  • Will remain MP but quit politics: Babul Supriyo after meeting BJP chief JP Nadda

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: The BJP on Monday managed to persuade Babul Supriyo against resigning as a Lok Sabha member even as the singer-turned-politician insisted that he will no longer be part of active politics.

Speaking to reporters after meeting BJP president J P Nadda, the Asansol MP said he will continue to discharge his constitutional responsibilities as a parliamentarian but withdraw from politics and leave his official residence in the national capital.

His decision will be a big reprieve to the BJP as it would not have liked to be forced to contest a bypoll against the Trinamool Congress, which is upbeat after handing a comprehensive defeat to the saffron party in the recent West Bengal assembly polls.

Upset at being dropped from the Union Council of Ministers by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the two-term MP had announced that he will resign as MP and quit politics.

He told reporters on Monday that Home Minister Amit Shah and Nadda had spoken to him, and he has taken a final decision after thinking over their suggestions.

He asserted that whatever he had said recently, some of which was seen to be critical of the party’s affairs in the state, was in the interest of the BJP and that he stood by that.

  • JDU delegation meets Amit Shah to press for caste-based census

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Pushing its agenda of a caste-based census, a delegation of Janata Dal (United) MPs led by new party president Lalan Singh met Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday with the demand.

The JD(U) had also passed a resolution in support of the caste-based counting of population, a move with potentially wide political ramifications, in its national executive meeting on Saturday where Singh was elected its president.

Speaking to reporters, Singh said the Bihar assembly had passed unanimous resolutions in 2019 and 2020 for having census on the caste lines, and added that it is now for the central government to take a final decision.

Shah, he said, assured them that the matter will be discussed.

To a question that some Bihar BJP leaders have expressed reservation against such a move, he claimed that he was unaware of their stand but noted that the saffron party had also backed the resolutions in the assembly.

The delegation of JD(U) MPs had sought time from the PMO to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to press for its demand but was asked to meet Shah.

While the BJP and the JD(U), whose most prominent face is Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, are allies, the two parties have had differences over a host of issues.

With groups representing caste interests often exaggerating the headcount of their community members, the JD(U) president said India’s population will work out to be three times the actual number if all these claims are taken at their face value as he pushed for a caste-based census.

This will also help the government in framing its development policies targeting different communities, he said, noting that it was in 1931 when the caste-based census was last done.

  • Five former Akali leaders join BJP ahead of Punjab Assembly elections

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Five former Shiromani Akali Dal leaders and a former TV host joined the BJP Monday as the saffron party works to strengthen its presence in Punjab, a state set for a multi-cornered contest in the assembly polls scheduled for early next year.

Amanjot Kaur Ramoowalia, a former member of Akali Dal’s women wing and daughter of former Union minister Balwant Singh Ramoowalia, Gurpreet Singh Shahpur, Chand Singh Chatha and Baljinder Singh Dakoha, all associated with the former BJP ally, joined the saffron party in presence of a number its leaders, including Cabinet minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

Pritam Singh, a Dalit leader formerly associated with the SAD, and Chetan Mohan Joshi, a former TV anchor, also joined the party.

Welcoming them, Shekhawat said their joining the BJP showed which way the wind is blowing in Punjab before the elections and alleged that some parties, which have been “rejected” across the country, are misleading farmers in their quest for power.

People, however, are aware that the Modi government is working in national interest and for development of Punjab, he added, noting that the leaders who have joined the party are “well-known” and come from families with a long political background.

BJP general secretary Dushyant Kumar Gautam said people of Punjab want peace and happiness, and are looking at Prime Minister Narendra Modi with hope.

They see the BJP as the alternative, he claimed.

Another party general secretary Tarun Chugh also spoke.

With Punjab farmers, most of whom are Sikhs, seen to be unhappy with the three farm laws enacted by the Modi government, the BJP has been reaching out to them.

  • Home minister trying to find solution to tensions between Assam and Mizoram: Governor K Hari Babu

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Amid tensions between Assam and Mizoram over the recent border clash, Mizoram Governor K Hari Babu met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday and said the Centre is trying to find a solution to the issue.

Meanwhile, BJP MPs from Assam, including Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, are also meeting the prime minister in the afternoon.

Babu is scheduled to meet Home Minister Amit Shah later in the afternoon.

Talking to reporters in Parliament after meeting the prime minister, Babu said the incident was “very unfortunate”.

