  • Assam man beheads 55-year-old over Rs 500, walks for 25 km with severed head to surrender

    Express News Service

GUWAHATI: An Assam man beheaded a 55-year-old and then, walked for 25 km in the dead of the night with the decapitated head to surrender at a police station.

The incident occurred at Doyalpur under Rangapara police station in northern Assam’s Sonitpur district at around 10:30 pm on Monday. Doyalpur is a remote village near the Arunachal Pradesh border.

The accused, Suniram Madri (25), was arrested by the police. The victim was identified as Boila Hemram.

Inspector Deben Bora, officer in-charge of Rangapara police station, told The New Indian Express that Hemram lost his life as a result of a dispute over Rs 500. He had asked for a loan of Rs 500 from the assailant earlier in the day but the latter refused.

“Some people had won a goat after a football match and Suniram Madri was going past the house of Boila Hemram to a place where the animal was to be slaughtered. On seeing Hemram, Madri asked the victim to accompany him but he refused, saying the assailant did not help him with Rs 500, and threatened him. This probably riled the assailant and he carried out the attack,” Bora said.

He said after killing the man, the accused went home carrying the severed head. However, his act shocked and enraged his elder brother who tried to beat him up but he managed to flee.

Bora said Madri walked not less than 25 km to reach the police station at 1:30 am and surrendered with the severed head that he carried in a bag. He was carrying a machete too, Bora said. “He probably realised that he has to surrender. He did not appear to be in an inebriated state when he surrendered. We are investigating the case,” the police officer added.

  • 15-year-old ‘gang-raped’ in Assam

    By PTI

GUWAHATI: A 15-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped at a hotel here by five men, two of whom had assaulted her on an earlier occasion, too, the police said on Friday.

According to Guwahati Assistant Commissioner of Police (women unit) Bhanita Nath, the accused lived in the neighbourhood of the girl.

As per the complaint lodged by the girl’s mother, two of the five culprits, who had first sexually assaulted the girl on February 16 and shot a video of the act, allegedly threatened to leak the clip if she revealed the matter to anyone.

On February 19, however, the two men, promising to delete the video, asked her to visit them again, this time in a hotel in Adalbari, Nath said.

The teenager was then raped by five men in the hotel room, she said.

“The girl has undergone necessary medical tests and reports are awaited. In the meantime, we have launched an operation to nab the culprits,” Nath said.

A case has been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Information Technology Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, she added.

  • ‘Drug peddler’ shot at while trying to escape custody: Assam Police

    By PTI

JORHAT: A suspected drug peddler was injured after police opened fire at him while he was allegedly trying to escape from custody in Assam’s Jorhat district on Friday, a senior officer said.

The injured person was admitted to state-run Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH), where his condition is stated to be stable.

Superintendent of Police Ankur Jain said that the incident took place when the accused was being brought to Jorhat from Dhubri.

“The man got down the police vehicle on the pretext of relieving himself. However, he then attempted to flee, forcing our personnel to shoot at his leg,” the officer said.

The accused had earlier escaped from custody and Jorhat Police nabbed him from Dhubri on Thursday, he said.

A total of 32 accused have been gunned down and 58 injured while allegedly attempting to flee police custody since the second BJP government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assumed office in May.

The opposition alleges that the state police has turned “trigger happy”, but Sarma says that the law enforcers have “full operational liberty” to fight criminals under the ambit of law.

  • Minor porn addicts stone six-year-old girl to death for resisting sexual advances

    Express News Service

GUWAHATI: Two porn addicts, both minor, stoned a six-year-old girl to death for resisting sexual advances in Nagaon district of Assam.

The police arrested the duo — one aged 11 years, and the other an eight-year-old boy. Parents of one of the accused were also held.

The girl was murdered on October 18. She was found lying unconscious inside the toilet of a stone-crushing mill and rushed to a hospital but the doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Nagaon SP Anand Mishra tweeted: “Family/Social intervention & institutional guidance to the kids could have saved these 4 young lives. 1 Lost Life, 3 Lost for Life. It can happen with any one of us or anyone around us. If our upcoming generations fail on socio-moral standards, the responsibility lies greatly upon us!”

The Nagaon police said the accused were porn addicts, capable of conspiracy and gruesome execution of a dastardly crime. “It seems it’s time for introspection and social intervention,” the police said.

Sub Divisional Police Officer, Mrinmoy Das, told The New Indian Express that the victim was a next-door neighbour of the three minor boys who are cousins. He said the girl was not raped.

“One of the minors, who studies at an English medium school, is from a well-to-do family. He wanted to have a physical relationship with the victim but she resisted it. When she said she would tell her parents about his misbehaviour, he attacked her with a stone and injured her. Later, he attacked her further in the same manner along with the other 11-year-old,” Das said.

He said the eight-year-old had supported the duo in committing the crime. He also said that the parents of the boy, who wanted to have a physical relationship with the victim, knew about the incident but they hid it and tempered with evidence.

“The boy was using his father’s smartphone. The man and his wife do not know how to use it. We found pornographic materials in the phone’s browsing history…

“The father said he and his wife found the child in a compromising position once with his own elder sister. He used the phone for his online classes but got addicted to watching porn. He would show porn contents to his cousins,” Das said.

His criminal mind was active as evident from his attempt to cover up the incident. His child-like innocence was found missing, the police officer said.

He said one observation was that the boys of today, forced to use cell phones for their online classes, were attaining puberty or adulthood at a very early age.

“We will produce the trio before a court and it is likely to send them to a juvenile court. The couple has been with us for two days and we will not seek their custody. They are likely to be remanded to judicial custody,” the police officer added.

Jayanta Das, a Guwahati-based senior consultant psychiatrist, blamed the phenomenon on the advent of smartphones. Earlier, he said, the mothers would tell stories to their kids while feeding them but now they show them the device.

“This is a dangerous phenomenon. The pandemic has created a situation where the parents are compelled to hand the mobile phone over to their children for online classes,” Das said.

He said by observing the parents use the mobile phone constantly, even a one-year-old infant can imitate their actions.

“Our societal lifestyle and family pattern are disturbed nowadays. Access to porn content has become very easy. This has hugely affected our children. The roles of parents and teachers have become more important,” Das added.
