The countdown to Assam’s 2026 Legislative Assembly polls has begun in earnest, and All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) is wasting no time. The party dropped its first candidate slate on Friday, naming contenders for 17 seats across the state, a clear bid to expand its footprint beyond Bengal.

Guided by Mamata Banerjee’s vision, TMC’s Assam chapter selected a mix of fresh and experienced leaders from varied geographies. Highlights include Udangsree Narzary for Baokhungri in Kokrajhar, Momin Nur Islam in Dhubri’s Bilasipara, and Arif Akhtar Ahmed from Goalpara’s Jaleswar.

Bongaigaon’s Abhayapuri sees Kaushik Ranjan Das, Bajali’s namesake constituency fields Kalyani Kalita. Kamrup contributes Dulu Ahmed for Chamarigaon and Bhogolal Rabha for the ST-reserved Boko-Chaygaon. Nalbari’s Barhetri has Amirul Islam, Tamulpur’s Goreswar (ST) features Rajan Chauhan, and Darrang’s Mangaldai backs Hare Krishna Deka.

Dhemaji’s ST seat is Narendra Kumar Pawa’s turf, while Tinsukia pits Jiten Nag against Digboi incumbents and Dilip Moran for Makum. Cachar’s Barak Valley gets Tapas Das in Udharband, Fazlur Rahman Laskar in Katigorah, and Shahjahan Laskar in Sonai.

Spanning Brahmaputra and Barak valleys plus Bodoland, the picks reflect TMC’s focus on tribal, minority, and regional voices. Party leaders extended best wishes, framing this as a mission to serve the people and offer a viable third option amid BJP-Congress rivalry.

This proactive announcement sets TMC apart, potentially drawing defectors and independents. With Assam’s complex ethnic mosaic, these candidates’ ability to connect on development, identity, and governance will be crucial. Expect ripple effects as other parties respond in the coming months.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the arrest of 16 individuals for alleged illegal cattle slaughter during Eid-ul-Zuha. Cattle parts were recovered from various locations across Assam. Five illegal slaughtering sites were discovered in the Barak Valley districts of Cachar (Gumrah, Silchar, and Lakhipur) and Karimganj (Badarpur and Banga). Sarma stated that the Constitution protects religious freedom but also upholds law and order, emphasizing that strict action will be taken against all violators, regardless of their background. Incidents of road blockades and clashes between communities and police were also reported in Hojai, triggered by the discovery of suspected cattle meat. The Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021 restricts cattle slaughter in areas with significant populations of Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs, and within a five-kilometer radius of religious sites. Police are investigating reports of meat being thrown at premises in Hojai and near Cotton University in Guwahati.

Authorities recovered cattle parts from various locations across Assam. Five illegal slaughtering sites were identified in the Barak Valley districts of Cachar and Karimganj.
