  • People of Bengal want ‘Vikas’ not ‘Khela’, will vote for Congress-Left alliance: Jaiveer Shergill

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: Taking a jibe at Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of assembly polls in West Bengal, Congress leader and star campaigner of Congress Jaiveer Shergill on Sunday said that ‘jhol hobe’ corruption will certainly happen whether BJP comes or TMC returns to power.

“Mamta Banerjee says ‘Khela hobe’ (Game on), while Prime Minister Narendra Modi says ‘Khela Shesh’ (the game is not over), but we say if BJP or TMC will come to power then only “Jhol Hobe”. People of Bengal want a change and therefore they will vote for the Congress-left alliance and then ‘vikas hobe’ (development will happen),” he said referring that the Congress party is fighting the election on the issue of development.

Speaking to ANI about Congress’ agenda for the campaign in West Bengal, Shergill told ANI that people of Bengal are paying a heavy price for the political violence in the state.

“BJP and TMC are doing politics; playing tug of war or engaged in mud-slinging politics. Congress’ main plan for Bengal is providing ‘Rojgar and Karobar’ (Jobs and Businesses), Congress is solely focused on bringing the wave of development, employment, and rural progress,” Shergill said.

He said that today people of West Bengal are only seeing blots being created by BJP and TMC, but the only thing which Congress wants people to see is the spot of prosperity and development.

West Bengal is likely to witness a triangular contest this time with TMC, Congress-Left alliance and the BJP in the fray. Congress is fighting the polls alliance with Left parties, and it will contest on 92 seats in the state. In the last assembly elections, Congress won 45 seats and claimed the berth of Leader of Opposition in the assembly.

However, in the recent polls for Lok Sabha, the party managed to secure only two out of 42 seats in the state while BJP won 18 seats and secured the second position in West Bengal.

Elections to 294-member West Bengal Assembly will be held in eight phases starting from March 27 with the final round of voting taking place on April 29. The counting of votes will take place on May 2.

  • CAA not election issue in Assam; people will vote logically, not emotionally: BJP

    By PTI
GUWAHATI: Assam BJP chief Ranjeet Kumar Dass on Sunday claimed that the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act is not an issue in the upcoming assembly elections in the state as people will vote logically, not emotionally.

In an interview with PTI, the senior ruling party leader said that people are convinced that not a single foreigner can illegally settle in Assam as long as the BJP is in power in the state.

“There will be no impact (of CAA) on elections and the people of Assam have earlier shown that. When the citizenship issue was at its peak, we had participated in the panchayat polls, asking people to question us if any foreigner enters Assam. We bagged the highest number of seats in that election,” he said.

The former Assembly speaker said that the CAA issue had cropped up even during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections but the BJP succeeded in increasing its tally from seven to nine seats.

“We swept the Tiwa autonomous council polls, while the Congress scored a duck. The Congress also did not win any seat in the Bodoland Territorial Region elections. The CAA will not be an issue in the assembly elections also as people will vote logically, not emotionally,” Dass said.

The two-time sitting MLA from Sarbhog constituency said that the party workers have gone to every booth and asked people whether any foreigner has come to their area after the enactment of the CAA.

“It was claimed that 1.5 crore immigrants will come to the state but not a single person has arrived yet. We had asserted that no foreigner can enter Assam as long as the BJP is in power in the state. People are convinced by our promise.”

“How can foreigners come and settle in Assam when we have such tight security arrangements?” Dass said.

The opposition Congress, however, is aggressively raising the CAA issue in its poll campaign, promising to nullify the law if the Grand Alliance led by it comes to power in the state.

The grand old party has announced that it will build a martyrs’ memorial in Guwahati for the five anti-CAA protesters who were killed in police firing in 2019.

It also launched a door-to-door campaign to collect 1 lakh ‘gamocha’ (Assamese scarf) with anti-CAA messages written on them to adorn the memorial.

