  • Fearing horse-trading by BJP, Congress shepherds Assam candidates to picturesque resort

    Express News Service
GUWAHATI: With the day of the results drawing near, the Congress has shepherded its Assam candidates to a resort at picturesque Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati.

The basic idea is to keep the flock together and away from poachers. The March-April polls were keenly contested between the BJP-led ruling coalition and the Congress-led 10-party grand alliance of the Opposition.

The Congress is more or less convinced the ruling alliance has been rejected by the people and it is not going to get a majority.

Congress spokesperson Bobbeeta Sarma said, “It is an internal matter of the party that they (candidates) want to stay together for a few days in an environment of relaxation.”

However, the party’s three-time Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi claimed the BJP had started sending feelers to one or two candidates.

“Somebody may ask why we are doing this but one must recall how things had unfolded in Goa and Manipur where the BJP had formed the government by buying Congress MLAs. It has started sending feelers to one or two Assam Congress candidates,” he claimed.

“The BJP will try and threaten the MLAs from Opposition parties by saying that they will be implicated in some case. It will also try to lure them with money. This brand of politics has to be stopped,” Kurmi said.

He said the people of Punjab, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh had rejected the BJP and it would meet a similar fate in Assam.

“The BJP has already suffered a big jolt in the elections. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had fielded their own candidates,” the Congress MLA said, suggesting the BJP had not fielded consensus candidates.

Exuding confidence that the Opposition alliance will capture power, he said Congress would give respect to each and every candidate.

“Someone will become the CM and others will become ministers and chairmen of boards and corporations. Some others will be given responsibilities in the party,” Kurmi asserted.

He said the candidates lodged at the Dichang resort were being convinced by the Congress leaders that the grand alliance would form the government with absolute majority.

Over the next few days, the Congress candidates will take part in poetry recitation, dance and singing competitions.

“It’s good that the resort has a gym. I have a two-pack abs and I will try to make it six-pack by fully utilising my time,” Kurmi said with a grin.

  • Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee slams BJP government over COVID vaccine price disparity

    By PTI
KOLKATA: Hitting out at the BJP-led Centre over the disparity in the price of vaccines being supplied to the Union government, states and private hospitals, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said rates should be the same for every buyer.

Mocking the BJP over its slogan of ‘One nation, one party, one leader’, she stressed that every Indian needs vaccine free of cost, regardless of their age and location.

“One nation, one party, one leader shouts BJP all the time but to save lives they can’t have one price for the vaccine. Every Indian needs a free vaccine, regardless of age, caste, creed, location. GoI must fix ONE price for Covid vaccine irrespective of who pays Centre or the States,” the TMC supremo tweeted.

The Serum Institute of India on Wednesday announced that prices for its vaccine ‘Covishield’ have been fixed at Rs 400 per dose for state governments and Rs 600 per dose for private hospitals.

The Pune-based company sells Covishield to the Centre at Rs 150 a dose.

West Bengal on Wednesday registered its highest single-day spike of 10,784 new COVID-19 cases, which took the tally in the state to 6,88,956.

The death toll rose to 10,710 after 58 fresh fatalities were reported.

  • Will second wave of COVID widen rift between JDU and BJP in Bihar?

    Express News Service
PATNA: As the COVID-19 crisis deepens by the day, the differences between Bihar’s ruling party JDU and its key ally the BJP continue to increase. On Wednesday, both the parties went head-to-head over the imposition of night curfew in the State.

JDU hit back after a recent statement made by BJP state chief Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal who questioned the logic behind the imposition of the night curfew in Bihar.

The BJP leader took to Facebook to share how dismayed he was with the night curfew from 9 P.M. to 5 A.M. and asked how it would help contain the spread of the virus.

While the state is grappling with massive surges in COVID-19 cases, the parties took to hitting out at each other.

Stirring the internal politics in the state, the newly inducted party member of JDU, Upendra Kushwaha responded to the BJP chief in a tweet by saying, “Sanjay Jaiswal ji, abhi rajniti vyanbaji ka nahi hai” (Sanjay Ji, now is not the time for political rhetoric).”

Political analysts concurred that this was Kushwaha’s attempt at targeting Dr. Sanjay directly at the behest of CM Nitish Kumar, to state that the JDU cannot be pressured in their governing.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal, at an all-party meet, had suggested a 62-hour lockdown starting from every Friday evening to Monday morning to keep a check on the growing infections of Covid-19.

Unfortunately, just like the leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav’s advice, it was not given consideration and the decision of moving on with the night curfew, which the CM’s advisors had suggested, was finalised.

Following the decision, a BJP leader remarked, “Dr Jaiswal himself is a doctor and his advice merits attention,” adding that any decision must be taken after consulting with allies.

