  • We’ll block major border areas to stop entry of illegal Bangladeshis: Rajnath Singh

    By ANI
BISWANATH: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday assured that if Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to power it will block borders to stop the entry of illegal Bangladeshis into India.

“We have our government in Tripura. With your blessing, we are going to make a government in Assam and West Bengal. The borders of these states are shared with Bangladesh. If BJP comes to power here, we’ll block major border areas to stop the entry of Bangladeshis in India,” said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh while addressing the rally in Biswanath here.

India on March 2 had reassured Bangladesh that its process to identify illegal migrants in the border state of Assam will not impact Dhaka. Also, the NRC for Assam is a record maintained by the Central Government for the people of Assam. It contains names and certain relevant information for the identification of citizens in the state. Currently, the register exists only for Assam.

Speaking further, Singh stated, “I want to congratulate the state government for building toilets in the houses, across the state. I have been told that all the districts of Assam are now open defecation free.”

Later today, Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh will reach Gohpur in Assam to address another rally. The term of the 14th Legislative Assembly of Assam is up to May 31, 2021. The Assembly elections for 126 seats will be held in three phases starting from March 27. In 2016 Assembly polls were held in two phases.

A total of 2,32,44,454 electors will elect the candidates in Assam for the 15th Legislative Assembly of Assam.

In Assam, elections shall be held in three phases. The first phase of notification is March 2 and 47 seats in 12 districts will go to the polls. The last date of nomination March 9 and the date of poll is March 27. In the second phase, 39 constituencies in 13 districts will go to the polls on April 1. A total of 41 constituencies in 12 districts will go to the polls on April 6.

In 2016, the BJP scripted history and formed the government for the first time in the state ending Congress’s 15-year rule. BJP and its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) won a combined 86 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly. BJP bagged 60 seats, AGP 14 and BPF 12 seats. Congress, which ran the state for three straight terms under the leadership of Tarun Gogoi, could manage to win only 26 seats.

  • 14 years of Nandigram violence: Ahead of Kolkata rally, Mamata says will fight against ‘anti-Bengal forces’

    By ANI
KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday said she is contesting from Nandigram to work along with members of Shaheed families against “anti-Bengal forces”, remembering the innocent villagers were killed in firing at Nandigram on March 14 in 2007.

“On this day, in 2007, innocent villagers were killed in firing at Nandigram. Many bodies could not be found. It was a dark chapter in the history of the State. Heartfelt tribute to all those who lost their lives,” she tweeted.

”In memory of those who lost their lives in Nandigram, we observe March 14 as Krishak Dibas every year and give away the Krishak Ratna awards. Farmers are our pride and our government is working for their all-round development,” she said in another tweet.

”As a mark of respect and encouraged by my brothers and sisters of Nandigram, I am contesting Bengal Elections 2021 as an AITC candidate from this historic place. It is my great honour to be here and work along with members of Shaheed families against anti-Bengal forces,” she added.

In 2007, several villagers were reportedly killed and many others sustained injuries during a protest over land acquisition for a special economic zone (SEZ) in Nandigram in East Midnapore district.

The incident had sparked a national outrage and the Calcutta High Court had suo motu ordered a CBI probe.

Banerjee, then the opposition leader, had spearheaded a movement against the Left Front government’s acquisition of arable land in Nandigram and Singur for industrialisation.

Her party reaped rich dividends from the agitations, winning 50 per cent of the panchayat seats in 2008, bagging 19 Lok Sabha seats in 2009 and ending the 34-year-long Left Front rule in the state in 2011.

Mamata Banerjee had been contesting polls from the Bhawanipore constituency. The BJP fielded former TMC leader Suvendu Adhikari from Nandigram against Mamata Banerjee, setting the stage for a high-profile contest from the seat.

Meanwhile, Trinamool on Sunday cancelled the election manifesto’s release which was scheduled for today. The next date will be announced later.

Earlier, the manifesto was scheduled to be released on March 11. However, the release of the manifesto was cancelled following an alleged attack on Mamata.

Banerjee will conduct a roadshow, days after sustaining injuries during election campaigning, on a wheelchair from Gandhi Murti to Hazra here today, Trinamool Congress (TMC) party sources said. She will address a public rally at Hazra this afternoon.

It will be her first public appearance after she was allegedly attacked by some people in Nandigram earlier this week.

On March 10, the Chief Minister, who was on a two-day visit to Nandigram from where she filed her nomination, alleged that she was pushed by a few unidentified people during her election campaigning. Later, she was brought to Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital by road from Nandigram.

Banerjee sustained “severe bone injuries” on her left foot and ankle as well as bruises and injuries on her shoulder, forearm and neck, according to the report of her initial medical examination.