Two newly floated parties Raijor Dal and Assam Jatiya Parishad, in their election campaign, are also raking up the issue of CAA, which seeks to grant citizenship to Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Jain and Parsi immigrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh who have entered India on or before December 31, 2014.

Despite the opposition’s concerted effort to build a public opinion based on CAA, Dass exuded confidence that the BJP-led NDA will win over 100 seats in the 126-member assembly.

“We are working with a 100-plus target,” he said.

The BJP is contesting the assembly elections in an alliance with Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), who are part of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), the regional arm of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The Congress, which was in power in Assam for 15 years since 2001, has formed a ‘Grand Alliance’ with AIUDF, BPF, CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML), Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM), RJD and Jimochayan (Deori) Peoples’ Party (JPP) to fight the elections against the BJP-led NDA.

Elections will be held in three phases on March 27, April 1 and April 6.

Results will be declared on May 2.

The 2016 elections in Assam gave a fractured mandate as no party got an absolute majority.

The BJP had emerged as the single-largest party with 60 MLAs, while its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) had won 14 and 12 seats respectively.

The ruling coalition also had the support of an Independent MLA.

The Congress had won 26 seats, while the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) bagged 13 constituencies.

  • BJP goes for continuity in poll-bound Assam, renominates seven MLAs

    By Express News Service
GUWAHATI:  Favouring continuity, the BJP on Sunday announced the final list of 17 candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections. Eight of the 17 seats in Guwahati and Lower Assam are currently held by the party and it fielded seven sitting MLAs.

The only MLA to have missed the poll bus is Dipak Kumar Rabha (Dudhnai seat). Shyamjit Rabha of the Rabha Joutha Mancha, a tribe-based organisation and an ally of the BJP, will contest from the seat but under the BJP’s symbol.

Industries and Commerce Minister Chandramohan Patowary (Dharmapur), Law and Justice Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharjee (Gauhati East), MLAs Ashok Singhi (Bilasipara East), Ashwini Rai Sarkar (Golakganj), Atul Bora (Dispur), Suman Haripriya (Hajo) and Narayan Deka (Barkhetry) are contesting from their respective constituencies.

The AGP, an ally of the ruling BJP-led combine, also released its third list of candidates containing 13 names, including minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury and Bhojpuri singer Kalpana Patowary, for the assembly polls in the state.

Names of three sitting MLAs also feature in the list declared by the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) general secretary Ramendra Narayan Kalita for the third and last phase of polling on April 6.

Apart from Phani Bhushan Choudhury who will contest from Bongaigaon, the other sitting MLAs are Kalita himself who will be in the fray from Guwahati West and Gunindra Nath Das from Barpeta constituency.

Patowary has been fielded from Sarukhetri seat, the AGP general secretary said.

The party has selected former minister Kamalakanta Kalita (Chaygaon), Bhupen Rai (Abhayapuri North), Javed Islam (Mankachar), Purnendu Banikya (Abhayapuri South), Jyotish Das (Goalpara East), Shaikh Shah Alam (Goalpara West), Ranjit Deka (BHabanipur), Rabiul Hussain (Chenga) and Jyoti Prasad Das (Boko).

Earlier, the AGP had released two lists containing a total of 14 names for the first and second phase of polling on March 27 and April 1 respectively.

The BJP has formed an alliance with the AGP and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) for the upcoming polls.

The party currently has 13 MLAs in the 126-member assembly.

  • Assam polls: Congress unleashes 12-point attack on ruling BJP

    By Express News Service
GUWAHTI: The Congress on Sunday came out with a 12-point ‘charge sheet’ against Assam’s BJP-led government. The party said that before coming to power, BJP had promised to protect ‘jati’ (community), ‘mati’ (land) ‘bheti’ (foundation), but instead imposed the CAA on people.

According to the Congress, the CAA is a threat to the language, culture and identity of the people of Assam.

The party slammed BJP also for leaving genuine citizens out of the National Register of Citizens.

“Before 2016 Assembly elections, the BJP promised five lakh employments every year. Like other promises, they failed to deliver this. There are around three lakh posts lying vacant in different departments and the number of unemployed in the state has reached 40 lakh,” the Congress said.

