PANAJI: The Goa government has completed the first phase of auction of mining blocks with four companies winning bids for the extraction of ore from different mineral rich stretches of the coastal state, an official said on Thursday.

The state Directorate of Mines and Geology (DMG) had conducted the e-auctioning process which will pave way for the resumption of the state’s iron ore mining industry in the state.

The industry, which used to be one of the major revenue earners for the state, had come to a standstill in 2018 after the Supreme Court quashed 88 mining leases.

“The first phase of auctioning of the mining blocks has been completed. All the four blocks are assigned to the successful bidders,” a senior DMG official told PTI.

He said Vedanta Limited had won the bid for Bicholim-Mulgao mining block (North Goa) which has got more than 84 million tonnes of the iron ore reserve.

“Salgaocar Shipping Company Pvt Ltd won the bid for Shirigao-Mayem mineral Block in North Goa. The mine has more than 24 million tonnes of ore reserve,” he said.

Goa’s Rajaram Bandekar Pvt Ltd successfully bid for Monte-de-Sirigao mining block (North Goa) that has 10 million tonnes of ore available for extraction, the official said.

The fourth Block comprising Kalay Mines (South Goa) was won by Sociedade De Fomento Industries Private Limited.

The mine has got 16.731 million tonnes of iron ore in the unexplored lease area of 75 hectares, he said.

The Directorate of Mines and Geology, through the Metal Scrap Trading Corporation, had on September 30, 2022 invited tenders to e-auction four mining blocks – Mulgao, Sirigao-Mayem and Monte-de-Sirigao, all in Bicholim taluka, and Kalay mine in Sanguem taluka.

  • Degas, Picasso sculptures bring record prices in New York

    By AFP

UNITED STATES: A sculpture by Edgar Degas sold Thursday for $41.6 million at Christie’s in New York, the highest price paid at auction for a work by the French artist, while a bronze by Pablo Picasso also broke a record.

The Degas sculpture — “Petite danseuse de quatorze ans” — is a delicate bronze with a brown patina depicting a young ballerina in a muslin skirt with a ribbon in her hair.

It is not the original — which is on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington — but a cast made by Adrien-Aurelien Hebrard 10 years after the 1917 death of the impressionist.

That did not stop it from setting a new record for Degas, easily topping the previous high of 22.2 million euros set by another version of the same work in 2015.

The sculpture that sold on Thursday was one of 12 pieces from the collection of Anne Bass, an American businesswoman who died in 2020. She was the patron of several major American museums and the New York ballet, and was the wife of billionaire oil heir Sid Bass.

Among her collection were two paintings by American expressionist Marc Rothko, of which “Untitled (Shades of red)” sold for $66.8 million, and three works by Claude Monet. His “Parlement, soleil couchant,” a dark but luminous oil on canvas, sold for $75.96 million.

Christie’s also announced that Picasso’s “Tete de femme (Fernande)” became the artist’s most expensive bronze ever sold at auction, at $48.48 million.

The Spaniard held the record for the most expensive work of 20th Century artwork ever sold at auction until Monday night, when an iconic portrait of Marilyn Monroe by American pop artist Andy Warhol brought in $195 million. Picasso’s “Les Femmes d’Alger (Version ‘0’)” had previously set the record at $179.4 million in 2015.

    By PTI

LOS ANGELES: 1940 comic marking Marvel superhero Captain America’s first appearance has been sold at an auction today for USD 3.1 million.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the price is just short of the record of USD 3.6 million, set in 2014 for Spider-Man’s first comic appearance.

The “Captain America Comics No 1” was sold as part of Heritage Auctions’ comics and comic art events.

The comic was released in December 1940, a year before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that would push the United States into World War II, and features one of the comics medium’s most iconic covers: the hero punching Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

Comic legends Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created Captain America for Timely Comics, the predecessor to Marvel Comics.

Captain America aka Steve Rogers made his debut in Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2011 with “Captain America: The First Avenger”.

Hollywood star Chris Evans essayed the role of the superhero. He reprised the part in standalone projects “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, and “Captain America: Civil War” as well as the ensemble films “The Avengers”, “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame”.
