  • Complete purge being executed so that ‘draconian bills’ passed without meaningful debate: Congress

The Congress on Tuesday alleged that a “complete purge” is being executed so that “draconian bills” are passed without any meaningful debate and the BJP MP “who facilitated entry of the two intruders” into the Lok Sabha on December 13 goes scot-free. The opposition party’s attack came soon after 49 Lok Sabha MPs were suspended from the House for disrupting proceedings on Tuesday, a day after 78 opposition members were suspended from Parliament.

In a post on X, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh underlined the suspension of Lok Sabha MPs Tuesday to allege that “a complete purge is being executed so that draconian bills are passed without any meaningful debate, and so that the BJP MP who facilitated entry of the two intruders into the Lok Sabha on December 13th goes scot-free”.

The MPs suspended on Tuesday include National Conference’s Farooq Abdullah and Congress leaders Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari. INDIA bloc MPs have been demanding a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah on the security breach in Parliament on December 13.

In an unprecedented move, 78 opposition MPs were suspended from Parliament on Monday, triggering a strong reaction from the Congress and other parties that accused the BJP government of trying to bulldoze key legislations in an “Opposition-less” Parliament.

  • Parliament Winter Session: 49 More Opposition MPs Suspended From Lok Sabha Over ‘Unruly Behaviour’ |

New Delhi: As the Opposition continues to spar with the Narendra Modi government demanding answers on the recent breach in Lok Sabha’s security, more opposition MPs from Lok Sabha were suspended for the remaining winter session of Parliament for unruly behaviour and irresponsible conduct.

Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal proposed to suspend more Opposition MPs including Supriya Sule, Manish Tewari, Shashi Tharoor, Md Faisal,  Karti Chidambaram, Sudip Bandhopadhyay, Dimple Yadav and Danish Ali. A total of 141 Opposition MPs have been suspended from both houses of Parliament for unruly behaviour.

The latest suspension comes a day after 78 opposition MPs were suspended for the remainder of the ongoing ‘Winter Session’, for raising a ruckus and disrupting proceedings in both Houses on Monday to push for their demand for a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the Parliament security breach incident.

A total of 78 MPs – 33 from Lok Sabha and 45 from Rajya Sabha – were suspended on Monday, following a ruckus over the demand by the Opposition for a statement from Union Minister Amit Shah on the Parliament security breach incident, taking the total number of lawmakers suspended for the remainder of the ongoing Winter Session to 92 on Monday.

While 34 opposition Rajya Sabha MPs, including Congress’ Jairam Ramesh, KC Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala were suspended for the remainder of the ‘Winter Session’, the ‘misconduct’ of 11 others was also referred to the Privileges Committee, which has been asked to give its report in three months.

The members will remain suspended till a report is submitted by the panel. The reason for the suspension of opposition MPs for the rest of the Winter Session was cited to be ‘misconduct’ and failure to adhere to the directions of the Chair.

Meanwhile, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance MPs staged massive protest outside the Gandhi statue in Parliament over the security breach issue

Following the suspensions on Monday, Opposition MPs lashed out at the BJP-led Centre, terming it ‘autocratic’. Kharge said, “democratic norms are being thrown into the dustbin by an autocratic Modi government by suspending 47 MPs”.

“With an Opposition-Less Parliament, the Modi government can now bulldoze important pending legislations, crush any dissent, without any debate,” the Congress national president posted on X.

He added that the Opposition’s demands include a statement from Shah on the security breach and a discussion in both Houses.

  • Annamalai hails PM Modi for using AI tools for speeches: ‘Game changer in Indian politics’ – The Economic Times Video

Chennai: Tamil Nadu BJP President hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 18 for using AI translation tools for speeches. He said this would be a game-changer in Indian politics. He said, “We all know Prime Minister is a person who is very close to technology. He has experimented artificial intelligence for a real-time translation of his voice in Hindi to Tamil. I am sure that this is going to be a game changer in the years to come. I am sure this will be a game changing moment in Indian politics, especially in southern parts of India when Prime Minister’s voice can be felt by any common person real-time.”

