A dramatic twist in Indian wrestling trials has propelled Meenakshi Goyal into the spotlight ahead of the Senior Asian Wrestling Championships in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, from April 6-12. The 25-year-old from Haryana, known for her tenacity in the 50kg category, made a bold move to 53kg and emerged victorious by defeating Olympic hopeful Antim Panghal in the final showdown.

This wasn’t just any win; it was redemption. Meenakshi had lost to Antim twice before in trials, but her rigorous training under coach Kuldeep Malik paid off in spectacular fashion. The bout was a spectacle of endurance and skill, with both wrestlers pushing limits to gain supremacy. Antim, holder of three Asian medals and World Championships bronzes, was left reeling from the unexpected defeat.

The trials revealed a wealth of talent across categories. In women’s wrestling, Neelam powered through to 50kg gold via technical superiority against Priyanshi, Hansika took 55kg, and Mansi Lather claimed 68kg. Men’s freestyle saw Aman (61kg), Sandeep Singh Mann (79kg), and Mukul Dahiya (86kg) shine, while Greco-Roman aces Sachin Sahrawat (67kg) and Sunil Kumar (87kg) dominated their weights.

WFI’s comprehensive list for Senior Asians includes a robust men’s freestyle lineup: Ankush (57kg), Sujit (65kg), Abhimanyu (70kg), Jaydeep (74kg), Puneet (92kg), Vicky (97kg), Dinesh (125kg). Greco-Roman: Lalit (55kg), Sahil (60kg), Sunny (63kg), Anil (72kg), Aman (77kg), Prince (82kg), Nitesh (97kg), Joginder Rathi (130kg).

Women’s squad: Manisha (57kg), Neha (59kg), Mansi (62kg), Monika (65kg), Harshita (72kg), Kajal (76kg). Meanwhile, the Beach Asian Games team for China features men’s freestyle stars Siddharth (70kg), Amit (80kg), Aryan (90kg), Jaspreet Singh (90+kg), and women Priyanshi Prajapat (50kg), Pushpa Yadav (60kg), Jaspreet Kaur (70kg), Priya Malik (70+kg).

As preparations intensify, these teams embody India’s wrestling resurgence. Meenakshi’s upset serves as a rallying cry, setting the stage for potential glory in Bishkek and beyond. The nation watches with bated breath.
