In a blistering critique, Union Minister G Kishan Reddy has charged the Congress-led Telangana government with orchestrating a brutal suppression of democratic norms. Speaking in Hyderabad on February 22, he described the state’s political climate as ‘chillingly worrisome’ amid escalating tensions.

The flashpoint: a violent assault on BJP MLA K Venkata Ramana Reddy’s camp office in Kamareddy, followed by the house arrest of key BJP figures including state president N Ramchander Rao. Reddy called this a blatant violation of fundamental rights.

When BJP leaders attempted to rally in support of their colleague, they were confined to their residences—a move Reddy likened to the dark days of Emergency. ‘This panic stems from BJP’s growing footprint; Congress is resorting to revenge tactics,’ he alleged.

Highlighting the selective targeting, Reddy noted unfounded accusations against the MLA and the audacious vehicle ramming by Congress affiliates, exposing law enforcement’s frailty. ‘Police should serve justice, not political agendas,’ he emphasized.

Despite the clampdown, Reddy affirmed BJP’s resolve: ‘We won’t be intimidated. We’ll champion people’s causes relentlessly.’ His call to the government: cease politically motivated detentions and honor democratic principles, or face public backlash.

Bandi Sanjay Kumar, another BJP heavyweight, labeled Rao’s detention unlawful, as he was en route to console violence victims. Slamming Congress-AIMIM for shielding attackers while jailing opposition, Sanjay declared a ‘police state’ prevails.

He rallied party cadres to remain vigilant, expose injustices, and stand with the aggrieved, underscoring BJP’s unyielding fight against what they see as authoritarian overreach in Telangana.

The political chessboard in Telangana’s Karimnagar Municipal Corporation shifted dramatically on Sunday as five councillors ditched their previous affiliations to join Congress, intensifying the race for mayor ahead of Monday’s crucial vote.

State ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and D. Sridhar Babu oversaw the induction of two AIFB members and three independents. Among them, AIFB’s Sai Jyoti, fresh from a BJP switch on Friday, realigned with Congress, underscoring the fluid loyalties in local politics.

BJP, the single largest party with 30 seats in the 66-member body, saw its momentum stall. Congress (14 seats), BRS (9), AIMIM (3), and independents (10) set the stage for intense horse-trading. The magic number for mayor is 34 votes, factoring in ex-officio members.

Union Minister Bandi Sanjay had engineered BJP’s position at 34 by absorbing four independents, including his ex-officio influence. Congress retaliated by poaching one back, gaining AIMIM support, and courting BRS. The latest defections elevate Congress to 31 seats, plus two ex-officio votes for 33.

Desperate for that final push, Congress has housed its flock in a Hyderabad hotel to prevent poaching. Echoing this turmoil, BJP leads Nizamabad Corporation with 28 divisions but grapples for a majority there too.

This whirlwind of defections highlights the razor-thin margins defining Telangana’s urban local body elections, with Karimnagar poised for a nail-biting finish.

Hyderabad erupted in political fervor as Union Minister of State Bandi Sanjay Kumar took a firm stand against a contentious notice served to the Maulana Azad National Urdu University. Declaring it ‘completely unacceptable,’ Sanjay accused bureaucratic overzealousness of targeting an institution vital to India’s linguistic diversity.

The notice, issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC), flagged alleged lapses in MANUU’s governance and fund utilization. This has ignited a firestorm, with Sanjay positioning himself as the defender of Urdu-medium education. During a press conference flanked by party workers, he dissected the notice point by point, calling it ‘baseless and motivated.’

‘Urdu University is not just a campus; it’s a symbol of India’s composite culture,’ Sanjay asserted. He recounted how MANUU has produced professionals in fields like IT, management, and journalism, all instructed in Urdu. Underlining the BJP’s commitment to all languages, he demanded a high-level inquiry into why the notice was rushed without due process.

Opposition voices, including those from Congress and AIMIM, have countered that Sanjay’s outrage is selective, ignoring past complaints against the university. Yet, student unions at MANUU have echoed his sentiments, halting classes and vowing sustained agitation until the notice is revoked.

This episode comes amid broader reforms in higher education, including the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasizes multilingualism. Sanjay linked the issue to these reforms, suggesting the notice contradicts the policy’s spirit. As tensions simmer, educationists call for dialogue over confrontation. The coming days will test the government’s balancing act between accountability and institutional freedom, with Sanjay’s words setting the tone for a larger national discourse.
