  • no confidence motion in haryana: BJP’s Haryana govt confident of support from some JJP MLAs

BJP is confident of securing its government in Haryana, even as JJP and Congress has sought the governor’s intervention for a floor test of the Nayab Saini-led government. BJP is confident of support from several JJP MLAs.

Former BJP ally, Dushyant Chautala, has written to the governor demanding a floor test in the state assembly. In his letter, Chautala said that the recent resignations and withdrawals of support have left the ruling BJP alliance teetering on the brink of a minority status. Till a few months ago, he was deputy chief minister in the BJP-JJP alliance government in Haryana.

Similarly, Congress leader Bhupender Hooda also said he has sought time from the governor and would demand that an assembly session be called so that the Saini government would prove its majority on the floor of the House.Political temperature has risen in Haryana after three independent MLAs withdrew their support from the BJP government there. The MLAs had made the announcement in the presence of Hooda, the leader of the opposition in the assembly.AllUttar PradeshMaharashtraTamil NaduWest BengalBiharKarnatakaAndhra PradeshTelanganaKeralaMadhya PradeshRajasthanDelhiOther StatesHooda took a dig at Chautala saying that first he should ensure that all 10 MLAs of JJP are with him or not. Responding to the questions of BJP government lacking majority, Saini said “whenever the session will be called, we will win the trust vote”.”Where was Dushyant Chautala when the special session of the assembly was called? And BJP govt won majority. Earlier, he was enjoying power. Now he is out of it, so he is doing all this. Chautala has lost people’s trust,” Saini said.BJP government, which has the support of two other independents, is now two seats short of the majority mark in the 90-member House, which has a current strength of 88.

Officials of the state’s Chief Electoral Officer’s office told here on Tuesday that the counting of votes for the Marwahi Vidhasabha seat was started at 8 am today in the government Gurukul school.

According to the information received so far, Dr. KK Dhruv of Congress is ahead of his rival BJP candidate Gambhir Singh by 3,664 votes. Officials said that Dhruv has so far received 8,520 votes and Singh has received 4,856 votes. Counting of votes continues.

  • SC dismisses PIL seeking use of ballot papers in assembly, LS polls

The Supreme Court Thursday dismissed a PIL seeking use of ballot papers instead of EVMs during upcoming assembly and Lok Sabha polls.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi did not agree with the contention of NGO ‘Nyay Bhoomi’ that electronic voting machines are capable of being misused and they should not be used in the polls to ensure free and fair elections.

“Every system and machine is capable to be used and misused. Doubts will be everywhere,” the bench said, while dismissing the PIL.

  • Mamata slams Centre for delay in clearing proposal to rename West Bengal

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee slammed the Centre on Wednesday for allegedly dragging its feet in clearing a proposal to rename West Bengal to “Bangla”, a proposal unanimously passed by the state assembly in July.

Banerjee said the BJP has been changing names of historical places and institutions unilaterally “almost every day” to suit its “interests” but when it comes to Bengal, the attitude is totally different.

On July 26, the assembly passed a resolution unanimously to change the name of the state to “Bangla” in the three most-spoken languages — Bengali, Hindi and English — and sent the proposal to the Union Home Ministry.

Banerjee’s government had proposed to rename the state on three earlier occasions.

It suggested “Paschimbanga” in 2011, which was turned down by the Centre. In 2016, it proposed “Bengal” in English, “Bangla” in Bengali and “Bangal” in Hindi, which too was turned down. Finally, it proposed the name ‘Bangla’ in July this year.

“It is pending there (with the Home Ministry) for a long, long time,” Banerjee said in a statement.

“After Independence, there have been changes in the name of a few states and cities, like Orissa to Odisha, Pondicherry to Puducherry, Madras to Chennai, Bombay to Mumbai, Bangalore to Bengaluru etc, keeping in view the sentiments of the state and local language. Those are genuine,” she said.

The West Bengal Assembly had passed a resolution to change the name of the state on the basis of local sentiments related to “our mother tongue, Bangla”, she added.

“The Union Home Ministry advised us to use the name Bangla in all three languages. Accordingly, our assembly passed a unanimous resolution to change the name of the state to ‘Bangla’ in all three languages and sent it to the Union Home Ministry again,” she said.

On reservations from some quarters that Bangla would sound very similar to Bangladesh, she said names should not create a hurdle as “there is a Punjab in our neighbouring country as well as in India”.

Criticising the BJP, she said a political party with “zero strength” in the state cannot decide on changing the name of that state.

The proposal to change the name was made only after a resolution was passed unanimously by the state assembly in accordance with the constitutional obligations and federal structure, which should be respected, she said.

“The people of Bengal must get a positive response immediately,” Banerjee said.

  • BJP’s candidate list for MP polls out; Chouhan to fight from Budhni

The BJP on Friday released its first list of 177 candidates for the Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls, slashing tickets of 63 MLAs and fielding Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan from the Budhni seat, scotching speculation that he may change his constituency.

Among the 177 names announced out of the total of 230 Assembly seats, 14 are women candidates, even as 63 sitting MLAs, who have been denied tickets, replaced with new faces. The party also repeated 95 MLAs who won the election during 2013.

Chouhan would continue to file his nomination from his traditional Budhni seat.

The party also announced candidates for 28 Assembly seats in Telangana and 24 in Mizoram.

  • Yogi Adityanath to be among star campaigners

With the pride of the BJP at stake, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will be among star campaigners for the party in three Central Indian States where Assembly elections are slated for November and December.

A meeting in this connection was held at the CM’s official residence at 5, KD Marg, on Monday night at which the blueprint of Yogi’s forays into neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh was chalked out.

Sources told The Pioneer that the two Deputy Chief Ministers, Dinesh Sharma and Keshav Prasad Maurya, might also be asked to address rallies in those States. “But the focus will be on Yogi as requests have started pouring in from these poll-bound states seeking time from the UP Chief Minister,” the sources said.  Assembly elections are also slated for Telangana and Mizoram but Yogi’s electoral participation there is not clear. “The CM might also go to these two States and address rallies there. It all depends on directives from the Central leadership,” he said.

Earlier too, Yogi had been the star campaigner of the BJP and his role in Gujarat was very crucial as he was the most sought after leader after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP’s president Amit Singh. “Yogi’s saffron outfit and sanyasi look sends a loud Hindutva message which has proved beneficial for the party. Therefore, he has been sent to different States for electioneering,” a leader opined.
