    By PTI

DIPHU: A person, who was arrested on charges of raping a girl, was shot at by the police on Sunday in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district after he allegedly escaped from a health facility, where he was undergoing treatment, an officer said.

The man was arrested on May 27 and later admitted to the Diphu Medical College and Hospital as he was unwell, the police officer said.

The accused on Saturday night managed to sneak out from a bathroom of the health facility, following which a search operation was launched to nab him, Additional Superintendent of Police Prakash Sonowal said.

Representatives of several women and social organisations held a demonstration at the police station, demanding immediate arrest of the accused.

The district police intensified its operations and traced the man near the district’s border with Nagaland, the officer said, adding that he attacked a policeman there and tried to flee the spot.

When the man refused to stop even after repeated warnings, police had to fire targeting his leg, the officer said.

This was the second such incident in a week as another accused of raping a girl was injured in police firing when he allegedly tried to escape from custody in Kokrajhar.

Since the Himanta Biswa Sarma government came to power in May last year, at least 47 people have been killed and 116 injured in police actions while they allegedly tried to flee police custody or attacked men in uniform.

    By PTI

KOKRAJHAR: Three persons were awarded death sentence on Friday by a fast-track court in Assam for the rape and murder of two tribal girls last year.

The trio was convicted in the case on April 6.

Special Judge C Chaturvedi of Korajhar fast-track court sentenced them to death.

The accused were arrested on June 14 last year, days after the girls, both sisters, were found hanging from a tree in Kokrajhar.

The incident had led to a huge outcry, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ordering a probe by a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Chaturvedi, in his judgment, said that he had come to the conclusion that this case falls ”under the rarest of rare cases so far as offences under Section 120 (B) IPC (whoever is a party to a criminal conspiracy to commit an offence is punishable with death), 302 IPC (whereby whoever commits murder shall be punished with death and shall also be liable to fine) and Section 6 (punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault) are concerned”.

”In the rarest of rare cases, they be hanged by neck till their death,” the court said.

The judge further ruled that the accused would have to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh each.

He observed that the ”default sentence for non-payment of fine is not being passed since the convict has been sentenced to death”.

The fine amount, if not paid, will be recoverable under Section 421 CrPC (warrant for levy of fine) and the money would be given to the victim’s family.

The judge also directed that the proceedings of the court be submitted to Gauhati High Court as mandated by the law.

GUWAHATI: A 15-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped at a hotel here by five men, two of whom had assaulted her on an earlier occasion, too, the police said on Friday.

According to Guwahati Assistant Commissioner of Police (women unit) Bhanita Nath, the accused lived in the neighbourhood of the girl.

As per the complaint lodged by the girl’s mother, two of the five culprits, who had first sexually assaulted the girl on February 16 and shot a video of the act, allegedly threatened to leak the clip if she revealed the matter to anyone.

On February 19, however, the two men, promising to delete the video, asked her to visit them again, this time in a hotel in Adalbari, Nath said.

The teenager was then raped by five men in the hotel room, she said.

“The girl has undergone necessary medical tests and reports are awaited. In the meantime, we have launched an operation to nab the culprits,” Nath said.

A case has been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Information Technology Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, she added.
