CANNES:  Pakistani film “Joyland”, written and directed by debutant Saim Sadiq, won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section of the 75th Cannes Film Festival on Friday, becoming the first-ever film from the subcontinent to bag the award.

“Joyland”, a drama about a Lahore family in the firm grip of deep-rooted patriarchy, was pipped to the section’s top award, the Un Certain Regard Prize, by the French film “Les Pires” (The Worst Ones), helmed by the Paris-based directing duo of Lisa Akoka and Romane Gueret.

“Les Pires” is the second female-helmed film in two years to win the coveted award. Last year, the Un Certain Regard prize was won by Kira Kivalenko’s “Unclenching the Fists”.

The award for “Joyland” represents a global breakthrough of immeasurable proportions for the relatively small Pakistani movie industry. Incidentally, “Joyland” also won the Prix Queer Palm, awarded by Jury chaired by filmmaker Catherine Corsini on Friday.

One of the central characters in the film is a transwoman played by a real-life transwoman Alina Khan The Un Certain Regard Best Director Award went to the Romanian director Alexandre Belc for “Metronom”, while the Best Screenplay Prize was bagged by the Israeli-Palestinian director Maha Haj for “Mediterranean Fever”.

Luxembourg actress Vicky Krieps, for her performance in Austrian filmmaker Marie Kreutzer’s “Corsage”, shared the best acting award with French actor Adam Bessa’s turn in Nathan Lotfy’s “Harka”. The Un Certain Regard jury was chaired by Italian producer-director-actress Valeria Golino.

  • ‘The Power of the Dog’, ‘CODA’, ‘Dune’ win big at BAFTA 2022

    By PTI

LONDON: Acclaimed Western film “The Power of the Dog” scooped the top prizes for best film and best director for Jane Campion at the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) 2022. Hosted by actor-comic Rebel Wils on, the award ceremony took place on Sunday at the Royal Albert Hall and was live-streamed in India on the streamer SonyLIV.

“The Batman” star Andy Serkis announced the winner for best film but not before he called out the government for its discriminatory treatment of refugees from Afghanistan and Ukraine, saying “all refugees are welcome but some are more than welcome”.

While announcing actor Emilia Jones singing act with the song “Both Sides Now” from “CODA”, Wilson said the performance takes the help of two interpreters — American Sign Language and British Sign Language.

“Luckily, though, in all sign languages, this is the gesture for Putin,” the host said as she raised her middle finger to Russian President Vladimir Putin over the Ukraine invasion.

“The Power of the Dog” star Benedict Cumberbatch accepted the award on the director’s behalf. The psychological drama set in Campion’s native New Zealand also won her the best film BAFTA which was collected by film’s producer Tanya Seghatachian.

Another big winner for the night was the coming-of-age comedy-drama “CODA”, which won director Sian Heder the gong for adapted screenplay. Heder, whose film follows the life of a child of deaf adults (CODA), thanked the deaf community for letting her in and extending their support to an outsider like her. The movie also won Troy Kotsur the BAFTA for best-supporting actor.

Kotsur, who became the first deaf actor in the SAG Awards history to win an individual prize, made a BAFTA record in the same category. Kotsur spoke through a sign language interpreter and thanked the British Academy for recognising his work and for providing the services of interpreters at such events.

Sci-fi spectacle “Dune”, directed by Denis Villenueve, bagged five BAFTAs in the technical categories, namely production design, special visual effects, cinematography, original score and sound. “King Richard” star Will Smith bagged best leading actor BAFTA for his role of Richard Williams, father and coach of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams.

It is the first BAFTA for the Hollywood A-lister who was recently named the best actor by SAG-AFTRA and Golden Globes. Since Smith was not in attendance, the movie’s director Reinaldo Marcus Green accepted the award on his behalf.

“This is such a personal film for Will. He would thank the Williams family. There is no film without them,” Marcus Green said.

In the best leading actress category, the BAFTA went to Joanna Scanlan for “After Love”, in which she played the role of a woman who discovers her husband’s secret family after his sudden death. Scanlan thanked BAFTA for the honour, saying “some stories have surprising endings”.

She also thanked writer-director debutant Aleem Khan and said the film was made with “extreme love, blood, sweat, and tears”. Like Smith, Ariana DeBose also continued her award run as she won the best supporting actress BAFTA for “West Side Story”.

An openly queer Afro-Latina DeBose plays Anita, a San Juan Hill seamstress and the older sister to female lead Maria (Rachel Zegler) in the modern adaptation of the musical by Steven Spielberg. “Belfast”, a black-and-white film by Kenneth Branagh, picked up the BAFTA for outstanding British film.

As he accepted the award with his team for his semi-biographical drama, Branagh made a case for theatrical releases, saying “All hail the streaming revolution, but all hail the big screen too. It’s alive! And long may they live together.

The studio also registered a win for the live-action adaptation of “Cruella” in the best costume department for veteran designer Jenny Beaven. “Summer of Soul” was judged the best documentary, directed by Questlove.

  • ACMs 2022: Morgan Wallen bags first major award after racial slur controversy

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: Country music star Morgan Wallen returned to his first award show since being embroiled in a racial slur controversy. Apart from attending the 2022 ACM Awards, he also took home Album of the Year.

As per Variety, Wallen bagged the award for his album ‘Dangerous: The Double Album’, marking his first major country music award since his 2021 N-word scandal.

In his acceptance speech, the singer said, “When I started this album, I was a kid. By the time I put it out, I was a father. And that’s become more important to me than anything else.” He also thanked his fans and those who have shown him “grace.”

Wallen further said, “To my son, this album would signify that his daddy was a fighter and he chased his dreams and worked hard to make them a reality. I want to say a special thank you to all the songwriters, producers and musicians that played on this album. I wish you were standing here next to me, this project would not be complete without all of you.”

For months following the scandal in 2021, Wallen’s music was dropped by top radio chains including Cumulus Media, iHeartRadio and Entercom, the cable network CMT, the satellite service SiriusXM and the streaming service Pandora. His music catalog was also removed from any visible spots on DSPs like Spotify and Apple Music.

Wallen has since apologised on several different occasions and revealed to Good Morning America’s Michael Strahan in July 2021 that he checked into a rehabilitation centre after the incident.

While Wallen came under fire after he was caught using the racial slur in a video last year, his award prospects and position on country music charts did not suffer much.

Last year, Wallen won three Billboard Music Awards despite being banned from the award ceremony. In December, his collaboration with rapper Lil Durk, titled ‘Broadway Girls’ landed the country singer at No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B/hip-hop chart.

Talking about this year’s ACM Awards ceremony, it was hosted by Dolly Parton, Jimmie Allen and Gabby Barrett. The event broadcasted live from Las Vegas on Prime Video.
