  • 10 popular Android apps that may be ‘dangerous’ to

Despite Google fixing a crucial security flaw in its Play Core library back in April 2020, many Android apps still continue to remain vulnerable as per a report by cybersecurity firm Check Point. Identified as CVE-2020-8913, this vulnerability allows attackers to inject malicious code into vulnerable applications, in order to gain access to all the same resources of the hosting application. Attackers can use the vulnerable apps to get access to sensitive data from other apps on the same device, stealing users’ private information, such as login details, passwords, financial details, and mails. While there are many apps, here are the 10 popular Android apps that may be safe to use until the app developers release an update.

To back its claims, Check Point researchers took a vulnerable version of the Google Chrome application and created a dedicated payload to grab its bookmarks. Exploiting the vulnerability, someone can grab cookies to use them as a means to Hijack an existing session with 3rd party services, like DropBox. Once a payload is “injected” into Google Chrome, the payload will have the same access as the Google Chrome app to data, such as cookies, history and bookmarks for the data, and password manager as a service. It is advisable that users update their Google Chrome app immediately.

  • China firmly opposes India’s move to ban its mobile apps

China has firmly opposed India’s move to ban more Chinese mobile applications and expressed hope that the Indian side would provide a “fair, impartial and non-discriminatory business environment” for all market players.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Chinese embassy said it opposes the Indian side’s repeated use of national security as an “excuse” to prohibit some mobile apps with a Chinese background. It added that China and India are opportunities for development to each other rather than threats.

China’s response comes a day after India banned 43 apps included many of Chinese origin. AliExpress, Alibaba Workbench, WeWork China, CamCard, and SnackVideo are among those apps banned in the latest instance.

The banned applications, which include a few dating apps, were a threat to the “sovereignty and integrity of India”, the Indian government said in a statement.

“We firmly oppose the Indian side’s repeated use of ‘national security’ as an excuse to prohibit some Mobile APPs with a Chinese background. The Chinese government has always required overseas Chinese companies to abide by international rules, operate in compliance with laws and regulations and conform to public order and good morals,” the Embassy said.

“We hope the Indian side provides a fair, impartial and non-discriminatory business environment for all market players from various countries including China, and rectify the discriminatory practices violating WTO rules,” it added.

  • Google announces new deadline for Android apps to request background location access

n February, it was revealed that existing apps that request a user’s background location would need to be approved by Google. A deadline of November 2 of this year was originally set, but that date has been pushed back, giving developers more time to seek approval.

Google revealed the new dates on its Android Developers blog. The search giant said that if your app uses background location data, you must submit a form for review and receive approval by January 8, 2021. Developers who don’t receive approval risk having their apps pulled from Google Play. Existing apps that were first published before April 16, 2020 have until March 29, 2021.

    • If your app has multiple features that use background location, choose the one that provides the most user benefit. Describe in detail why background (and not foreground) location is needed and how it is used.
    • You must include a short video that shows how users will encounter your prominent disclosure, location-based feature and enable it in-app. If your video doesn’t show this or we can’t access the link, your request won’t be approved. We recommend that you upload it to YouTube or Google Drive.
    • Remember to include a prominent in-app disclosure to explain to users what data is used and how.
    • Ensure your privacy policy is clearly labeled and includes details on location data usage.

Google’s updated policies are meant to give users more control and transparency over data access. Apps that request background location access can only do so if it’s critical to the app’s core functionality and provides clear user benefit. The company said most apps that requested background location didn’t actually need it, and removing or changing it to foreground improved device battery life.

When Android 11 was released, Google gave users more control over background location data by granting a “one-time” permission. That meant apps could only access data until the app was closed, and when the app was opened again, it would have to ask for permission again.

Google has created a number of tools that developers can refer to in order to meet the deadlines. With the year quickly coming to an end, the dates are coming up fast.
