Prime Minister Narendra Modi has warmly welcomed Anutin Charnvirakul’s ascension to the role of Thailand’s Prime Minister, expressing keen interest in collaborating to fortify the India-Thailand strategic partnership. Shared on X, Modi’s message celebrates the historic and cultural synergies that bind the two nations.

‘Heartiest congratulations to Anutin Charnvirakul on being elected as Prime Minister of Thailand. I look forward to working together to further strengthen our multi-faceted Strategic Partnership,’ PM Modi wrote. He elaborated on the foundations of their relationship: a common civilizational legacy, profound cultural connections, and dynamic interpersonal relations.

Both leaders, Modi affirmed, are aligned in pursuing peace, progress, and prosperity for their citizens. Anutin’s background adds an intriguing layer to his leadership profile. Educated initially at Assumption College in Bangkok, he pursued further studies at Worcester Academy in the US before graduating with an engineering degree from Hofstra University in 1989. His MBA from Thammasat University in 1990 equipped him for a career blending technical expertise with business acumen.

This exchange underscores India’s proactive diplomacy in Southeast Asia. With Thailand as a vital ASEAN hub, opportunities abound in sectors like tourism, technology, and security cooperation. Modi’s proactive engagement sets the stage for high-level dialogues and joint ventures that could redefine bilateral relations.

As global challenges mount, from economic recovery to geopolitical tensions, the India-Thailand axis represents a beacon of stability. Modi’s congratulations are more than ceremonial; they herald a new chapter of deepened ties, benefiting businesses, communities, and governments alike.

Anutin Charnvirakul, a former businessman and political figure, has been elected as the new Prime Minister of Thailand by Thai parliamentarians. He previously served as Thailand’s Health Minister during the COVID-19 pandemic. Charnvirakul is also known as the ‘Cannabis King’ for his advocacy in decriminalizing marijuana in 2022. Charnvirakul has been a key figure in Thai politics for the past decade, and he secured victory in the lower house of parliament with 247 votes. The election took place on September 5th, with 492 active members in the Thai parliament.

Charnvirakul is the third Prime Minister chosen in Thailand this year. Over the last 17 years, the court has removed five prime ministers. Last week, the Thai court found former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra guilty of ethics violations, leading to her resignation and the subsequent vote to elect a new prime minister.

This decision marks another setback for Thailand, which has been grappling with political and economic crises during Paetongtarn’s 10-month term. Thailand’s economy relies on trade and tourism, with the United States being its largest export partner. However, a 19% US tariff has slowed down Thailand’s GDP growth.

Charnvirakul’s Bhumjaithai Party is the third-largest party in parliament. Bhumjaithai reached an agreement this week with the largest opposition party, the People’s Party, and secured their support. As part of the agreement, Charnvirakul has promised to dissolve parliament and hold general elections within four months.

The People’s Party received the most votes in the 2023 elections, but it was ousted from power due to its demands for reforms to the royal defamation law. The People’s Party will provide external support to Charnvirakul’s government.

The 58-year-old Charnvirakul, a conservative and staunch patriot, previously served as the Home Minister in Paetongtarn’s coalition government. His rise to prime minister is a setback for the Pheu Thai Party, which has dominated Thai politics for two decades under the patronage of Paetongtarn’s father, Thaksin Shinawatra. Thaksin was Prime Minister from 2001 to 2006, when he was removed from power by the military.

Thailand’s political landscape is currently experiencing significant shifts. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the young prime minister, has been removed from office by the country’s court. Shinawatra, who assumed power just a year ago, is the daughter of former Prime Minister and billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra. The court’s decision has dealt a major blow to her political career.

Since her removal, discussions have centered on who will take the reins of Thailand. Industrialist-turned-politician Anutin Charnvirakul is gaining attention. This leader, who spearheaded the legalization of medical cannabis, is considered a frontrunner in the race for prime minister.

Who is Anutin Charnvirakul?

Anutin comes from a prominent business family and wields considerable influence in politics. He is the head of the Bhumjaithai Party and served as Health Minister during the COVID-19 pandemic. He gained significant prominence when he paved the way for the legalization of medical cannabis (ganja) in Thailand.

This has earned him the nickname ‘Ganja Man’. Anutin’s Bhumjaithai Party was once a crucial part of Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s government. However, the party recently withdrew from the coalition due to disagreements over Paetongtarn’s stance on the border dispute with Cambodia.

The People’s Party as a Game Changer

Thailand’s largest opposition party, the People’s Party, has signaled its support for Anutin to become prime minister. However, this support is not unconditional. The party has stated that Anutin must dissolve parliament within four months and take steps to amend the constitution. This implies it is merely an interim deal.

Currently, he has formed a coalition of 146 seats with seven parties and smaller groups. However, the real power lies with the People’s Party. The People’s Party has made it clear that it will not join Anutin’s government. But it will provide support from its 143 MPs, which will help Anutin secure the necessary 247 votes to become prime minister.

Will Thailand’s Politics Change?

The question is whether Anutin will only be an interim prime minister for four months or if this is the beginning of his long political journey. The People’s Party has justified its support for Anutin, stating that this step is not to save any leader but to protect the country from external political pressure and weak coalition governments.
