  • BJP’s candidate list for MP polls out; Chouhan to fight from Budhni

    The BJP on Friday released its first list of 177 candidates for the Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls, slashing tickets of 63 MLAs and fielding Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan from the Budhni seat, scotching speculation that he may change his constituency.

    Among the 177 names announced out of the total of 230 Assembly seats, 14 are women candidates, even as 63 sitting MLAs, who have been denied tickets, replaced with new faces. The party also repeated 95 MLAs who won the election during 2013.

    Chouhan would continue to file his nomination from his traditional Budhni seat.

    The party also announced candidates for 28 Assembly seats in Telangana and 24 in Mizoram.

    Trinamool Congress and CPI(M) erupted in a big way condemning Thursday’s Tinsukia killings with Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday turning her social media display picture black as a mark of solidarity with the Assam victims’ families and lambasting the BJP for injecting fear in every household of the country.

    The TMC leaders tweeted “in solidarity, on Protest day to condemn the brutal killings of Bengalis by a State ruled by the BJP we are turning out Twitter/FB DPs into black,” adding street protests would continue throughout Bengal even as an embarrassed BJP leadership wondered why the Trinamool and the Left were making an issue out of the incident as “the Assam Government has taken prompt action over the issue.”

    Calling the Thursday’s killings as an “extension of Assam Government’s NRC drive” the Bengal Chief Minister said “the people who were killed on Thursday belong to the poorest of the poor section of the society” wondering whether the killings were a direct fallout of the animosity provoked by the NRC drive in that State.

    The BJP was driving out the Biharis from Gujarat, Bengalis and UP wallahs from Assam so that it had become difficult to survive peacefully in one’s own country, Banerjee alleged saying her party would always remain by the side of the victims of such mass extraditions.

    “Under this Government (in Centre) India is in the grip of fear. Every household is in fear. There is fear of demonetisation, there is fear of murder like the one happened in Tinsukia, the fear of being ejected in the name of NRC, the fear of central Agencies,” Banerjee said.

    Attacking the BJP for creating a rift among the people of the country the Chief Minister said those who were talking about nationalism and unity of the country were actually trying to divide its citizens along the lines of religion, caste, language.

    Her nephew and party MP Abhishek Banerjee who led the Friday’s rally too demanded immediate halt in persecution of Bengalis in Assam saying “there is a clear BJP hand in the Assam killings. The fact of the matter is that the Chief Minister of that State who had led the NRC movement should immediately resign for failing to protect the lives of the innocent citizens.”

    CPI(M) which also took out an impressive rally on Friday evening said the party would continue to carry out protest movements against the BJP’s divisive politics. “Ever since the BJP has come to power either in Delhi or in Assam or anywhere the places concerned have seen killings like this. These are no ordinary political murders but they contain communal and sectarian venom which may have far reaching effect,” CPI(M) central committee member Sujan Chakrabarty said.

  • PM’s unveiling Patel’s statue will be BJP’s 2019 campaign launch

    The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is virtually kicking off its campaign for the 2019 general elections by taking out ‘Ekta Yatras’ across Gujarat in the run up to the unveiling of the 182-foot statue of Sardar Patel by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 31.

    The Prime Minister will unveil the tallest statue in the world, Statue of Unity, on the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel at Sadhu Bet, near Narmada Dam.

    The almost Rs 3,000 crore statue is being projected by the BJP as a symbol of unity and as a message that the Congress underplayed the contribution of Sardar Patel towards the country in favour of the Nehru-Gandhi family.

    As a precursor to the unveiling event, the Bharatiya Janata Party is taking out ‘Ekta Yatras’ across Gujarat from October 19 to 29. The yatras will carry a prototype of the Statue of Unity all through the length and breadth of the state.

    Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani will flag off one such Yatra from the historical Bardoli town in South Gujarat where Sardar Patel launched his Bardoli Satyagraha.

    Similarly, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel will flag off another Yatra from Karamsad, the hometown of Sardar Patel.

    Likewise, many Ministers of the government will flag off other modules of the Yatra from different regions of the state. All these modules will tour around 5,000 villages of Gujarat through the 26 Lok Sabha constituencies of the state before the big event.

    The ruling party also plans to hold get-together events at district levels during this period. The party also plans to expand its reach to the public where district-level expansion officers will be appointed full time within six months.

    “Through the Ekta Yatra, we will be reaching out to the villages and showcase the development we have carried out at the state and central level,” says state BJP President Jitu Vaghani.

    He added: “After independence, it is for the first time that the central government has announced minimum support prices (MSP) of 1.5 fold of the production cost of farm produce like paddy, maize and millet.

    “The BJP is working for the development of the farmers and farming and we are receiving overwhelming response from them,” Vaghani claimed. Even after the big event, the BJP government is gearing up for visits by state delegations to the tallest statue and the Narmada dam.

    Right now, Gujarat Ministers are inviting Chief Ministers, Deputy Chief Ministers, Governors and other dignitaries, including the President and Vice President, to the statue site. The BJP ruled state delegations are expected to visit the statue during the entire November month, one by one.

    “This is done so for the sake of convenience. We cannot accommodate and entertain them all of them at a single go. So the visits from them will be one after other,” Nitin Patel told reporters.

    BJP chief Amit Shah on Monday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ensured that triple talaq has no place in the country despite facing opposition from the Congress which “never cared” for the honour of Muslim women.

    Shah was addressing an event, where a sizeable number of Muslim women were in attendance, ahead of the November 28 Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh.

    “The Congress never cared for the honour of Muslim mothers and sisters. It has no courage to deal with issues like triple talaq. Despite stiff opposition from the Congress, (Prime Minister) Modi has ensured that it (triple talaq) has no place in the country,” Shah said.

    The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Ordinance was  promulgated on September 19 under which instant triple talaq has been declared illegal and punishable with a jail term of three years for the husband.

    Shah said the BJP has encouraged women not just by words but by giving them important responsibilities, including as defence and external affairs ministers ministers, governors and chief ministers.

    He said that the BJP had created a “record” in honouring women while the Congress had done nothing for them despite being in power for a long time.

    “Not just by words, but Modi government has given them (women) space in the Union Cabinet by inducting nine women ministers including Nirmala Sitharaman as defence minister and Sushma Swaraj as external affairs minister,” Shah said at the”kamal shakti samvad” function.

    Swaraj has been given prime responsibility of establishing good relations with countries and enhancing trade with them, Shah said.

    He added that during the BJP rule, six women were appointed as governors of states, including that of Madhya Pradesh who earlier was Gujarat’s first woman chief minister.

    He hit out at the opposition party for “disrespecting” senior BJP leader, late Vijaya Raje Scindia, affectionately known as Rajmata, claiming that she had been “oppressed” and jailed.

    He added that Scindia never gave up despite the Congress troubling her for long, and this had led to the “lotus (BJP symbol) blooming in the entire region”.

    Eulogising Scindia, the BJP chief said that the ‘Rajmata’ was like a mother to all party workers whom she constantly encouraged.

    Her life is a lesson and an inspiration, Shah told the gathering.

    Scindia was born on October 11, 1919 at Sagar in Madhya Pradesh and passed away on 25 January, 2001.

    She was a Member of Parliament for many years between 1957 and 1998.

    Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami on Monday said the AIADMK will take a call on an alliance with the BJP only after the Lok Sabha election schedules are announced.
