    By PTI

MUMBAI: A Bangalore-bound Akasa Air flight from here returned to the city airport due to a burning smell in the cabin, which later turned out to be due to a bird strike, a DGCA official said on Saturday.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation is looking into the incident, the official said.

The number of passengers on board the flight could not be immediately known.

“The aircraft VT-YAE, operating Akasa Air flight AKJ1103 from Mumbai for Bangalore was involved in air turnback due to the burning smell felt in the cabin. The smell increased as the thrust was increased,” said the official.

The airline’s response to the incident was awaited. The DGCA official said, however, no other abnormality including in engine parameters was observed.

“After landing during the inspection, bird remains were found on engine number 1 of the aircraft,” he said and added that, “the burning smell was due to bird strike,” he stated. Akasa Air started its operations on August 7 this year.

  • Apollo hospital unit claims completion of 100 robotic cardiac surgeries

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The Bangalore unit of a leading private healthcare group has completed 100 robotic cardiac surgeries, which it claimed was a “first” such achievement for any hospital in the country.

In a statement, the Apollo Hospitals group on Monday said doctors at its Bangalore hospital had also performed a complex mitral valve cardiac surgery using robotic-assisted minimally invasive “da Vinci robotic system in under 70 minutes, a landmark achievement in interventional cardiology.”

“Cardiovascular diseases tend to affect patients in the most productive years of their lives resulting in catastrophic social and economic consequences.”

“The establishment of a robot-assisted cardiac surgery programme requires a tremendous amount of dedication and preparation, and we are proud to be India’s first hospital to complete 100 robotic cardiac surgeries since the program’s inception in late 2019,” claimed Sathyaki Nambala, senior consultant, cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, at the hospital.

Nambala, also head of the robotic cardiac surgery unit at Apollo hospital, Bangalore, said, in comparison to traditional open-heart surgery, which involves opening up the chest by splitting the breastbone, the da Vinci Xi’s innovative technology allows for complex cardiovascular surgeries to be performed through smaller incisions and precise motion control.

“Robotic cardiac surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that helps patients return to their everyday life much faster than open-heart surgeries.”

“Surgeons use the da Vinci surgical system to operate through 8 mm holes called ports and a magnified 3D high-definition vision as well as tiny wristed instruments that bend and rotate much more than the human hand aid in surgery,” the statement said.

Reducing the chance of infection makes it an ideal procedure for people with diabetes and older patients, hospital authorities said.

Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director, Apollo Group of Hospitals said, “The da Vinci surgical system has assisted us in providing the best possible surgical outcomes, and the completion of more than 100 successful robotic cardiac surgeries attests to our commitment to providing the most recent and highest quality of care.”

  • Covid-19 vaccine, an example of govt-private partnership: Nirmala Sitharaman

    By Express News Service
BENGALURU : “India has sent Covid vaccines to over 100 countries and this is a classic example of how the private sector stood up to strengthen the image of India. It gives the message that we have developed vaccines, done vaccine research and scaled up production, based on the demand which is expanding by the minute,” said Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, speaking at a post-budget interaction held by the Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Bengaluru on Sunday.

“This shows inherently what India can contribute when the private and government sectors work together in addressing what is an important, life-saving intervention. With this, we are saying that India’s growing and aspiring needs and demands across sectors cannot be served just by state and central governments. The most important component is participation of the private sector,” she said.

Taking the example of Covid vaccine where India has become a world leader, she said that is how the country must approach its responsibilities which will be incomplete until the government plays the role of a facilitator and unless the private sector plays its role as a key driver. This is the message of the budget, she added.

Stimulus package“The budget has set the path for the next decade and for the current year too, as the stimulus package has been largely dependent on government borrowing. This was done aiming at sectors that provide a multiplier effect such as infrastructure. Public expenditure will be undertaken so the core sectors can be triggered for ripple effect on the economy,” she said.

The government has taken measures to manage debt to GDP ratio, fiscal management and other indicators of a healthy economy in such a way that, fiscal deficit will be brought to a healthy level soon, she said.

‘India can attract $100 bn remittances’ Health sector can transform a country and it is the largest industry as well as employer in the world, being a $10 trillion industry, said Dr Devi Shetty, chairman and founder, Narayana Health at an interaction with Nirmala Sitharaman. India needs a national strategy to attract $100 billion of annual remittance from health workers within five years. This can be fuelled by Indian doctors, nurses, technicians and other healthcare workers, he said.