  • ‘Tough To Digest…’: BSP Chief Mayawati Expresses Shock Over BJP’s Win |

The opposition parties have already blamed EVM for the BJP’s victory in the assembly elections of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. Now, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati also raised a question mark on the one-sided results saying that the electoral outcomes are tough to digest.

“It is natural for all the people to be doubtful, surprised and worried when the results of the recently held assembly general elections in four states of the country were one-sided in favour of one party because considering the entire atmosphere of the elections, such a strange result is a matter of concern for the people. Very tough to digest,” said Mayawati.

    — Mayawati (@Mayawati) December 4, 2023

Mayawati said that the atmosphere during the entire election was completely different and interesting like a close fight, but the election result being completely different from it and being completely one-sided, is such a mysterious matter which requires serious thinking. “A terrible ‘mistake’ in sensing people’s pulse, a new topic of election discussion. BSP fought this election with full vigour, which brought new life in the atmosphere, but they should not be disappointed at all by such a strange result, but we should try to move forward taking inspiration from Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar,” she said.

Mayawati further added that in view of the election result and to prepare for the Lok Sabha election, an all India meeting of the party will be convened in Lucknow on 10th December to discuss the ground reports. “The Ambedkarite movement will never lose the courage to move forward without being disturbed by the election results,” she added.

The BJP has swept the assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh sending a shock-wave down the opposition parties who were expecting a close contest in the polls.

  • Opposition slams Centre after NCERT panel’s suggests replacing ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’ in textbooks

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Leaders of several opposition parties on Wednesday opposed an NCERT panel’s recommendation to replace “India” with “Bharat” in school textbooks, and alleged that the ruling BJP wanted to change history and was taking such “desperate steps” fearing its defeat at the hands of the opposition bloc INDIA.

Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said the word “India” evoked as much pride as “Bharat” but the ruling dispensation wants “to indoctrinate an entire generation into hating a word we grew up feeling a lot of pride towards.”

There has been a raging debate over the government using “Bharat” instead of “India” at various international events in the recent past after the opposition parties named their grouping as the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).

A high-level committee constituted by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to revise the social sciences curriculum has recommended that “India” should be replaced with “Bharat” in textbooks for all classes.

According to committee chairperson C I Isaac, the panel has also suggested introducing “classical history”, instead of “ancient history”, in the curriculum and including the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) in the syllabus for all subjects. NCERT Chairman Dinesh Saklani, however, said no decision has been taken yet on the panel’s recommendations.

Reacting sharply to the recommendations, Congress leader Venugopal said, “Be it Team India on the field or the Indian Space Research Organisation – the word India evokes pride just as much as Bharat. Their fear of a resounding defeat at the hands of INDIA is making them take such desperate steps.”

“These name-changers want to indoctrinate an entire generation into hating a word we grew up feeling a lot of pride towards,” he said in a post on X.

He later told reporters that the BJP is neither sincere towards “Bharat” nor towards “India.”

“Changing the name is merely a tactic by the BJP for politics of polarisation,” he said.

Venugopal claimed that they are suggesting so many things in their bid to distort India’s history through school textbooks and curriculum. “For us, India and Bharat are equal,” he asserted.

Another Congress leader, Ambika Soni, said, “In the Constitution, it is written India that is Bharat. Both names are there.”

RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha said it has been a hysterical reaction of the BJP regime ever since the INDIA bloc was formed. “Will they change the name of country to ‘Jambudweep’ or some other name if the INDIA alliance changes its name to ‘BHARAT’,” he claimed.

AAP spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar said, “It shows the fear PM Modi has of the INDIA alliance. His alliance partners are leaving him. Instead of changing name, efforts should be made to focus on issues of joblessness, inflation, and corruption.”

DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai said the BJP is restoring to name-change politics in order “to divert the attention of people from its misdeeds and maladministration.”

Congress leader and Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said the NCERT panel recommendation was “wrong” and alleged an NDA hand behind the move.

