  • Maharashtra: Tribal man verbally abused, beaten up by local BJP leader, three others in Palghar

    PALGHAR: A 57-year-old tribal man was allegedly beaten up and verbally abused by a local leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and three others in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, police said on Tuesday.

    The police on Monday registered an FIR against Bharat Rajput, the newly appointed president of the BJP’s Palghar district unit, and three others under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506(2) (criminal intimidation) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, an official said.

    Rajput’s brother Jagdish, one Vishal Nandalskar and Rajesh Thakur are the other accused named in the FIR, he said.

    According to the police, the complainant is a resident of Navapada village and belonged to the Adivasi-Warli community.

    On August 4, a local organisation called on the complainant, who is a farmer and social worker, inviting him to put forth issues relating to roads and water in the village, and he accompanied them, the official said.

    The man later received a phone call from Rajput asking him to meet him at his office, and when he arrived at the premises, the BJP leader was allegedly furious at him for accompanying people from the other organisation, he said.

    Rajput and the other accused allegedly verbally abused the complainant used casteist slurs against him and beat him up. They also warned him of dire consequences, the official said.

  • Uttar Pradesh: Youth beaten to death on suspicion of stealing guava in Aligarh

    LUCKNOW: A man, in his 20s, was beaten to death for allegedly stealing guava from an orchard in Aligarh district in western UP on Saturday. Two persons have been arrested in the case so far, the police said on Sunday.

    “While returning from the forest and passing through the orchard, Om Prakash picked up a guava from the ground. The owners Bhim Sen and Banwari saw the fruit in the hands of Om Prakash. Assuming that Om Prakash had stolen the fruit from the orchard, both the orchard owners started thrashing him brutally with lathis and heavy objects until he crashed to the ground and turned unconscious,” said the distraught brother adding that the injuries sustained by the victim were conspicuous on his body.

    The police said that the victim, who belonged to Scheduled Caste (SC) was found lying unconscious and taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

    “On receiving information that a man was injured, police reached the spot and sent the victim to the hospital. He died during treatment. Two persons have been arrested on the basis of the complaint filed by relatives of the victim. Further investigation into the case is on,” said circle officer AK Pandey.

    The Aligarh police have registered a case of murder and invoked relevant sections of SC/ST Act against two accused, including the owner of the orchard, who were named by the victim’s family in the complaint lodged with the police.

    The police have also sent the body for post-mortem and further details will be known after a thorough investigation.