“The home minister is trying to defuse the tension and he is trying to find the solution Both chief ministers (of Assam and Mizoram) have committed that peace will be restored,” he said.

At least six Assam Police personnel and one civilian were killed and more than 50 people injured, including the police chief of the district of Cachar, in a fire-fight between the police of the two states on a disputed stretch of their boundary, near Dholai in Cachar district on July 25.

Tension along the border with Mizoram in Cachar and Hailakandi districts of Assam have been escalating since October 2020 with frequent incidents of burning of houses and encroachment of land.

The two states share a 164.6-km border between Assam’s Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts, and Mizoram’s Kolasib, Mamit and Aizawl districts.

Both states have differing interpretations of their territorial border.

While Mizoram believes that its border lies along an ‘inner line’ drawn up in 1875 to protect tribals from outside influence, Assam goes by a district demarcation done in the 1930s.

  • Shiv Sena slams BJP over ‘demolish Sena Bhavan’ remark by its leader Prasad Lad

    By ANI
MUMBAI: Shiv Sena on Monday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the alleged statement by its leader Prasad Lad of demolishing the Shiv Sena Bhavan.

In its editorial mouthpiece, Saamana, the Shiv Sena said, “The end is near for the BJP in Maharashtra because of the way they are behaving. Whosoever has looked scornfully towards Shiv Sena Bhavan, their leaders and their party were washed away in the gutters of Worli.”

‘Shiv Sena Bhawan Todenge’ such talk by some degenerate BJP people and clapping on it by Marathi leaders sitting on stage, is this not a traitor to Marathi pride, the Shiv Sena said.

“Many people having political differences with Shiv Sena, challenged Shiv Sena from time to time. But Shiv Sena stood on those challenges, however, those political opponents never talked about demolishing Shiv Sena Bhavan,” the party said in Saamana.

“Shiv Sena Bhavan has a statue of Balasaheb Thackeray as well as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. His saffron flag is hoisted at the Bhavan. This perturbs some people, that is why something destructive like the vandalism of Shiv Sena Bhavan was said,” it said.

“BJP was once a party of loyal workers, connected to the grassroots. There was no place here for outsiders or the degenerates. But now people with the original ideology of the party are pushing forward lowly people. That is why the end of the party is nearing,” it added.

While speaking regarding his statement and apologising for it, Maharashtra BJP leader Prasad Lad said, “Yesterday our office was being inaugurated in Mahim. I had received phone calls from many Police personnel who requested that Nitesh Rane and I shouldn’t go there or at least not take out a rally if we go.”

“In my address, I had said that when we come to Dadar-Mahim, then such huge police security is deployed here as if we are going to attack Shiv Sena Bhawan. I have apologised for the statement,” he added.

Also, Yesterday, laying the foundation stone of a redevelopment project in Mumbai along with NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said, “We’re now used to hear criticism but we’re not scared of criticism anymore…We’ve started responding well and strongly to those criticisms, we have started slapping back. We’ll give such tight slaps, that the other person will never get up.”

  • Congress, AAP hold protest events as BJP celebrates Vijay Rupani’s 5 years as Gujarat CM

    By PTI
AHMEDABAD: The Congress held protests across Gujarat on Sunday to coincide with the ruling BJP kicking off celebrations for nine days to mark Chief Minister Vijay Rupani completing five years in office.

Rupani was sworn in as CM on August 7, 2015 in place of Anandiben Patel and occupied the top chair again after the BJP swept to power in December, 2017.

The Congress’ protests were centered on the state’s education policy, while many leaders also attacked the Rupani government for “wasting taxpayers’ money” by holding such celebratory events.

Several Congressmen were detained as they took out rallies holding placards and shouting slogans against the government as part of the party’s “save education programme.”

“In Gujarat, people are being looted in the name of privatisation of education. Instead of being ashamed of this, the BJP government is organising celebrations using taxpayers’ money.

“We demand that the Gujarat government immediately stop this policy of privatisation of education, withdraw decisions to shut down primary schools and fill vacancies in all government schools and colleges,” state Congress chief Amit Chavda said.

Chavda claimed over 10,000 classrooms in government schools were in dilapidated condition, while colleges were facing staff crunch by as much as 40 per cent.

Among the leaders who took part in the Congress protests were Paresh Dhanani, Bharatsinh Solanki and Arjun Modhwadia, a party release said, adding that it would organise programmes parallel to the government’s nine-day celebrations.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party held events as part of its ‘agyaan diwas’ stir, the name chosen to mock the BJP’s ‘gyan shakti diwas’.

