of corruption involving CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s family.

The Raijor Dal said a firm, owned by Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, had bagged an “urgent” order for supply of 5,000 PPE kits in March 2020, when Sarma was the health minister.

Referring to a media report, the party asked why the firm was awarded the contract at Rs 990 per kit when another firm was given Rs 600 for the same.

The report said the firm, owned by Riniki, makes sanitary napkins and has no history of supplying medical equipment. As per the report, two other firms with links to Sarma were given “urgent” orders to fight the pandemic but none of them completed them.

“We demand a CBI probe, and ban on the firms,” Raijor Dal leader Vasco De Saikia said.

Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah said “people are stunned” that while they suffered, Sarma’s kin got into the business of Covid-related items to mint money.

Riniki dismissed the charges as “unfounded”, and tweeted, “I did not take a single penny out of this supply. I have always been transparent about my belief in giving back to society, irrespective of my husband’s political standing.”

  • Punjab CM Mann meets Arvind Kejriwal in Delhi

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met his party chief Arvind Kejriwal at his residence here on Thursday, as the state government faces opposition attack following the murder of singer-politician Sidhu Moose Wala.

An Aam Aadmi Party source said it was a “normal” meeting. Moose Wala was shot dead on May 29 by unidentified assailants in Punjab’s Mansa district, a day after the state government had curtailed his security cover. His cousin and a friend, who were travelling in a jeep with him, were also injured in the attack.

Mann has already announced setting up a judicial commission headed by a sitting high court judge to probe the incident.

Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, known as Sidhu Moosewala, was among the 424 people whose security was withdrawn or curtailed by the Punjab government on May 28.

The state government came under heavy criticism of opposition parties after the incident with the Congress and BJP demanding it should be dismissed.