Shivakumar wondered why there is the Reserve Bank of India, Indian Administrative Services and Indian Foreign Services, hinting that the word “Bharat” was not used. “Why the Republic of India is written on Indian passport,” he asked.

Alleging that the NDA government forced the NCERT to take the “decision”, he said the move was “completely wrong” and urged the Centre not to accept the recommendation.

“You cannot change the history of India. Though you try to change Congress’ history, you cannot do it. The Congress’ history is the country’s history. So the Congress party has given the country a great history. We have ensured India’s independence. We call it Indian independence. We don’t call it Bharat independence,” he said.

Congress leader Salman Khurshid said, “Our perspective is far more profound when it comes to Bharat, whether it’s India, Bharat, or Hindustan, they (BJP) won’t understand. They only focus on their electoral gains in everything they do.”

Congress leader Jignesh Mevani the move showed disrespect towards the Constitution in which “India, that is, Bharat” is written. “So, both words can be used interchangeably,” he said. Follow The New Indian Express channel on WhatsApp

  • ‘This child is everything to us’: Bihar CM Nitish on Tejashwi

    By Express News Service

PATNA: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday created a flutter in political circles by describing his deputy and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav as ‘his child’ and is ‘everything to us’.

Giving a clear indication that he was ready to hand over his CM post to Tejashwi at any time, Nitishwhile putting his hand on Tejashwi’s shoulders said, “He is my child, he is everything to us. We are doing good work together for the state.” He had reached the Chief Secretariat on Saturday morning to offer floral tributes to the first Chief Minister of Bihar, Shri Krishna Singh.

While answering questions from journalists on his statement of friendship with the BJP, he said that his statement was misinterpreted. He had made the statement at the convocation ceremony of Mahatma Gandhi Central University in Motihari.

He added that he never spoke about the party (BJP). He clarified that he was referring to the work done in the interest of Bihar through his initiatives but the media did not cover it and instead focused on trivial issues.

Nitish’s display of affection for Tejashwi is not new. Last year, after breaking ties with the BJP in August and forming the government with the great alliance, Nitish declared Tejasvi as his successor. He has already announced that Tejashwi will lead the grand alliance in the 2025 Bihar assembly election

Nitish’s announcement has prompted senior JD (U) leader and former union minister Upendra Kushwaha to quit the party and float his own Rashtriya Lok Janata Dal (RLJD).

State Congress president Akhilesh Prasad Singh said, “There is no issue with Tejashwi Prasad Yadav holding the CM post. The grand alliance had contested the 2015 state assembly election by projecting him as the CM candidate.”

Meanwhile, former Union Minister and BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “I will answer and give an effective answer, but now who is whose child and who is whose father? It works in the state of Bihar and let it work. But I would like to say that father (Lalu) expects his son (Tejashwi) to become the Chief Minister soon, now it remains to be seen when his uncle (Nitish) leaves the chair.” Follow The New Indian Express channel on WhatsApp

  • Want both Palestinians & Israelis to live in peace and dignity, says Tharoor

    Express News Service

NEW DELHI:  With the Congress under attack from the BJP for its support to the people of Palestine, MP Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement on the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas was incomplete without acknowledging the misery of Palestinians.

Condemning Hamas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Tuesday extended India’s solidarity with Israel. “While we understand the PM standing up for Israel showing solidarity at this time of great grief and the horror that has been visited upon them, we feel that his statement was incomplete…

It’s a difficult situation for the Palestinians, especially since settlement building, and construction of new homes for Jewish settlers in the occupied territories have been continuing unabated all these years,” Tharoor said, adding that the Congress is adhering to the position taken by India traditionally over the years.

“We want both Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and dignity behind secure borders and conditions where neither has to fear for their lives at any time… We want to see this matter halt and peace be restored,” Tharoor said, adding that the entire situation was provoked by the surprise attack by Hamas during the national holiday in Israel.

“It was a terror operation. It really was impossible to accept any justification for what Hamas did. I certainly join in the condemnation of the act,” he said. The CWC resolution on Monday extending support to Palestine has been severely criticised by the BJP. Tharoor said it wasn’t a comprehensive view and the party will come out with an evolved one.
