    New Delhi: American technology company, Apple has announced a new initiative that simplifies iPhone repairs, permitting customers and third-party service providers to utilize recycled Apple parts. The company states that this updated procedure will uphold user privacy, security, and safety, while also expanding options for customers and prolonging product lifespan.

    The tech company highlighted its dedication to protect user privacy, security, and safety while broadening repair choices for customers. Apple states that by integrating recycled authentic parts, they can guarantee that these components will perform just as well and be as secure as new ones.     Previously, iPhone users encountered obstacles when trying to repair their devices with recycled parts because of a system called ‘parts pairing’. This system linked the serial number of the device to new parts available only from Apple. As a result, swapping out components like screens or cameras with recycled parts would often prompt notifications cautioning users about possible issues with features like Face ID and Touch ID.

    Although Apple received criticism for the restrictions caused by parts pairing, the company has justified its importance in upholding privacy and security standards. “At Apple, we’re always looking for new ways to deliver the best possible experience for our customers while reducing the impact we have on the planet, and a key part of that means designing products that last,” Apple’s senior vice president, John Ternus stated. 

    Besides permitting the use of authentic older parts, Apple is enhancing the system for monitoring recycled iPhone components. The company plans to include the Activation Lock feature in iPhone parts to stop stolen iPhones from being taken apart for their parts.

    Apple clarified in its blog post that if a device being repaired detects that a compatible part was taken from another device with Activation Lock or Lost Mode activated, the calibration abilities for that part will be limited.

    New Delhi: Apple, a Cupertino-based company, aims to boost local value addition from its Indian suppliers, mirroring its strategy in China. Currently, Apple’s India value stands at 11-12%, projected to rise to 15-18% according to ET. India currently contributes around 7 per cent to global iPhone sales, a figure poised to potentially reach 25 per cent by 2030.

    In China, Apple boasts the highest domestic value addition globally at 28 per cent.

    According to ET, Apple aims to transfer at least half of its current supply chain from China to India in the next three years. This shift could result in around five lakh direct employment opportunities for component manufacturers and suppliers within Apple’s ecosystem, marking a significant three-fold increase in job creation.     Meanwhile, Experts suggest that as India becomes a crucial market for exporting and locally selling Apple products, it will stimulate a thriving supplier network. Additionally, India has the potential to emerge as a significant R&D hub for software-to-silicon design. 

    “The current local value addition, which is a contribution to the dollar value of the total manufacturing and design cost in an iPhone produced in India, stands at 14% compared to 41% in China,” said Neil Shah, vice president at Counterpoint Research.

    Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, stated in February that the company is witnessing robust double-digit growth in many emerging markets, achieving records in several countries, including a December quarter milestone in India.

    New Delhi: Apple assembled USD 14 billion worth of iPhones in India last financial year, doubling production in the country in what could be seen as a diversification in manufacturing beyond China, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday.

    The Bloomberg news report quoted people familiar with the matter, declining to be named as the information isn’t public, saying that the US tech giant now makes as much as 14 per cent or about one in seven of its devices from India.

    The ramp-up in production suggests Apple is accelerating efforts to cut its longstanding reliance on China as geopolitical tensions mount, as per the report. Manufacturing in India has lately taken pick up after the government production-linked incentives for over a dozen key sectors.     In 2017, Apple started manufacturing iPhones in India. The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme by the Central government is also likely to have attracted several gadget makers, including Apple, to set shop in the country.

    The Scheme is expected to tremendously boost the electronics manufacturing landscape and establish India at the global level in the electronics sector. 

    The government had launched PLI schemes in 14 sectors which will make Indian manufacturers globally competitive, attract investments, enhance exports, integrate India into the global supply chain and reduce dependency on imports.     New Delhi: The European Union (EU) has started an investigation into big tech giants Apple, Google parent Alphabet and Meta, in its first probe under the sweeping new Digital Markets Act (DMA) tech legislation. The EU has started the investigation after the potential breaches of the newly enacted anti-trust law. 

    The suite of probes announced are the first under the EU’s Digital Markets Act law, which took effect earlier this month. 

    The DMA has categorized six major tech firms — Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta, and Microsoft — as gatekeepers, mandating their adherence to specific provisions to boost more competition in digital markets, including allowing third-party app stores.

    Apple and Alphabet (Google’s parent company) will undergo EU scrutiny regarding how they enable app developers to shift consumers to third-party app stores without charges. Adding further, the European Union will also examine changes that Google made to how its search results appear in Europe. 

    Another investigation will focus on Apple’s adherence to rules facilitating the easy removal of apps and changes to default settings on iPhones, along with how the company presents choice screens for alternative search engines and browsers.

    Meta’s ‘pay or consent’ model, requiring users to pay for data protection and ad-free experiences on Facebook and Instagram, will also be examined.

    The EU’s recent law, effective this month, mandates major tech companies to follow numerous new rules, aiming to enhance competition from smaller entities in digital advertising, online search, and app ecosystems.

    Roskin-Frazee discovered a vulnerability in Apple’s backend system called Toolbox. Working together with Keith Latteri, another researcher, they performed an escalation attack on the company’s backend. After a series of steps they managed to gain access to Toolbox.

    They even got access to an employee account of a third-party company that was helping Apple with customer support. Then, under false identities, the duo placed orders for various Apple products, manipulating the sum payable to zero dollars. This allowed them to procure iPhones, laptops, and gift cards without any cost.