An AAP release claimed over 6,000 government schools were closed due to “lack of students”, while there were 14,000 schools where students of different classes were studying in the same room.

Talking to reporters, CM Rupani said Chavda should answer as to what the Congress did about education when it was in power at the Centre and in the state.

He further said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was setting up IITs, IIMs and AIIMS in all states to increase the reach of education.

  • Samyukta Kisan Morcha says BJP’s ‘Tiranga Yatra’ in Haryana plan to instigate, defame farmers

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Sunday appealed to Haryana farmers not to oppose the ‘Tiranga Yatra’ of the state’s BJP unit claiming that it was a “devious plan” to instigate and defame farmers.

The umbrella body of 40 farmer unions said in a statement that the other programmes of boycott and flag protests against the BJP and the JJP will continue.

“The proposed ‘Tiranga Yatra’ of the BJP’s Haryana unit is mainly to instigate farmers and defame them.

SKM urged farmers to see through this devious plan of BJP, and to not let this dirty tactic, under the guise of the national flag, succeed,” it said in the statement.

The Haryana BJP’s two-week-long ‘Tiranga Yatra’ ahead of the 75th Independence Day began from Bhiwani on Sunday, with party’s state chief O P Dhankar claiming that thousands of farmers also joined the event.

Dhankar, along with state Agriculture Minister J P Dalal, rode a tractor with tricolour fixed on its both sides during the ‘yatra’, which was taken out on a 30-km-long route from Bahal to Loharu.

The SKM also said the ‘Kisan Sansad’ will continue at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Monday.

“The Kisan Sansad, despite the site of the Sansad in Jantar Mantar being flooded with water, is functioning in a disciplined manner, with detailed deliberations.

In Chhattisgarh, a parallel Kisan Sansad was run by the state Kisan Sabha on Friday, in solidarity with the Kisan Sansad near the Parliament,” it said.

The Kisan Sansad is part of the latest strategy of the farmers who have been protesting against the Centre’s three contentious farm laws at multiple Delhi borders since November last year.

The farmers have expressed fear that the new laws will eliminate the Minimum Support Price system and leave them at the mercy of the big corporations.

Over 10 rounds of talks with the government that has been projecting the laws as major agricultural reforms have failed to break the deadlock between the two parties.

As part of these Kisan Sansad sessions, 200 farmers from the protest sites participate in a mock Parliament session at Jantar Mantar during which issues concerning the farming community are discussed.

  • Babul Supriyo’s edited Facebook post on resignation sparks speculation on his next political move

    By Express News Service
KOLKATA: Hours after writing a cryptic post on his Facebook account dropping hits at quitting politics, former Union minister Babul Supriyo edited the same triggering speculation on his next political move. While he indicated in the original post that he will not be joining any politial party, in the edited version, Supriyo has deleted the same.

On Saturday, the MP from Asansol took names of Trinamool Congress, Congress and CPI(M) while saying he is not joining any political party. Late on Saturday, he edited the content of his post and took out that portion.

“I am confirming that no one has called me. Neither I am going anywhere. I am a one-team player. Have always supported one team Mohun Bagan, have done only BJP. That’s it,” the MP had written before taking out that part. In his first edit, Supriyo announced that he is quitting as MP as well.

“It is a clear indication that Supriyo doesn’t want to shut all doors. Rather, he has opened it by editing the content. He actually fuelled to the speculations of his next political move,’’ said a senior BJP leader.

In his Saturday’s Facebook post, Supriyo had made it clear that there was a link between his removal from the cabinet and his decision to quit politics. He also pointed out difference of opinion between him and BJP’s West Bengal leadership.

Replying to a comment describing the editing by the singer-turned-politician was a reflection of his confusion, Supriyo replied, “That’s exactly what editing is…you try to male an article better ! Not history, loot at future. Read it fresh with a cool head tmrow morning.’’

In a separate post on Sunday, Supriyo uploaded reactions of BJP’s West Bengal president Dilip Ghosh and TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh after his Facebook Post announcing his resignation. “Some people used languages according to their choice. I accept all these. I will answer to their comments by delivering without being an MP or a minister. I will feel good if I can build up a hospital in the name of my mother in Asansol and distribute blankets for the poor with the earning of my stage performance,’’ he wrote.