The Chief Minister was discharged from the hospital on March 12.

West Bengal is likely to witness a triangular contest this time with TMC, Congress-Left alliance and the BJP in the fray.

Elections to 294-member West Bengal Assembly will be held in eight phases starting from March 27 with the final round of voting taking place on April 29. The counting of votes will take place on May 2.

  • BJP leader visits Sisir Adhikari at his residence, speculation rife over Trinamool MP’s next move

    By PTI
NANDIGRAM: BJP MP Locket Chatterjee on Saturday visited the residence of TMC’s Lok Sabha member Sisir Adhikari, who is also the father of political heavyweight and the saffron party’s Nandigram candidate Suvendu Adhikari, raising speculation that the veteran leader might switch camp ahead of the Bengal assembly polls.

Chatterjee, who had lunch at the Adhikari residence at Contai, stressed that it was “courtesy call”, and Sisir Adhikaris political move was not discussed during the meeting, even as political corridors went abuzz with murmurs that the TMC MP might join the saffron camp during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state later this month.

“It was a courtesy lunch. Sisirda is a senior politician and the Adhikari family is synonymous with Medinipur (of which Nandigram is a part). He had once praised my Lok Sabha speech. We share good rapport. He requested me to visit him again,” the BJP leader said.

She, however, clarified that the BJP would welcome the TMC MP with open arms if he decides to join the party.

Sisir Adhikari, on his part, told reporters that two of his sons are BJP members, and “Locket visiting his residence should not surprise anyone.

Why should anyone have their eyebrows raised when a leader makes a courtesy visit?” Veteran TMC leader Sougata Roy, when approached, said “Sisirda has largely remained inactive in the recent times. We will urge him not to join the ‘dal badal’ (party changing) game, given his advanced age and ailments.”

BJP spokesperson Shamik Bhattacharya claimed that all of Purba Medinipur wants the Adhikari family patriarch to join the saffron camp.

Notably, Suvendu Adhikari and his brother Soumendu, who also joined the BJP two months ago, were not at home during the BJP MP’s visit to their residence.

Their other brother, Dibyendu — also a TMC MP – was present at the lunch meet.

  • BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari declares net worth of over Rs 80 lakh

    By PTI
KOLKATA: BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, who is pitted against his mentor West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Nandigram in the coming state election, has declared net worth of over Rs 80 lakh.

As per the 50-year-old leader’s affidavit to the Election Commission his net worth is Rs 80,66,749.32.

His movable assets are worth Rs 59,31,647.32 while his bank balance is Rs 46,15,513.32, including Rs 41,823 in his election expenditure account.

His income in 2019-20 was Rs 1,115,715.00 and his cash in hand is Rs 50,000.00, as per his affidavit.

Adhikari also has National Saving Certificate (NSC) deposit of RS 5,45,000 and insurance of Rs 7,71,165.

Adhikary has immovable assets including plots of land worth Rs 46,21,102, it said.

In his affidavit the BJP leader has declared that he has criminal cases pending against him.

He also declared himself to be a post graduate from Rabindra Bharati University and a resident of Nandigram constituency.

Adhikari had filed his nomination for the high octane battle at Nandigram on Friday.

Polling in the constituency is slated for April 1.

  • BJP’s central election committee meets to finalise candidates for assembly polls

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: The BJP’s central election committee held its meeting on Saturday to finalise its remaining candidates for the Assam and West Bengal assembly polls, with top party leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, attending it.

This is the second CEC meeting over the assembly polls in four states, which also include Tamil Nadu and Kerala, besides the Union Territory of Puducherry.

The party had earlier declared the names of its candidates for the first two round of polls in Assam and Bengal scheduled on March 27 and April 1.

While Assam will have a three-phase election, polling in Bengal will be held in eight eight phases.

Three other states and Union Territories will have a single-round polls on April 6.

Other top leaders who attended the meeting at the BJP headquarters here, included Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and party president J P Nadda.

  • BJP has to win Bengal to expand ideological footprint, secure eastern borders: Dilip Ghosh

    By PTI
KOLKATA: West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh on Saturday said that the party has to fulfil its long- cherished mission of winning the state not only to expand its ideological footprint but also to secure India’s eastern borders, which have turned into a “transit point for terror elements” trying to create unrest in the country.

Amid an exodus of TMC members to the BJP ahead of the assembly elections, Ghosh conceded that the saffron party needs people from other political outfits to come to power in the state, after which it will put an end to the practice.

In an interview with PTI, Ghosh said the BJP’s ideology, its expanding organisational strength, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity are its strengths, while the lack of popular faces in the party at various levels in the state is one of the drawbacks for the saffron camp in the elections.