JDU senior leader Sanjay K Jha also tweeted on Wednesday defending the decision of night curfew taken by CM Nitish Kumar recently at the state crisis management department meeting.

    A crisis is brewing

Reliable sources from within the NDA said that a crisis is brewing slowly between the two parties and that their differences are rising, albeit slowly. The sources believe that this may explode at any moment once the pandemic subsides.

There are many BJP leaders and ministers, who may not admit this on the record but they are feeling overlooked during the decision-making processes in the state government led by Nitish Kumar.

In an attempt to keep a close eye on major departments headed by BJP ministers, trusted bureaucrats of the CM are appointed as principal secretaries.

On Wednesday, former deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi had demanded free vaccines for all those above 18 from the state government as was promised in the recently concluded assembly polls.

CM Nitish Kumar soon after Modi’s tweet announced free vaccines for everyone above 18 on Twitter.

  • Stray violence marks sixth phase of Bengal polls; 37.27 per cent turnout recorded till 11 am

    By PTI
KOLKATA: Stray incidents of violence were on Thursday reported from various parts of Bengal where voting is underway in the sixth phase of assembly elections, but the overall poll situation was largely peaceful with 37.27 per cent turnout recorded till 11 am, an EC official said.

Elections, which began at 7 am, are being held in 43 assembly seats — 17 in North 24 Parganas district, nine each in Nadia and Uttar Dinajpur, and eight in Purba Bardhaman.

Long queues were seen outside most of the polling booths with security personnel asking everyone to adhere to COVID-19 safety protocols, amid the surge in infections everywhere, the official said.

In Uttar Dinajpur’s Chopra area, shots were reportedly fired after clashes broke out between activists of the TMC and the BJP over allegations of heckling by agents of a polling booth.

Both the parties denied having used any firearm and blamed the opposition for the violence.

The office of the CEO has sought a report on the incident from the local administration.

In Raiganj, sources in the TMC said one of the ruling party activists sustained serious injuries after he was allegedly stabbed by BJP workers.

The saffron party, however, denied the allegations.

Sporadic violence was also reported from Bijpur constituency in North 24 Parganas, where TMC and BJP supporters clashed with each other outside polling booths.

Both the parties accused each other of trying to rig votes.

Two supporters of the TMC and three of the BJP were reportedly injured in the clashes.

A huge contingent of security forces was rushed to the troubled areas to control the situation.

In the Halisahar area of Naihati constituency, the saffron party alleged that bombs were hurled at the residence of a local BJP leader.

His mother and younger brother are known to have suffered injuries.

The TMC and the BJP traded charges against each other.

Film director-turned-TMC candidate Raj Chakraborty was gheraoed in Barrackpore constituency by BJP supporters, who accused him of influencing voters.

    Chakraborty denied the allegations.

In Amdanga constituency, country-made crude bombs were recovered by police personnel.

Over 1.03 crore voters are set to decide the political fate of 306 candidates in this phase.

As many as 1,071 companies of central forces have been deployed to ensure free and fair polling, officials said.

The voting exercise is underway in 14,480 polling stations of the 43 assembly segments.

  • ‘Not less than demonetisation’: Rahul Gandhi slams Centre over vaccine strategy

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday hit out at the Central government over its vaccine strategy.

“Central government’s vaccine strategy is not less than demonetisation. Common mass will stand in a queue, will suffer a loss of money, health and life, and in the end, only a few industrialists will benefit,” tweeted Rahul Gandhi.

Meanwhile, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday slammed the Centre for showing insensitivity towards people during the COVID-19 pandemic, saying that when people are screaming for shortages of medical oxygen, medicines and hospital beds, the central leaders are seen laughing during election rallies.

The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 13,01,19,310 on Wednesday, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

India, currently witnessing a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, reported nearly 3 lakh fresh infections in the last 24 hours – the highest since the pandemic broke out last year.

As per the union health ministry, as many as 2,95,041 new COVID-19 cases and 2,023 deaths were reported, taking the total cases to 1,56,16,130, including 21,57,538 active cases.

As many as 1,32,76,039 recoveries have been reported so far, out of which 1,67,457 were reported in the last 24 hours. The death toll stands at 1,82,553.

  • ‘PM ignored COVID crisis to hide his lack of foresightedness’: Prashant Kishor hits out at Modi

    By PTI
KOLKATA: Poll strategist Prashant Kishor who is looking after the Trinamool Congress’ election strategy in West Bengal on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of ignoring the COVID-19 crisis to hide his lack of understanding and foresightedness.

Kishor’s statement came after Modi addressed the nation on the coronavirus situation amid a surge in cases.

He also alleged that the prime minister bluffed people to claim victory in the battle against the pandemic.