“The BJP has been selling our prized resources, from oil fields to the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport to corporate houses close to the Modi regime,” the party said.

The Congress also claimed there has been a mushrooming of syndicates and criticised the BJP for price rises and plight of tea workers.

“The BJP government has failed to increase the daily wage of tea workers. The promise to provide ST status to over 100 sub-tribes of the Adivasi tea community was also not kept,” the Congress said.

“Modi said in 2014 that after May 16, all Bangladeshis will have to leave. The BJP had also stated there were 50 lakh Bangladeshis in Assam. That this was a false statement is made apparent by figures from the home ministry,” it said.

‘Charge sheet’ a joke, retorts saffron party

The BJP called the Congress’s ‘charge sheet’ is a “joke”.

“First, their stand is not clear on the CAA. In some pockets like Barak Valley, even they support the CAA. In tea garden areas, they should not question us,” Assam BJP spokesperson Pabitra Margherita said.

  • Wave of public support in favour of BJP in Bengal, asserts Keshav Prasad Maurya

    By PTI
LUCKNOW: Asserting that the wave of public support in favour of the BJP is much stronger in West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Sunday said the party will cross the 200-seat mark in the poll-bound eastern state.

“For the past three months, I have been touring West Bengal from the election point of view and interacting with members of the public, party office bearers and workers. Based on the feedback gathered, I can say that the wave of public support is in favour of the BJP in West Bengal this time, much stronger than the one which swept Uttar Pradesh during the 2017 Assembly elections,” he told PTI.

Claiming that the days of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) are numbered, Maurya said, “Do maee, didi gayee (May 2, Didi’s government gone).” Drawing a comparison between Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, the BJP leader said people of the poll-bound state will reject the “buaa-bhatijaa” duo (of Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee) like the way UP rejected the “buaa-bhatijaa” (Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav) in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

On the support extended by non-BJP parties to the TMC, Maurya, who is campaigning for the BJP in around 35 assembly seats, said, “The sole aim of these parties is to stop the BJP from coming to power because if the BJP comes to power, their chances of staging a comeback will virtually end. Even if anti-BJP political parties extend support to ‘Didi’ (Banerjee), she will not be able to escape (from defeat), as the people (of West Bengal) have made up their minds.”

He also targeted the TMC supremo over not raising “Jai Shri Ram” slogan.

“Why does ‘Didi’ get disturbed by Jai Shri Raam slogan? It is solely because of politics of appeasement and to gather the votes of infiltrators,” the deputy CM said.

Banerjee had recently declined to speak at an event to celebrate Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary where “Jai Shri Ram” slogans were raised in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Rebutting claims that ‘Didi’ was still a craze in poll-bound West Bengal in terms of posters and banners, Maurya said, “In the 2017 UP Assembly elections, posters and banners of the Samajwadi Party were seen the most, but the BJP emerged as victorious. This time, hoardings of the Trinamool Congress are most visible because they have misused the government machinery.”

“But, I feel that elections are not won by banners and posters. People want to get rid of Trinamool Congress and ‘Didi’, and want a BJP government. They want to show their faith, which they had reposed in the prime minister,” he added.

West Bengal will be voting in eight phases, beginning March 27.

Votes will be counted on May 2.

  • MPs, defectors and actors among candidates: BJP deploys heavy artillery in south Bengal

    Express News Service
KOLKATA:  The BJP is deploying heavy artillery to wrest south Bengal from the Trinamool Congress, if one were to go by the list of candidates for 63 seats in the third and fourth phases of the eight-phase West Bengal Assembly polls.

For, it has fielded four BJP members of Parliament, four defectors and an equal number of actors, trying to whip up enthusiasm and possibly create a wave for the big fight.

The party has already made deep inroads in north Bengal during the Lok Sabha polls. While Union minister and Asansol MP Babul Supriyo will contest from Tollygunge in Kolkata, Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Dasgupta will enter the fray from Tarakeshwar.