Allaying apprehensions of party old-timers that turncoats are becoming more important than them, he said that switching political allegiance doesn’t always guarantee leadership positions and party tickets.

“West Bengal is important for the BJP not only because of our origin in the state as Jan Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee was born here but also because the country’s security is linked with it. We have waited for long for an opportunity to come to power in the state. This is our mission and challenge,” he said.

“India’s border with Bangladesh that West Bengal shares is the most unsafe in the country. The Centre has been able to bring peace in Kashmir and other disturbed areas but the eastern borders have turned into a transit point for terror elements to infiltrate into the country to create unrest,” he said.

Exuding confidence of coming to power in West Bengal with a two-thirds majority, Ghosh said the TMC government has failed and betrayed the aspirations of the people of the state, who had voted it to power in 2011.

Elections to the 294-member assembly, poised to be a stiff contest between the BJP and the Centre, will be held in eight phases from March 27 to April 29.

The results will be declared on May 2.

The BJP has been able to “knock the door of the seat of power” due to the martyrdom of hundreds of party workers and the indomitable spirit of the activists in the state but lack of popular faces at various levels is a drawback for the party in the elections, he said.

“Our ideology, Modiji’s popularity and the indomitable spirit of our workers are our strengths but we need several popular faces at various levels to take on the TMC.

The ruling party in the state has several faces not because they are efficient but because they have been in power for 10 years,” he said.

Asked whether the rift between old-timers and newcomers will affect the BJP in the elections, he said that everyone has to abide by the party’s rules and regulations.

“The BJP is getting strengthened in West Bengal with each passing day. People from other parties including the TMC are joining us. If we don’t take them, how will we grow? “Everybody can’t get a ticket. Only some will be candidates and others will have to work as per the responsibilities assigned to them. No one is above the party,” he said.

Saffron party sources and media reports have indicated that the RSS is not happy with the BJP inducting certain leaders from other political outfits.

Ghosh said although party hopping can’t be supported, there are certain necessities in electoral politics.

“We will put an end to the practice of party hopping after we are voted to power in West Bengal. But numbers play an important role in democracy. We need to get the numbers. With leaders, their supporters too come to our party,” he said.

Since the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, when the BJP bagged 18 seats, just four less than the TMC, 26 MLAs of the ruling party in the state, two of its MPs and three legislators each from the Congress and CPI(M) and one CPI MLA have joined the saffron party.

However, barring former state cabinet ministers Suvendu Adhikari and Rajib Banerjee and Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Trivedi, none have resigned from their posts.

“Tickets are given on the basis of winnability. It is not necessary that all the elected representatives who have joined from other parties will get tickets,” he said.

Ghosh said inducting tainted TMC leaders will not impact the party’s anti-corruption narrative in West Bengal.

“People vote for the BJP because of our ideology and policies and not by looking at politicians joining us from other outfits.

“We won’t judge anyone. Law will take its own course. In their previous party, there was a culture of corruption so they worked accordingly, but in the BJP, they have to work as per our principles,” he said.

Ghosh dismissed allegations that identity politics has risen in West Bengal simultaneously with the BJP’s growth and blamed the TMC’s “appeasement politics” for the rise of communal politics in the state.

“Development for all is our election plank. But communal politics has grown in the state due to the TMC’s appeasement politics. The TMC is solely responsible for this,” he said.

Noting that it is up to the top BJP leadership whether to project a chief ministerial candidate ahead of the elections, he said, “In states where we have a strong organisation, we don’t project a CM face because we don’t need one to win the elections but in states where we have a weak presence, we have sometimes projected a CM face.

Now, we have a strong organisation in West Bengal.

” He dismissed media reports that newly inducted actor Mithun Chakraborty might be projected as the party’s chief ministerial candidate in the state.

Asked whether he will take up the challenge if the party anoints him as the CM face, Ghosh said he is a loyal soldier of the BJP and has always taken up the responsibilities bestowed upon him.

“Whatever responsibility the party bestows upon me, I will perform my duty diligently,” he said.

On the ‘outsider versus insider’ debate in West Bengal, the state BJP chief said that the TMC has raked up the issue as it has nothing else to talk about.

“The TMC, after remaining in power in the state for a decade, has nothing else to talk about, it seems. Ours is a national party, and our leaders will come here to assist us. But those fighting the elections and the ground workers are from this state. So, the TMC’s allegations are baseless,” he added.

  • Congress most corrupt party; vote for BJP to continue to avail centre and state schemes: Smriti Irani

    By PTI
MARIANI: Union Textiles Minister Smriti Zubin Irani on Saturday described Congress as the “most corrupt party” and appealed to the people to vote for the BJP to continue to avail benefits of various central and state schemes.

