  • Backstreet Boys deliver ‘larger than life’ performance in Delhi-NCR

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Long queues, a wait of several hours and the humid weather all felt worth it to the fans of Backstreet Boys as the popular American band wrapped the India leg of their DNA World Tour with an exhilarating performance in the Delhi-NCR region.

After a gig in Mumbai, the boy band kept their date with Delhi-NCR fans intact with a performance spanning two hours at the Airia Mall in Gurugram on Friday.

Fans from all age groups, including teenagers, those in their mid-20s and 30s, and even the elderly, gathered to witness the concert of the band that dominated the music scene with numerous global hits in the 1990s and early 2000s.

The performance was scheduled to start at 7.30 pm but was delayed by a couple of minutes, leaving many desperate.

Soon the stage came alive with a sound of thunder and flickering of strobe light.

The crowd erupted in joy as the giant screen at the back of the stage displayed the names of the iconic quintet, comprising Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, AJ McLean, Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson.

Backstreet Boys were indeed back! The group, who last visited India in 2010, got down to business quickly, starting with “I Wanna Be With You” which left the crowd of over 12,000 exhilarated.

The first set included the songs that made the group a household name in America, — “The Call”, “Get Down (You’re The One For Me)” and “Don’t Want You Back”.

With their groovy and synchronised dance steps, the band proved age is just a number for them.

On multiple occasions, the quintet, dressed in all-black attire, would pause, only for the crowd to complete the lyrics.

As the first set ended, Littrel addressed the Delhi-NCR crowd with a ‘namaste’.

“I know it is not our first time in Delhi and it won’t be the last,” the singer said.

“It is because of each of you tonight that Backstreet Boys still exist.” The singer promised a trip down memory lane for the fans who have been following the group since it was formed in 1993.

What followed was the bevvy of soothing and soulful tracks — ranging from “Incomplete”, “More than That”, “Crazy for You”, “Alive” and “Shape of My Heart”.

During their entire performance, the group changed outfits on multiple occasions.

Carter took note of the humid weather and took off his jacket on the stage, leading to huge screams from the fans.

“Someone should have told me that it was going to be so hot tonight and that I should not have worn a jacket,” he said.

The singer asked the crowd to chant with him ‘Backstreet’s Back’ to show their love for the group.

In the next set, the band performed more favourites, including “Quit Playing Games” and “As Long as You Love”, for the crowd.

After performing a few more tracks and changing outfits once more, the group gathered on the stage to reminisce about starting the band 30 years ago.

“We all grew up together. You guys have started your families. We got three generations in here tonight.

We definitely have started our families, we’ve a lot of Backstreet babies. We want to thank you for being part of the Backstreet family for 30 years now,” Richardson said.

It was the singer’s maiden visit to the country.

Mclean said that it has been a crazy ride. “How about 30 more years? There won’t be much dancing though,” he added.

The band members revealed that they were teenagers when they came together to form the group; Mclean was 14, Littrell was 18, Dorough was 19, Carter was 12, and Richardson was the oldest at 21.

For the final set, the band performed a fusion mix of their all-time hit track “Everybody”, inviting the crowd’s loudest cheers.

More favourites such as “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”, “Chances” and “No Place”, followed.

After their final act, the band exited the stage, leaving many fans to wonder if this was it.

Some waited, while some made their way towards the exit.

But then the stage came alive once again. Backstreet Boys were not done yet.

Wearing silver outfits this time, the group performed one final song for the crowd — ‘Larger than Life’, accompanied by a spectacular fireworks display that outshone even the full moon.

  • Singer Aaron Carter drowned in tub from drug, inhalant, says coroner

    By Associated Press

LOS ANGELES: Singer and rapper Aaron Carter accidentally drowned in his bathtub as a result of sedatives he’d taken and gas used in spray cleaners he had inhaled, a coroner’s report said Tuesday.

Carter, the younger brother of the Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter, was found submerged and dead at age 34 in the bathtub of his home in Lancaster, California, on Nov. 5, the autopsy report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner said.

Sheriff’s deputies had been the last people to see Carter alive when they visited his house at 2 a.m. on Nov. 4 for a welfare check after he had been seen and heard “huffing” an inhalant on an Instagram live video, according to a police report included in the autopsy findings. He asked the deputies to leave, and they did.

The autopsy found that the sedative alprazolam, often sold under the brand name Xanax, was found in his system, as was the compressed gas difluoroethane, which the report says is “a gas commonly used as a propellant in air spray cleaners,” which “can induce feelings of euphoria when inhaled.”

The two substances incapacitated him in the tub, and caused the drowning, the report said.

Later in the evening, after deputies checked on Carter, he missed an appointment with a drug counselor, the police report said.

The following day, a person whom authorities called a house sitter at the time but whom the report identifies in quotes as a “housekeeper” came to Carter’s house to offer him coffee. She let herself in when she got no response and heard his dogs barking, according to the report.

The woman found him submerged, wearing a T-shirt and necklace, in a Jacuzzi-style tub with the jets running, and called 911. The operator told her to pull him out and perform CPR, according to the report. Paramedics immediately declared him dead when they arrived.

Investigators found several prescription bottles and multiple scattered cans of an electronic duster that he used for inhaling.

The report referred to Carter as “a celebrity with a known history of substance abuse” who had “multiple interactions with local police relating to the substance abuse.” It cited a particular history of inhalant abuse, and a recent relapse.

Carter began performing as a child in the 1990s, opening for acts including his brother’s boy band and Britney Spears. His career peak came in 2000 with the triple-platinum album “Aaron’s Party (Come Get It),” which produced hit singles including the title song and “I Want Candy.”