  • Congress ‘James Bond of spying’ when in govt; Pegasus ‘fabricated issue’: Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Attacking the Congress which has been protesting in Parliament demanding a discussion on the Pegasus snooping allegations, Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Sunday said the party was “James Bond of spying” when in power and it now wants to waste Parliament’s time over “fake and fabricated” issues.

Naqvi, who is the Rajya Sabha Deputy Leader, also accused the Congress and a few other Opposition parties of working with the policy of “rant and run” by making allegations and scooting off.

In an interview with PTI, the Minority Affairs Minister said the government is ready to discuss all issues that are related to people and expressed hope that the impasse between the government and the Opposition will be broken allowing Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to function smoothly.

Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have failed to transact any significant business, except passage of some bills, amid continued protests by Opposition parties over the Pegasus and farmers’ issues since the Monsoon session of Parliament commenced on July 19.

ALSO READ | Opposition parties likely to seek Supreme Court’s intervention in Pegasus issue

The Opposition and the government are locked in a standoff with the former seeking a debate over the Pegasus issue.

The senior BJP leader also rejected talk of the Parliament’s Monsoon session being curtailed and said there was no basis of such “rumours” as the session was to scheduled till August 13 and business is listed till then.

Asked if a middle path can be found to end the deadlock in Parliament, Naqvi said the Congress and a few other Opposition parties are adopting a “rant and run” formula and are not interested in participating in debate and discussion on people’s issues.

“They first said that we want a discussion on corona but then later did not agree to it. They said we want a discussion on farmers and then did not agree on that. There has been the problem of floods in various parts of the country, they are not showing any interest in that also or on the price rise issue that they talk about,” he said.

On the Opposition insisting on debating the Pegasus issue, Naqvi said they want to waste Parliament’s time on “fake and fabricated issues that have no identity” .

“Without wasting time, IT Minister (Ashwini Vaishnaw) had made a statement and they had an opportunity to get a clarification in Rajya Sabha. But instead of taking a clarification they created a ruckus and adopted a violent attitude,” he alleged.

Naqvi said most of the Opposition parties are interested in debate and discussion but unfortunately the Congress is trying to be their self-appointed head and in that attempt it is “propagating its own negative attitude as that of the Opposition”.

“They (the Congress) are trying to hijack the thinking of even those opposition parties that are thinking on constructive lines. Congress is trying to become a self appointed leader of the Opposition,” the Rajya Sabha MP said.

Naqvi said the Congress also tried to “mislead” people on the Rafale jets issue and wasted Parliament’s time and everybody knows what happened as they were exposed.

“These people (Congress) were the James Bond of spying (when in power). They spin a web of spying when in government and when in opposition create a hullabaloo alleging surveillance,” Naqvi said, making a reference to the fictional super spy character that novelist Ian Fleming created on which several movies have been made.

In the UPA time, their own finance minister had accused his government of spying on him, he said.

“They want to create that atmosphere even now, though there is no substance in these allegations,” the minister asserted on the Pegasus snooping row. An international media consortium has reported that over 300 verified Indian mobile phone numbers were on a list of potential targets for surveillance using Israeli firm NSO’s Pegasus spyware.

Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, two union ministers — Prahlad Singh Patel and Railways and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw — businessman Anil Ambani, a former CBI chief, and at least 40 journalists are on the list on the leaked database of NSO.

It is, however, not established that all the phones were hacked. The Congress and several other Opposition parties are demanding a Supreme Court-monitored probe into the allegations and also asking the government to come clean whether Pegasus spyware was used or not.

Naqvi said the government has stated that it is ready to discuss all issues that are related to the people and the Opposition parties should give notices over it on which the Speaker in Lok Sabha and the chairman in Rajya Sabha will decide.

The Rajya Sabha deputy leader said the government is reaching out to opposition leaders and there is no communication gap.

“In a day, three-four times discussion is happening with opposition leaders but unfortunately what path the leadership of the grand old party wants to adopt is baffling,” he said.

Asked about the Opposition’s charge of the government passing bills amid din without debate, Naqvi said they should look at their own history as to how many bills were passed by the UPA amid din.

“The din during their time would have been due to Commonwealth, 2G spectrum scams, but they don’t have any issue. It is an issueless Congress party,” he alleged.

“We humbly request the Opposition to participate in debate and discussion. They can give notices on the issues they want to discuss and the speaker and chairman will allot time and day,” he said.