Dasgupta’s name is already doing the rounds as a possible chief ministerial candidate.

Tarakeshwar is a popular Hindu pilgrimage site in Hooghly district and his candidature is significant in the backdrop of the BJP’s Hindutva rhetoric.

Fielding Supriyo in Tollygunge is being seen as a smart move as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while announcing her party’s candidate list, had hinted she might contest from there besides Nandigram.

Former minister in Mamata’s cabinet Rajib Banerjee has been fielded from his own constituency Domjur in Howrah and Trinamool defector Rabindranath Bhattacharya from Singur. Bhattacharya joined the BJP two days after Mamata denied him a ticket.

But angry BJP supporters in Singur reportedly locked up visiting Madhya Pradesh health minister Prabhuram Chaudhary in a party office, demanding Bhattacharya’s axing from the list.

Meanwhile, minutes after he was nominated as BJP candidate from Tarakeswar assembly seat in Hooghly district, Dasgupta said his party wants to put an end to TMCs ‘syndicate raj’ in West Bengal.

He also asked people who hail from the state but live outside to “chip in” and help the BJP build ‘Sonar Bangla’ (golden Bengal).

“We all are aware about the situation prevailing in state. This atmosphere of violence, extortion. We want to end that. The BJP will ensure that people in Bengal get to live in peace,” he said.

Senior saffron party leaders including Amit Shah and J P Nadda have often hit out at the Mamata Banerjee camp for allegedly patronising syndicates and clubs that extort money from common people.

Dasgupta also said that “work opportunities have dried up” in the state, and talented youth are moving out for jobs and higher education.

“Bengalis have been able to establish themselves all over the world. Sadly, they do not get enough scope to work here and move out. We wish to stem that flow,” he said.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote, “Honoured to be nominated by the West Bengal BJP to contest from Tarakeshwara centre of Bengals cultural heritage. I look forward to the campaign for a new, vibrant Sonar Bangla.”

  • West Bengal polls: Will attend PM Modi’s public meeting if invited, says TMC MP Sisir Adhikari

    By PTI
KOLKATA: Senior Trinamool Congress MP Sisir Adhikari, who has been in a strained relationship with the party leadership, on Sunday said that he will attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public meeting in Kanthi on March 20 if he is invited.

The MP is the father of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari who is pitted against his former mentor and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Nandigram assembly seat.

“I will attend his (Modis) meeting if invited and my sons allow me,” the Adhikari family patriarch said.

The septuagenarian leader’s two sons, Suvendu and Soumendu, joined the BJP.

His other son Dibyendu is a TMC MP.

Sisir Adhikari, whose constituency Kanthi borders the shores of the Bay of Bengal in its southern perimeter, said that he will seek from the prime minister a deep sea port for the state.

Alleging that the TMC leadership was attacking Suvendu, he said that as a father, he will do everything to protect his son.

BJP MP Locket Chatterjee on Saturday visited the residence of Sisir Adhikari and had lunch.

However, both said it was a “courtesy call”.

  • West Bengal polls: Babul Supriyo, Locket Chatterjee among BJP’s new list of candidates

    Express News Service
KOLKATA: In an attempt to create massive wave in its favour ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, the BJP announced candidate list for 63 seats, which will go to the polls in third and fourth phase, fielding four sitting MPs, four TMC turncoat MLAs, including a minister, and four actors. The BJP fielded three MPs in south Bengal seats as the saffron camp is focused to secure victory in this region after making deep inroads in north Bengal by bagging seven out of eight Lok Sabha seats.

Earlier, the BJP announced candidate list for 59 seats which go to the polls on March 27.

Among the candidates, most significant are Union minister and Asansol MP Babul Supriyo for Tollygunge constituency in Kolkata, Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Dasgupta for Tarakeshwar, Hooghly MP Locket Chatterjee for Chinsurah and Nisith Pramanik for Dinhata.

