  • Eight labourers killed, 17 others injured as speeding van overturns in Bengal

    CANNING: Eight labourers were killed and 17 others injured when a pick-up van overturned in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, police said on Monday.

    The accident occurred around 11.45 pm on Sunday, they said.

    The speeding vehicle, carrying close to 25 people, first hit an electric pole, then smashed into a tree before turning turtle, a police officer said.

    Five labourers died on the spot, and three others breathed their last at Chittaranjan Hospital in Kolkata, he said.

    Among the injured, five have been released, while 10 people are undergoing treatment at the hospital.

    “We have apprehended the driver and registered a case against him and the owner of the offending vehicle,” Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Baruipur Police District, Indrajit Basu, said.

    The South 24 Parganas district administration has handed over compensation amount of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased, officials said.

  • Bengal: Drunk car driver mows down bicyclist; hits pole, dies

    MALDA: A drunk car driver mowed down a bicyclist and hit an electric pole a kilometre away, causing his death and injuries to his co-passenger in West Bengal’s Malda district, police said on Monday.

    The accident took place in Char Kadirpur area in Malda police station area on Sunday night, a police officer said.

    The two men in the car were returning from a marriage function in an inebriated condition, he said.

    The 35-year-old car driver and the 22-year-old bicyclist, both residents of English Bazar town, died on the spot and their bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, the officer added.

  • Four mowed down by dumper in Bengal

    BARDDHAMAN: Four persons, including three members of a family, were mowed down by a speeding dumper on National Highway 2 in West Bengal’s Purba Barddhaman district on Sunday, police said.

    The incident took place in Alisha area as the daily- wagers were crossing the highway to catch a bus to their workplace in Bankura district when a Kolkata-bound dumper ran over them and fled the spot, a police officer said.

    The three family members, including a couple and their daughter-in-law, were taken to a state-run hospital, where doctors declared them dead, the officer said.

    The fourth person, the family’s neighbour, later succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at another hospital, he added.

  • 14 members of marriage party killed in Bengal road accident

    JALPAIGURI: Fourteen members, including four children, of a marriage party were killed and 10 others injured due to a collision between a stone-laden truck and their three vehicles in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district.

    The accident occurred in Jaldhaka area in Dhupguri block on Tuesday night, they said.

    The cars of the marriage party were going towards Dhupguri on the wrong side of the road and the collision took place due to dense fog, a senior police officer said.

    Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced an ex gratia of Rs 2.5 lakh each to the next of kin of those who were killed in the accident.

    The state government will provide Rs 50,000 each to those who were seriously injured, she said at a programme in Purulia.

    Banerjee also said Rs 25,000 would be given to those whose injuries are not serious.

    “The loss cannot be compensated. But we would like to tell the families that the government is with them. We are providing compensation to the next of kin of the deceased and the injured persons. Our local MLA Sourav Chakraborty is already there and state minister Aroop Biswas is rushing to the spot,” Banerjee said.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was extremely anguished over the road accident and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the incident.

    He also said that Rs 50,000 each would be given to those injured, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

    Ten injured people are undergoing treatment in Jalpaiguri Super Speciality Hospital, the police officer said.