Addressing her maiden election campaign rally in Assam, she said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal have rolled out a number of schemes, benefitting the poor people of the state.

“There is no one more corrupt than Congress. Only BJP is the party, which works for the benefit of the poors.

“The BJP government has worked tirelessly for the people in tea gardens across the state,” said Irani, also the Minister of Women and Child Development.

Irani had defeated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in his family seat of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh in 2019 general election.

Listing out a series of schemes launched by the central and state governments, she said the Congress government never worked for the poor people and appealed to the people to vote for the BJP in the assembly polls.

Without naming former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who was a Rajya Sabha MP from Assam, Irani said “There are some tall leaders of Congress from Assam who even became PM. But, AIIMS came to Assam only during Narendra Modi’s tenure.”

She was in Mariani to campaign for BJP candidate Ramani Tanti, who is facing a direct contest with the sitting three-time heavyweight Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi.

Mariani constituency will go to polls in the first phase on March 27.

  • Faceless BJP brass in Uttarakhand hoping Brand Modi will steal show

    By Express News Service
NEW DELHI:  The BJP appears to have opted for a “faceless” leadership in Uttarakhand to contest next year’s Assembly elections in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In selecting Tirath Singh Rawat as the new chief minister, BJP has sought to silence the ambitions of factions within the state unit by sending out the message that Brand Modi will overwhelm the anti-incumbency against the state government.

On Friday, the saffron party projected a semblance of caste balance by appointing Madan Kasuhik, a Brahmin, as the state unit president. The new chief minister is a Kshatriya. Uttarakhand politics is known to have two strong electoral bases in the Brahmin and Kshatriya castes.

The BJP has seemingly taken confidence from the Bihar poll verdict where the party topped its senior alliance partner JD (U) despite an overwhelming anti-incumbency factor against the NDA government. “It was Brand Modi which pulled through in the Bihar elections despite the local leadership struggling to pull crowds and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar facing public anger in the rallies.

With no big face in the party in Bihar, the leadership in the state was also faceless, which didn’t allow room for faction fighting. The Bihar message is being sent afresh in Uttarakhand,” said a senior BJP functionary in the know.

The move to take former Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi off state politics is seen within the party as a pattern repeated in the removal of Trivendra Singh Rawat as chief minister. Tirath Singh Rawat is a rank outsider in the power game, which gives the party’s central leadership scope to experiment due to the “mass appeal of the Prime Minister”.

With the BJP amplifying the Central schemes in state elections, the saffron outfit also seems to be confident that Brand Modi can blunt the anti-incumbency factor in the party-ruled states. With Uttarakhand going to the elections in less than a year, the BJP estimates that the new CM will at best be seen as the representative of the PM in pushing for the implementation of the Central schemes and projects, besides dousing the faction fights.

CM starts with withdrawal of lockdown casesDehradun: CM Tirath Singh Rawat on Friday held his first cabinet meeting immediately after 11 ministers took oath. They decided to withdraw cases registered under Epidemic Act 1897 and Disaster Management Act, 2005.

“One of the first decisions was withdrawing cases registered during the lockdown. Other decisions include review of development authorities which came into existence after 2016,” said Om Prakash, chief secretary.

At around 5.30 pm,  11 ministers took oath. There were  four new faces — Bansidhar Bhagat, Bishan Singh Chuphal, Swami Yatishwarananda and Ganesh Joshi. Apart from CM, the state now has eight cabinet ministers and 3 ministers of state. Distribution of departments will be done soon. Of the 13 districts in the state, Pauri has three ministers. Udham Singh Nagar and Dehradun have two each. Others ministers are from Haridwar, Nainital, Tehri, Pithoragarh and Almora districts.

  • BJP appoints Madan Kaushik its Uttarakhand unit chief

    By Express News Service
NEW DELHI: The BJP on Friday appointed MLA Madan Kaushik as its Uttarakhand state president, replacing Banshidhar Bhagat who may be inducted as a minister in the government headed by Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat.

The party has also implemented tried and tested formula of Brahmin-Rajput balance by appointing a Brahmin as state president.

Kirankant Verma, a political expert from Haridwar said, “Madan Kaushik is experienced in party affairs as well as governance. The party has picked him as state president as it’s the trump card. No one could have been a better choice. He will act as a strong link between the government and the party.”

Four-time MLA from Haridwar constituency, Kaushik served as the cabinet minister in 2007-2012 BJP government with Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri and Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank.

He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in 2002 followed by successful stints in state assembly elections of years 2007, 2012 and 2017.

Traditionally, if the CM position goes to Thakur, the state president position goes to Brahmin or vice-versa.