He also acted on television shows including “Lizzie McGuire,” and appeared on the family reality show “House of Carters” and “Dancing With the Stars.”

Carter for years had been open about his substance abuse struggles, detailing his issues with inhalants in a 2019 episode of the talk show “The Doctors.” He also said in the interview that he was taking medications for acute anxiety and bipolar disorder.

Nick Carter said after his younger brother’s death that “I have always held onto the hope that he would somehow, someday want to walk a healthy path and eventually find the help that he so desperately needed.”

  • Nick Carter remembers his ‘baby brother’ Aaron Carter

    By Associated Press

NEW YORK: The day after 34-year-old singer Aaron Carter was found dead at his home in Southern California, Nick Carter, the Backstreet Boys member, remembered his younger brother, saying that despite “a complicated relationship”, his love for him “never ever faded”.

In an Instagram post on Sunday, with photos of the two through the years, Nick Carter said his heart was broken after the death of the youngest of five Carter siblings, whom he called his “baby brother”.

“My heart has been broken today,” wrote Carter.

“Even though my brother and I have had a complicated relationship, my love for him has never ever faded. I have always held onto the hope that he would somehow, someday want to walk a healthy path and eventually find the help that he so desperately needed.”

Deputies responded around 11 am Saturday following reports of a medical emergency at Carter’s home in Lancaster, California. Authorities said a house sitter found a man in the bathtub in the home and resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

Carter had struggled with substance abuse and mental health.

In 2017, he attended rehab and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and on marijuana charges.

In 2019, Carter said on an episode of the talk show “The Doctors” that he was taking medication for acute anxiety, manic depression and multiple personality disorder.

That same year, Nick and Angel, Aaron’s twin sister, said they filed a restraining order against Aaron.

In September, Carter said he went into rehab for the fifth time in the hopes of regaining custody of his young son, Prince, with his fiance Melanie Martin.

At the time, Prince was under the court-ordered care of Martin’s mother.

“Sometimes we want to blame someone or something for a loss. But the truth is that addiction and mental illness is the real villain here,” Nick Carter wrote in the post.

“I will miss my brother more than anyone will ever know. I love you Chizz, now you get a chance to finally have some peace you could never find here on earth. God, Please take care of my baby brother.”

In 2012, their sister, Leslie Carter, died after falling in the shower in the year 2012 at the age of 25. Authorities said she had suffered an overdose of prescription medication.

Carter once said he felt his family partly blamed him for her death.

Carter, a singer, rapper and actor, opened for the Backstreet Boys tour in 1997, the same year his gold-selling debut self-titled album was released.

He reached triple-platinum status with his sophomore album, 2000’s “Aaron’s Party (Come Get It),” which produced hit singles including the title song and “I Want Candy.”

Carter’s acting credits included the television show “Lizzie McGuire” and an appearance on “Dancing With the Stars.” He starred alongside his brother, Nick, and their siblings BJ, Leslie and Angel Carter on the E! unscripted series “House of Carters” in 2006.

Hilary Duff, who starred in “Lizzie McGuire”, recalled Carter as having an “effervescent” charm, and said her “teenage self” loved him deeply.

“I’m deeply sorry that life was so hard for you and that you had to struggle in front of the whole world,” she wrote on Instagram.

Angel Carter, his twin sister, also responded on social media.

“My funny, sweet Aaron, I have so many memories of you and me, and I promise to cherish them,” she wrote on Instagram.

“I know you’re at peace now. I will carry you with me until the day I die and get to see you again.”

  • Singer-rapper Aaron Carter found dead in bathtub at California residence

    By AFP

LOS ANGELES: Aaron Carter, the American singer who soared to fame at the turn of the millennium with his hit album “Aaron’s Party (Come Get It),” died Saturday, TMZ said. He was 34 years old.

The entertainment outlet reported that the brother of Backstreet Boy Nick Carter was found dead in his tub at his residence in Lancaster, California.

A police spokesperson told AFP that officers responded to Carter’s home at 10:58 am and found a deceased body, but were not yet able to publicly identify the person.

Carter’s manager did not immediately respond to an AFP query.

The artist born December 7, 1987 in Tampa, Florida began performing at age seven, releasing his debut album at age nine in 1997.

His sophomore effort “Aaron’s Party (Come Get It)” sold three million copies stateside, propelling him to teen heartthrob status. He became a regular on preteen Nickelodeon and Disney shows, including an appearance on the popular “Lizzie McGuire.”

Carter toured with the boy band The Backstreet Boys — his elder brother is a member — as well as Britney Spears, and saw his next album, “Oh Aaron,” go platinum.

As he aged the musician’s star began to fade but Carter remained in the public eye, appearing on a number of reality shows and off-Broadway productions, and releasing some new music online.

But his personal life struggles became tabloid fodder, including apparent strife among the five Carter siblings and family fights over money.

In 2011 it was revealed that Carter had entered a treatment facility, with the star telling his fans that “the main thing in life is not to be afraid of being human.”

After leaving rehab the artist began doing one-off shows, and later a Canadian tour. He released another album in 2018.

He had filed a bankruptcy petition in 2013 over millions in debt, much of it tax-related. Carter also faced several run-ins with the law primarily over possession charges and reckless driving.

In 2017 he began to discuss publicly his arrests and skinny appearance that had fueled rumours of illness or illegal drug use.

He admitted himself to another treatment centre over prescription drug use aimed at anxiety and sleep issues, reporting improvement in 2018.

Earlier this year he told the Daily Mail he vied to no longer be seen as a “train wreck.”

“I am not how some people try to paint me,” he told the outlet. “If somebody wants to call me a train wreck, well I’ve been a train that’s been wrecked multiple times and derailed by many different things.”