Supriyo’s candidature from Tollygunge, a place known for hosting Bengali film industry, is said to be a smart move as chief minister Mamata Banerjee, while announcing party’s candidate list, had hinted that she might contest from Tollygunge besides Nandigram.

Dasgupta’s constituency is a known as a popular Hindu pilgrimage site in Hooghly district his candidature there is significant in the backdrop of BJP’s Hindutva rhetoric.  Dasgupta is rumoured to be one of the party contenders for the chief ministerial post if the party wrests power in Bengal. Though the BJP has not yet announced any chief ministerial face, the names of Dasgupta and state president Dilip Ghosh have been doing the rounds.

Former minister in Mamata’s cabinet Rajib Banerjee has been fielded from his own constituency Domjur in Howrah and octogenarian TMC turncoat, Rabindranath Bhattacharya, who was denied ticket, from Singur. Four-time MLA Bhattacharya joined the BJP two days after Mamata announced candidate list axing him for his advanced age.

In an embarrassing situation, BJP supporters in Singur expressed their discontent over the issue of Bhattacharya’s candidature. They locked the Madhya Pradesh health minister, who came to Bengal for campaign, in a party office demanding Bhattacharya’s removal from the candidate list.

Two other TMC turncoat MLAs, Dipak Haldar and Prabir Ghoshal will contest from their own constituencies which are Diamond Harbour and Uttarpara respectively.

The saffron camp fielded four Bengali film actors, Yash Dasgupta, Anjana Basu, Payel Sarkar and Tanushree Chakrabarty. When Anjana and Payel have been fielded in South 24-Pargaans district, Tanushree will contest in a Howrah seat and Yash in Hooghly.

One of the candidates, Rantideb Sengupta, who has been fielded from Howrah Dakshin, said he would not contest for personal issues. “I want to engage myself in the party’s organisational activities, instead of contesting in elections,” he said.

  • BJP polarising Hindus by showing my face, invoking Mughals: AIUDF chief

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Asserting that unlike in 2016 there is “no Modi wave” in the Assam Assembly polls this time, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal on Sunday alleged that the BJP was attempting to polarise the Hindus by pointing at him, invoking the ‘Mughals’ and portraying the Muslims as enemies, but said the ruling party will not succeed.

Dismissing as “baseless” the BJP’s charge of communalism against his All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Ajmal claimed “no outfit was more secular” than his party in Assam, and cited the AIUDF giving substantial representation to non-Muslims in elections in the past.

In an interview with PTI, Ajmal said the Assam election would be a “turning point” for the country as the BJP’s defeat will begin from the state.

The grand alliance, of which it is a part of along with the Congress, is fighting hard for it, he said.

The BJP will be defeated in the polls in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry, and this will send a message to the entire country, he said, exuding confidence that “secular forces” will win.

The AIUDF is secular and will always remain so.

But since the BJP is itself “communal” and plays communal politics, it looks at others through that lens, Ajmal said.

“The BJP doesn’t have any development issue to talk about. They talked about jobs last time, could not provide any. At the national level, they talked about getting black money back, instead sent black money abroad,” he alleged.

The BJP has not been able to solve the farmers’ issue also, he told PTI over phone.

Asserting that almost every other day industries are shuttering in Assam, he said the AIUDF has promised that as soon as it comes to power, two paper mills that were closed down, will be revived.

“Last time (in 2016) when Narendra Modi campaigned here there was a wave. But there is no Modi wave this time. He has visited five times, but has been unable to generate any wave,” Ajmal claimed.

“By showing my face, by portraying Muslims as enemies, and making communal comments, the BJP wants to polarise Hindus, but unlike last time, they will not succeed,” he said.

On its tie-up with the Congress and forming the ‘Mahajot’ alliance, the Lok Sabha MP from Dhubri said after seeing that wherever opposition parties were coming together along with the Congress, results were good, his party decided to forge the alliance.

“I have been a part of the UPA for the last 15 years at the Centre, so it was important that we come together. Some people were not allowing it. But things fell in place. The Congress high command also gave the green signal and a grand alliance of seven parties has been formed, and we are confident of succeeding,” Ajmal said.