“ModiGovt handling of crisis: #1: ignore problem to hide lack of understanding & foresightedness #2: suddenly take control, use bluff & bluster to claim victory #3: if problem persists, pass it on to others #4: when situation improves, return with Bhakts’ army to take credit,” Kishor tweeted.

An eight-phase assembly election is being held in West Bengal between March 27 and April 29 and votes will be counted on May 2.

  • ‘Mamata providing misleading information on Centre’s COVID-19 measures’: Dilip Ghosh

    By PTI
KOLKATA: Alleging that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was carrying out a “false propaganda” to belittle the Centre’s measures to curb the spread of COVID-19, state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh urged people to steer clear of all “misleading information” provided by her.

Trashing Banerjee’s charges that Modi had exported a major chunk of vaccines, Ghosh said, “Our country was working on seven vaccines, of which two has been approved, produced in bulk and administered to at least 12.5 crore so far.”

“Statesmen from several countries have compared Modijis feat with that of Lord Hanuman who carried mountain on his shoulder (to cure Lord Laxman with medicinal plant). Modiji sent boxes of vaccine to other countries. We catered to our needs as well as those of our global friends.”

Accusing the TMC government of suppressing COVID-19 figures last year, Ghosh said the state had plunged into a major crisis but the CM skipped several meetings convened by the PM to help tackle the matter, and her government did not respond to missives of the Union health ministry.

“The TMC government had created confusion in people’s minds by frequently changing lockdown dates. The CM, herself, flouted lockdown guidelines by hitting the road, and encouraging assemblies at places.”

Slamming Banerjee for christening trains meant for returnee migrants as ‘Corona Express’, the Midnapore MP, during a press meet, said “around 30-40 lakh migrants wanted to return to Bengal but our chief minister was reluctant to give them entry.”

Claiming that Banerjee has entered into an understanding with the Congress, Ghosh further said, “I don’t know why Rahul Gandhi cancelled his rallies and Adhir Chowdhury is not campaigning anymore.”

Referring to the TMC supremo’s allegations that the saffron party was “conspiring to create communal disturbances” on Ram Navami, BJP state spokesperson Shamik Bhattacharya, who was also present at the meeting, said, “This is the first time a chief minister levelled such charges against a party.

“She made this remark during a meeting in a minority belt. It only goes on to show that she might be the one trying to foment trouble,” Bhattacharya said.

BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya, who is in the city, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be addressing four public meetings on April 23 in Bengal, and a limited number of audience would be allowed at the venue.

Modi is set to address rallies at Malda, Baharampur, Seuri and South Kolkata on Friday.

“We had followed the same protocol during Bihar assembly polls with strict adherence to all election commission guidelines,” Malviya added.

  • Bengal elections: Poll verdict in Matua bastions crucial for BJP before CAA implementation

    By PTI
BONGAON/KRISHNANAGAR: With citizenship for refugees having emerged as one of the poll planks of the BJP in its battle for Bengal, Matua bastions and the verdict they present this election will prove to be a test case for the party that had been weighing the pros and cons before implementing a new law enacted for the purpose.

Assembly seats in the Matua strongholds of Bongaon and Krishnanagar, close to the India-Bangladesh border, are set to go to polls in the sixth phase of elections, on April 22.

Matuas, who make for a large chunk of the state’s Scheduled Caste population, had been migrating to West Bengal since the 1950s, primarily due to religious persecution in erstwhile East Pakistan and then Bangladesh.

With an estimated three million members in the state, the community influences result in at least four Lok Sabha seats and 30-40 assembly seats in Nadia, North and South 24 Parganas districts.

Apart from the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), two other aspects — identity politics and regional development — have also surfaced as decisive factors this election, as bitter rivals TMC and the BJP go all out to woo the community with several promises aimed at solving local problems.

“The TMC and the CPI(M) governments have done nothing for the Matuas. It is the BJP that spared a thought for the community. Hence, it promised citizenship.”

“The BJP passed the CAA in Parliament. But the TMC has opposed it tooth and nail in Bengal. We will vote against this injustice,” said BJP MP Santanu Thakur, who is also the younger scion of the Matua Thakurbari — an influential socio-religious sect.

Countering him, Mamatabala Thakur, a former TMC MP and the daughter-in-law of the community’s late matriarch Binapani Devi, said the BJP was fooling the refugees with false promises.

“Matuas are citizens of this country. They don’t need any other proof of citizenship,” she said.

The CAA seeks to grant citizenship to migrants belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Christian, Jain and Parsi communities who came to the country from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan on or before December 31, 2014.

According to sources in the community, the citizenship law has emerged as a major issue among the community members as they are apprehensive that if the NRC exercise is conducted prior to CAA implementation, they might be branded as “foreigners” who had entered India “without valid documents”.

“Most of them fled religious persecution in Bangladesh and migrated to India. Now, if we don’t give them citizenship, where will they go? CAA, for us, is not a political issue but a core ideological commitment,” Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh said.

