  • Only ‘Trusted Sources’ To Power India’s 5G Roll Out; Cabinet Approves Security Framework

IN a major decision Wednesday, the Modi cabinet approved a National Security Directive on Telecom, aimed at securing the country’s 5G roll out from any hostile takeover or sabotage by an enemy by setting up an architecture to allow only trusted vendors and products to participate in the technology transition. Without naming China, the new framework aims at weeding out those products or vendors who could pose a national cyber security threat using the 5G network.

The Directive would achieve this by creating a layer of oversight through a committee headed by one of the deputy National Security Advisors. Called the National Security Committee of Telecom, it would have members from relevant departments and ministries, as also experts from the industry and academia, sources informed.

The Committee would be charged with the screening of applications of the Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) on parameters of national security as decided from time to time. The government would declare a list of Trusted Products (TPs) on telecom based on recommendations of the National Cyber Security Coordinator, and all TSPs would need to comply with the guidelines for their devices and equipment to become trusted vendors.

  • 10 popular Android apps that may be ‘dangerous’ to

Despite Google fixing a crucial security flaw in its Play Core library back in April 2020, many Android apps still continue to remain vulnerable as per a report by cybersecurity firm Check Point. Identified as CVE-2020-8913, this vulnerability allows attackers to inject malicious code into vulnerable applications, in order to gain access to all the same resources of the hosting application. Attackers can use the vulnerable apps to get access to sensitive data from other apps on the same device, stealing users’ private information, such as login details, passwords, financial details, and mails. While there are many apps, here are the 10 popular Android apps that may be safe to use until the app developers release an update.

To back its claims, Check Point researchers took a vulnerable version of the Google Chrome application and created a dedicated payload to grab its bookmarks. Exploiting the vulnerability, someone can grab cookies to use them as a means to Hijack an existing session with 3rd party services, like DropBox. Once a payload is “injected” into Google Chrome, the payload will have the same access as the Google Chrome app to data, such as cookies, history and bookmarks for the data, and password manager as a service. It is advisable that users update their Google Chrome app immediately.

  • New ‘Ghimob’ malware can spy on 153 Android mobile applications

Security researchers have discovered a new Android banking trojan that can spy and steal data from 153 Android applications Named Ghimob, the trojan is believed to have been developed by the same group behind the Astaroth (Guildma) Windows malware, according to a report published on Monday by security firm Kaspersky.

Kaspersky says the new Android trojan has been offered for download packed inside malicious Android apps on sites and servers previously used by the Astaroth (Guildama) operation.Distribution was never carried out via the official Play Store. Instead, the Ghimob group used emails or malicious sites to redirect users to websites promoting Android apps.

These apps mimicked official apps and brands, with names such as Google Defender, Google Docs, WhatsApp Updater, or Flash Update. If users were careless enough to install the apps despite all the warnings shown on their devices, the malicious apps would request access to the Accessibility service as a final step in the infection process.

If this was granted, the apps would search the infected phone for a list of 153 apps for which it would show fake login pages in an attempt to steal the user’s credentials.

Most of the targeted apps were for Brazilian banks, but in recently updated versions, Kaspersky said Ghimob also expanded its capabilities to start targeting banks in Germany (five apps), Portugal (three apps), Peru (two apps), Paraguay (two apps), Angola and Mozambique (one app per country).

Furthermore, Ghimob also added an update to target cryptocurrency exchange apps in attempts to gain access to cryptocurrency accounts, with Ghimob following a general trend in the Android malware scene that has slowly shifted to target cryptocurrency owners.
