“Dada is now a voter of 22/180 Raja Manindra Road, our address in Belgachia assembly constituency,” his cousin Sarmistha Sarkar said.

Asked if the decision has anything to do with Chakraborty’s next political move, if any, she said, “We have no idea. He usually puts up at hotels during official visits to the city. He visits us once in a while, but without any fanfare. Dada avoids crowd.”

  • ‘Didi will score 10 goals even with broken leg’: Trinamool MP Dev backs Mamata

    By PTI
JHARGRAM: Trinamool Congress MP Dev on Sunday claimed that the work done by the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal is unparallel, asserting that she would score 10 goals in the upcoming elections even with a broken leg.

Addressing an election rally at Silda in the Jhargram district, the Tollywood superstar hit out at the BJP over the rise in fuel prices.

“The work done by Mamata Banerjee in the last 10 years is unparallel. No other chief minister in any other state has done such great work ever. Because of the work done by her, ‘Didi’ can score 10 goals even with this broken leg,” Dev said amid chants of ‘Khela Hobey’ (game will happen) from the crowd.

“It will be a game to take people on the path of development, and people will ensure to end the game of those who play politics of religion. The people of Bengal will win the game,” he said at the rally, which saw a massive gathering to see the superstar amid sweltering heat.

The Trinamool Congress leader said that women in Bengal are more secure than those in other states, slamming the BJP for “false propaganda”.

  • Shah slams Mamata’s ‘appeasement politics’, says no curb to be imposed on festivals if BJP wins polls

    By PTI
EGRA: Asserting that the BJP does not believe in vote-bank politics, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in a jibe at the TMC over its “appeasement policies”, said on Sunday that his party, if voted to power in Bengal, will ensure no curb is imposed on Durga and Saraswati puja.

Shah, during a rally here in Purba Medinipur district, reaffirmed that the BJP will build ‘sonar Bangla’ over the next five years, propelled by the party’s double-engine government at the Centre and the state.

“Under the TMC rule, school teachers in Bengal were beaten up for organising ‘Saraswati puja’. The court had to intervene to ensure Durga puja is celebrated in the state. Do you want this government? “The BJP, after coming to power, will see to it that Durga puja and Saraswati puja are held without hindrance. No one will be stopped from organising any religious festival,” the home minister stated.

At a high school at Dhulagarh in Howrah district, Saraswati Puja could not be organised in 2017 following communal violence in the area.

The West Bengal government imposed restrictions on Durga idol immersion in 2017 on the Vijaya Dashami day and said no immersion would be allowed the next day, when Muharram would have been observed, to prevent any untoward incident.

The Calcutta High Court later cancelled the order.

He accused the Mamata Banerjee government of “encouraging infiltration” in Bengal.

Belittling Banerjee’s monthly compensation promise of Rs 500 for every underprivileged person in the general category, Shah also sought to know if TMC leaders would seek “cut-money or commission” from the beneficiaries.

“The TMC men demand their share for every 5 anna (paise). I wonder if those close to ‘bhaipo’ (CM’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee) would seek cut-money before doling out Rs 500 every month to the general-category residents,” he said.

The home minister also cautioned people against violence and aggression during the elections.

“You (people) know very well what all happened during the panchayat polls in 2018. No one was allowed to exercise franchise. Votes were replaced with bombs,” he pointed out.

Claiming that over 130 BJP functionaries have been murdered in Bengal in the recent times, he said “We will hunt down the killers from under the ground.”

Shah also said that his party, if allowed to form government in Bengal, will implement the seventh pay commission, “as we know this has been a long-standing demand of state government employees here.”

Alleging that TMC chief wants her nephew and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee to be the next chief minister”, Shah said, “Do you want that or do you wish to live in ‘Sonar Bangla’ that PM Narendra Modi has promised to build.”

In a bid to woo the women voters, he assured 33 per cent reservation for them in government services.

“Our government will give farmers Rs 10,000 every year, in addition to the funds provided by the Centre. Also, fishermen will be given Rs 6,000 each. People will get health insurance up to Rs 5 lakh under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Mamata didi could never dish out such benefits,” Shah added.

In the last 10 years, TMC’s ill-governance has started a dark chapter in Bengal’s history,” he alleged.

In the poll manifesto, the party also promised a Rs 20,000 crore Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Fund for the infrastructure development of schools, and five universities at par with IITs and IIMs.

The party said that to transform Kolkata into an international city, it will set up a Kolkata Development Fund worth Rs 22,000 crore and also ensure that the metropolis becomes a UNESCO Heritage City.

“We have decided that we will clear the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act in the first cabinet meeting itself, besides approving the Ayushman Bharat scheme for the benefit of the poor,” Shah said.

The party further promised that every refugee family will be given Rs 10,000 per year for five years through direct benefit transfer (DBT).