Matuas, with their sheer size of the population and tendency to vote en bloc, just like the minorities, make for an enviable vote bank that all the political parties had tried to secure since the nineties.

TMC chief Mamata Banerjee had first reached out to the Matuas and other Schedule Caste communities, such as the Rajbanshis, around a decade ago.

She nominated members of the Matua Thakurbari as candidates in the 2011 elections, and that, in, turn, played a role in paving the way for her victory.

However, the BJP’s promise to implement the CAA also paid off and the saffron party won all Matua-dominated Lok Sabha seats in 2019 and took the lead in almost 35 assembly segments.

The TMC quickly went on a course correction drive and regularised all refugee colonies, giving them land rights, besides politically exploiting the delay and confusion over the implementation of CAA.

“The Matua community knows what Mamata Banerjee government has done for their development. We don’t need advice from the BJP on what needs to be done. I would want to know why, despite tall claims, the Centre has implemented CAA yet?” TMC MLA from Habra and state minister Jyotipriyo Mullick asked.

Banerjee, who has allotted Rs 10 crore for the Matua development fund, has cautioned Matuas that citizenship law would add to their woes, and the saffron camp may just classify them as foreigners following its implementation.

Although the BJP is confident of pocketing Matua votes this time, the brewing resentment among a section of the community members over the delay in implementation of CAA may cost the saffron camp dearly in some seats.

“In 2019, the promise of citizenship did wonders for the BJP in the Matua belt. But this time, the delay may spoil our chances to an extent. It is to be seen whether our message that CAA would be implemented soon still holds water in this region,” a senior saffron camp leader said.

BJP national vice president Mukul Roy, who is contesting the elections from Krishnanagar Uttar seat, however, is certain that Matuas would favour the BJP over its rivals.

“Various political parties, including the TMC, have betrayed Matuas from the beginning; it is only the BJP which is fighting for the cause of their citizenship. Matuas are firmly with us,” Roy, who is in the fray after a gap of two decades, said.

  • ‘Centre can speak to ISI but not Opposition leaders’: Priyanka Gandhi on Modi government’s COVID strategy

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: In a scathing attack on the Union government, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday claimed that the Centre can hold talks with Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) but can’t talk to Opposition leaders amid the prevailing crisis.

Speaking to ANI the senior Congress leader said, “This government can speak to Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). They are speaking to ISI in Dubai. Can’t they talk to Opposition leaders? I don’t think there is any Opposition leader who’s not giving them constructive and positive suggestions.”

Targetting the Prime Minister amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis, she said, “Prime Minister should stop his public relation exercise and talk to the people and opposition parties over the crisis of COVID-19.”

“Today I do not think that there is any opposition leader who is not giving constructive and positive suggestions. And all the political parties are saying that we are with you (Centre). In a democracy, work only progresses only by discussion, sometimes criticism has to be heard on such an occasion the whole country is facing this crisis,” she said.

“This tu-tu main-main does not suit anyone, you (Prime Minister) have to stand with the public, add us all, we will fight together,” she added.

“If opposition leaders do not raise their voice then who will?” she asked.

“Manmohan Singh ji was Prime Minister for 10 years. Everyone knows how dignified a person he is. If he is giving suggestions when the nation is facing a pandemic, then suggestions should be taken up with the same dignity with which they were offered,” she said.

The comments of the Congress General Secretary came after former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Sunday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to “resist the temptation to look at the absolute number of vaccinations and focus on the percentage of the population vaccinated”.

In a letter to PM Modi, Singh also listed suggestions for consideration “in a spirit of constructive cooperation”. The letter was immediately rebutted by Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan who said history shall be kinder to Singh if his offer and valuable advice was followed by Congress members.

Meanwhile, continuing her attack on the Centre, the Congress General Secretary said, “For God’s sake, Prime Minister Narendra Modi do it now. Use every resource you have at your disposal to move it to where it is needed. People are dying. Every life matters.”

She also targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party for its continued election campaign in West Bengal despite a spike in COVID-19 numbers.

“The government needs to be sensitive at this time the Prime Minister needs to show up, he needs to get off the stage where he is laughing and cracking jokes,” she said.

In view of the spike in COVID-19 cases, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday announced the suspension of all his forthcoming public rallies in poll-bound West Bengal and advised other political leaders to do the same.

Meanwhile, the Congress General Secretary said that she has written to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath asking him to waive off permission by Chief Medical Officier for admitting COVID-19 patients to the hospitals.

Talking about the health care system in the state, she said that COVID-19 patients are facing a dire situation where they have to wait for hours before being hospitalised.

Nearly 3 lakh new COVID-19 cases and over 2,000 deaths were reported in India on Wednesday, a record-high since the pandemic broke last year.