There is a wave against the BJP and that will benefit the grand alliance, he added.

On the recent controversy surrounding a “doctored” video of his doing the rounds on social media, Ajmal alleged that the BJP doesn’t have anything to say against his party so they are coming up with such tactics.

He said action has been taken by Twitter over those who were behind the “doctored” video.

“There is only one party in the country that talks about Hindutva and that is the BJP. If somebody is talking about Ram Mandir, it is the BJP. We are neither raising this nor making it an issue,” Ajmal said.

Asked about the key issue in Assam polls, he said the main issue is of tea garden workers and his party will strongly fight for their rights.

“The Citizenship (Amendment) Act is another big issue. We are opposing it and so is the Congress party. We were against it, are against it and will remain against it,” he asserted.

With the AIUDF expected to fight on 21 seats as part of the grand alliance headed by Congress, Ajmal said it could have contested 30-31 seats but decided to sacrifice for the sake of the alliance to prevent a division of opposition votes.

“Earlier, we lost seats between our party and the Congress. So, we thought that let us sacrifice this time but prevent a division of votes. We agreed to take fewer seats, but we expect to win 90-95 per cent of the seats we are contesting,” he said, adding that the grand alliance taking on the ruling BJP will get a majority in the Assam polls.

On BJP leader and state minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s repeated attacks on him and invoking the erstwhile Mughal rule, Ajmal said, “He (Sarma) has lost it. He had done good work under the Congress, but now after going to the BJP he is talking completely opposite of what he earlier said.”

The BJP doesn’t have anything else to say, so it is using “Badruddin Ajmal’s face, calling me a Mughal.

What do I have to do with the Mughals?” the AIUDF chief said.

“Sarma has no developmental issue to talk. So, he is attacking me thinking that by doing so they can polarise votes,” he said.

The BJP has not been able to fulfil the promises made to the people and is lying continuously, he alleged, asserting that people’s memories are not so weak that they can be duped easily.

Asked will the chief minister be from the Congress and deputy CM from the AIUDF if the alliance wins, Ajmal said this will be decided after the polls depending on how many seats are won.

Also, a common minimum programme about key issues such as the CAA, NRC and jobs, would be prepared.

The AIUDF and the Congress are contesting the forthcoming polls as a part of the ‘Grand Alliance’ along with the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), CPI(M), CPI, CPI-ML and the Anchalik Gana Morcha.

Elections to the 126-member Assam assembly will be held in three phases on March 27, April 1 and April 6.

  • BJP asks EC to make Mamata Banerjee’s treatment history public

    By ANI
KOLKATA: The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday wrote to the Chief Electoral Officer in the state, demanding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s treatment history at SSKM hospital to be made public.

“The alleged attack has been used to extract the maximum possible political mileage. The Election Commission of India in its report today has ruled out the possibility of any such attack. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and its cadre have attempted to use the Chief Minister’s purported injury which seems self-inflicted in order to gain sympathy and cause violence in different parts of the state,” reads the letter from the BJP state unit.

The letter stated that TMC’s allegation on BJP regarding the attack is a violation of the Model Code of Conduct.

“It is necessary that truth be brought out before public so that staged incidents do not repeat to deceive the masses and manipulate their voting choices,” it added.

On March 10, Banerjee had alleged that she was pushed by a few unidentified people during her election campaigning. Later, she was brought to Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital by road from Nandigram.

Banerjee sustained “severe bone injuries” on her left foot and ankle as well as bruises and injuries on her shoulder, forearm and neck, according to the report of her initial medical examination.

The Chief Minister was discharged from the hospital on March 12.

West Bengal is likely to witness a triangular contest this time with TMC, Congress-Left alliance and the BJP in the fray.

Elections to 294-member West Bengal Assembly will be held in eight phases starting from March 27 with the final round of voting taking place on April 29. The counting of votes will take place on May 2.
