Patna’s underbelly of deceit exposed: A smooth-talking fraudster convinced a local woman that her ordinary life was about to transform into glamour and power. With promises of Bollywood breaks and gubernatorial glory, he fleeced her for 10 lakh rupees in a meticulously planned con.

The victim, Anita Mishra, approached Rajiv Nagar police with a tale straight out of a thriller. Yuvaraj Pratap Singh, the accused, painted himself as a power broker with ‘reach to the top.’ He dangled the carrot of her son starring as a movie hero while assuring her own ascent to state governor.

Singh’s arsenal included fabricated property deals in prime locations like Shimla and Delhi. He even staged calls from ‘elite contacts’ Ashok and Shah Nawaz, pocketing 5 lakh immediately. ‘Your governor application is with the President now,’ he lied, before whisking her to Shimla for a sham land viewing, claiming another lakh for ‘hotel costs.’

The sting’s sophistication lay in its emotional manipulation, preying on a mother’s ambitions. Patna police have launched a manhunt, analyzing call records and transaction trails.

Adding to the city’s scam woes, electricity fraudsters struck Skepuri hard. Posing as utility workers, they terrified residents with disconnection threats, sending phishing links that siphoned 3.91 lakh from one ICICI account alone. Three victims lost 6.11 lakh total, while eight others across areas surrendered 13.34 lakh to varied ruses.

Experts highlight a surge in digital cons targeting the elderly and aspirational middle class. ‘Question every unsolicited offer,’ advises cyber cell chief. As investigations intensify, Patna residents are rallying for better financial literacy programs to combat these shadowy operators.

A cunning plot to infiltrate Indian Railways as a technician collapsed spectacularly in Bihar when advanced biometrics caught the fraudsters red-handed. Mukesh Kumar from Munger lacked confidence in clearing the 2024 recruitment drive, so he paid neighbor Ranjit Kumar Rs 6 lakh to impersonate him during exams.

Their masterstroke? A sophisticated hybrid photograph blending Mukesh’s and Ranjit’s facial traits via Google searches and photo editors. This ‘perfect’ image justified the selection process, from CBT in Patna to medicals in Bhopal. Mukesh reported for duty across multiple zones—Damoh, Sagar, Jabalpur—and progressed to training in Prayagraj.

The downfall came during a routine biometric check on November 14, 2025. The fingerprints and face scan clashed with the original applicant data, exposing the switch. Mukesh bolted to Bihar, but CBI swiftly apprehended him in Munger and nabbed Ranjit on his tip-off.

As probes deepen into potential repeat offenses by Ranjit, the case highlights biometrics’ role as a fraud deterrent. Aadhaar updates are flexible—addresses online or at centers for Rs 100, photos via live biometrics—but verification always demands matching scans, sealing the gap between real and fake identities.

Bihar’s Gopalganj district made headlines with the dramatic arrest of a fraudster running a sophisticated overseas job placement scam. The kingpin was nabbed red-handed, leading to the recovery of 349 passports that paint a grim picture of exploitation targeting vulnerable migrants.

Operating under the guise of a legitimate recruitment agency, the accused lured jobless individuals with dreams of high-paying jobs in the Middle East and Europe. Victims parted with their hard-earned savings and personal documents, only to be left stranded without jobs or refunds.

The breakthrough came through persistent undercover work by the local Special Task Force. ‘We acted on tips from affected families and conducted surveillance for weeks,’ said SP Gopalganj. The passports, some dating back years, indicate a long-running operation possibly involving forged travel papers.

Experts point out that such scams thrive in regions like Bihar due to high unemployment rates and lack of awareness. The state government has intensified monitoring of illegal agents, but challenges remain. This case underscores the perils of bypassing official emigration procedures.

As the probe expands, police are scrutinizing the accused’s financial transactions and mobile data for accomplices. Gopalganj Police has registered cases under relevant sections of the IPC and Emigration Act. Victims are being contacted to reclaim their documents, while authorities warn of stricter penalties for such crimes in future.
