  • Ariana Grande addresses body-shaming comments, says “Healthy can look different”

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: Ariana Grande took to TikTok on Tuesday to shed light on her mental health, addressing recent comments about her body in a three-minute video.

“I don’t do this often. I don’t like it. I’m not good at it. But I just wanted to address your concerns about my body, and talk a little bit about what it means to be a person with a body and to be seen and to be paid such close attention to,” she began.

As reported by People, a US-based media company, the Grammy-winning singer added, “There are many different ways to look healthy and beautiful. And personally, for me, the body that you’ve been comparing my current body to was the unhealthiest version of my body.”

Sharing her past habits, the singer said, “I was on a lot of anti-depressants and drinking on them and eating poorly and at the lowest point of my life when I looked the way you consider my healthy, but that, in fact, wasn’t my healthy.”

Ariana felt that talking about her body would free her from inner insecurities and vulnerabilities. “Healthy can look different,” continued Grande. “The second thing is you never know what someone is going through, so even if you’re coming from a loving place or a caring place, that person probably is working on it or has a support system that they’re working on it with. You never know, so be gentle with each other and yourselves,” she added.

Grande also extended some kind words to her fans by sharing that “you’re beautiful no matter what phase you’re in.”

“Sending you guys a lot of love, and I think you’re beautiful no matter what you’re going through, no matter what weight, no matter how you like to do your makeup these days, no matter what cosmetic procedures you’ve had — or not — or anything,” expressed Grande near the end of the video. “I just think you’re beautiful and wanted to share some feelings. Have a very beautiful day, and I’m sending you a lot of love.”

  • Beyonce, Jay-Z and Grande in Oscars race as shortlists unveiled

    By AFP

Beyonce, Jay-Z and Ariana Grande are all in the running for the best original song Oscar, but French shock-fest “Titane” did not make the shortlist for best foreign film, as the Academy unveiled its annual shortlists Tuesday ahead of the formal nominations.

Pop superstar Beyonce’s ballad “Be Alive”, penned for the tennis biopic “King Richard,” about the father of Serena and Venus Williams (played by Will Smith), was on a list of 15 tracks, which will be whittled down to a final five before March’s Oscars.

She will compete against her husband Jay-Z, who produced Netflix Western “The Harder They Fall,” and teamed up with Kid Cudi for the movie’s track “Guns Go Bang.”

Grande appears in satire “Don’t Look Up,” in which her pop star character sings “Just Look Up” to implore the public to take seriously the impending threat of a comet plummeting towards Earth.

Billie Eilish’s 007 theme song “No Time To Die” also made the list.

So did “Dos Oruguitas” from Disney’s animated film “Encanto,” a song composed by “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, who only needs an Oscar to complete the coveted EGOT collection of awards — Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony.

Fifteen contenders were unveiled for the international feature film Academy Award, from among 92 eligible movies. Each country is only permitted to submit one film.

France boasts the most foreign film nominations of any country in Oscars history, but will watch from the sidelines this year after its selection, Julia Ducournau’s Palme d’Or-winning body-horror “Titane,” failed to make the cut.

The ultra-violent movie about a female serial killer who has sex with automobiles, before tricking a firefighter into believing she is his long-lost son, may have proven too controversial for Academy voters.

The shortlist includes frontrunners such as Paolo Sorrentino’s coming-of-age drama “The Hand of God” (Italy) and Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s “Drive My Car” (Japan), based on a Haruki Murakami short story.

Iran’s Asghar Farhadi — among a select group of auteurs to have won multiple foreign film Oscars previously with “A Separation” and “The Salesman” — again makes the cut with morality drama “A Hero.”

The tiny Himalayan nation of Bhutan is a step closer to its first Oscar nomination with “Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom,” a comic drama about a reluctant young teacher who is sent to work in the world’s most isolated school.

Denmark, which won the foreign film Oscar last year for “Another Round,” again has a strong contender in the form of “Flee,” which chronicles a gay Afghan refugee’s perilous journey to Europe.

The animated film was also included in the shortlist for best documentary, which was also unveiled Tuesday.

“The Rescue,” about the headline-grabbing 2018 race to save a Thai soccer team trapped in a cave, and Questlove’s “Summer of Soul,” about the huge but largely forgotten “Black Woodstock” festival that took place in 1969 Harlem, also made the cut.

The final list of Oscar nominations will be revealed on February 8, and the awards will be handed out on March 27.

  • Leonardo DiCaprio’s ‘Don’t Look Up’ is about ‘climate crisis, politicisation of science’

    By PTI

MUMBAI: Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio says he was drawn to his latest satirical sci-fi comedy “Don’t Look Up” as the film focuses on the urgency of climate crisis, a cause he has long wanted to highlight on screen.

Directed by “The Big Short” helmer Adam McKay, the movie follows two low-level astronomers, played by DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, who attempt to warn everyone about an approaching comet that will destroy Earth.

DiCaprio, who has been an active part of the global climate change movement for many years, said McKay has cleverly used the plot of a comet wiping out the earth to throw light on the larger point about climate crisis.

“Adam created this film, which was about the climate crisis but he created a sense of urgency with it by making it about a comet that’s going to hit Earth within eight months time and how science has become politicised, there’s alternative facts,” the Oscar-winning actor said during a global virtual press conference of the film.

Asked what kind of change he is looking forward to in the public perception of science and people who practice it, the 47-year-old actor said he just wants climate scientists to be taken seriously.

“I was just thankful to play a character who is solely based on so many of the people that I’ve met from the scientific community, in particular, climate scientists, who’ve been trying to communicate the urgency of this issue. And feeling like they’re subjected to the last page on the newspaper… There’s too many other things that we’re inundated with,” DiCaprio said.

For the press conference, the actor was joined by Hollywood veteran Meryl Streep, good friend-frequent collaborator Jonah Hill, Tyler Perry, Lawrence and McKay.

The film features DiCaprio as Dr Randall Mindy, who, along with Lawrence’s Dr Kate Dibiasky, goes on a giant media tour to warn mankind of the approaching comet.

The actor, best known for his work in films like “Titanic”, “Shutter Island”, “Django Unchanged” and “The Revenant”, credited McKay for crafting two distinct characters of the low-level astronomers.

“I love the way he portrayed these two different characters, one that is incredibly outspoken, like a Greta Thunberg type of character and mine that is trying to play within the system.

But I also love the way he was just incredibly truthful about how we’re so immensely distracted from the truth nowadays.

“And then, of course, COVID hit and there’s a whole new scientific argument going on there. It’s just such an important film to be a part of, at this particular time,” he added.

“Don’t Look Up” will receive a limited theatrical release on December 10, followed by a Netflix premiere on December 24.

DiCaprio, who runs a non-profit organisation devoted to promoting environmental awareness, said starring in the film was also a way to make sure he collaborates with other artistes in spreading the word about the danger mankind faces.

“Adam really cracked the code with this narrative. There are so many comparisons that we can make about the climate crisis with this storyline. As a whole, it’s probably the most important issue all of us could be talking about on a regular basis and it takes artists like this to change the narrative, to create conversation. I’m honoured to be part of it,” he added.

“Don Look Up”, produced by McKay and Kevin Messick, also features Hollywood star Cate Blanchett, Timothee Chalamet and pop star Ariana Grande among others.