Shah said that his party would work towards building a safe Bengal, an “appeasement-free Bengal” and an infiltration-free state, if voted to power.

“We will bring back the Bengal that made the entire nation proud,” he said.

“You have given time to Congress, over 30 years to Communists and ten years to TMC. Give us five years to build a Sonar Bangla,” he said, urging the people to vote for the BJP.

  • Assam polls: Congress desperate, might resort to divide society, says Jitendra Singh

    By PTI
GUWAHATI: The Congress, which faces an imminent defeat in the Assam polls, has become desperate and might resort to politics to divide the society in the state but the BJP will never allow this, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said on Sunday.

Referring to the grand alliance of opposition parties, including Congress, Left parties and AIUDF, formed for the three-phase state elections, he said the Congress’ leadership has thoroughly exposed itself by turning away from its ideological position by seeking the “support offered by an overtly communal outfit headed by Badruddin Ajmal”.

The Ajmal headed All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) is considered to have a large base among Assam’s about 35 per cent Muslim population.

“The BJP is a party with a consistent ideology of justice to all sections of society without appeasement. The Congress may have become desperate enough to resort to politics of dividing the society in Assam, but we shall never allow this to happen,” Singh, the minister of state in the Prime Minister’s Office, told PTI.

In the last seven years, because of the constant outreach of Prime Minister Narendra Narendra Modi and diligent efforts of Home Minister Amit Shah, “we have succeeded in restoring peace and harmony, and we shall not allow the Congress to undo this just for vote bank politics”, said Singh, who is also the BJP’s co-incharge for Assam.

Polling will be held in 47 seats in Assam on March 27 in the first phase, while 39 and 40 constituencies will go to polls on April 1 and April 6 respectively.

Addressing a poll rally at the Mangaldoi area late on Saturday night, Singh had accused the Congress of seeking alliances out of desperation as it faces imminent defeat in the elections.

“Suddenly the Congress has decided to seek the support offered by an overtly communal outfit headed by Badruddin Ajmal,” the minister said.

He claimed that it was the same Badruddin, whom till 2016, Congress’ senior leader and the then Assam chief minister late Tarun Gogoi had vehemently opposed being associated with in spite of suggestions from certain quarters.

“So much so, when a media person once asked Gogoi about any possibility of an alliance with Badruddin Ajmal, Gogoi had retorted back angrily saying ‘Who is Badruddin?’, but unfortunately, today the same Badruddin has become the face and identity of the Congress in Assam,” Singh said.

The grand alliance comprising Congress, AIUDF, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML), Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM) and the RJD has been formed in Assam to contest the election to the 126-member assembly against the BJP-led NDA.

BJP national general secretary and MP from Mangaldoi, Dilip Saikia, while addressing the rally, said it is remarkable how Jitendra Singh, who belonged to Jammu and Kashmir, had made the North East his second home and earned the respect and love of the local people.

Singh, a Lok Sabha member from Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur, is also the minister of state for the Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).

He said, BJP will never allow Badruddin to play the politics of hatred and separatism as was done by some leaders in Kashmir and elsewhere.

  • West Bengal elections 2021: Game on as PM Narendra Modi, CM Mamata Banerjee trade blows

    Express News Service
KOLKATA:  The war of words between Narendra Modi and Mamata Banerjee is getting more intense. The PM on Saturday accused the West Bengal CM of making false promises. Mamata hit back, calling the BJP a party of extortionists which sells national property.

Referring to TMC’s recently announced election manifesto, Modi said that Mamata has released a list of promises after looting Bengal for 10 years. In the same breath, he charged that the TMC supremo has taken away 10 years from the lives of the state’s youths.

Addressing a rally in Kharagpur, the erstwhile constituency of BJP’s state president Dilip Ghosh, Modi said: “Now you are making 10 promises in your manifesto. People of Bengal trusted you and gave you 10 years, but you turned out to be a traitor.”

On a Retaliatory note, Mamata, while addressing rallies in East Midnapore district, said: “Modi has ruined the economy. It has sold the railways, BSNL and insurance agencies. Is it a political party? In BJP-ruled states, Dalit women are set ablaze. Even in the party, women workers are not safe. It is a party of the biggest of extortionists.”

Modi did not forget to mention the ‘nephew’ bit, saying that Mamata is more concerned about Abhishek Banerjee. “India is moving towards a single window system for the ease of doing business. In Bengal, there is only a single window which is the bhaipo (nephew),” he said.

Castigating Mamata for opposing the Centre’s education policy, Modi said: “The new education policy allows youth to pursue higher education in regional languages. Didi has emerged as a wall between young students and their dreams. TMC is running extortion rackets and playing a game of appeasement politics. If anyone protests in Bengal, Didi puts him in jail. After wresting power, BJP will establish rule of law in Bengal.”

Urging voters to exercise their right without fear, Modi asked police and administrative officials to follow the Constitution.
