The cricket world is reeling from news that Aaron Jones, USA’s prolific opener, stands provisionally banned amid multiple anti-corruption violations. Announced by the ICC on January 28, the suspension halts his participation right before the T20 World Cup training camp intensifies.

Detailed charges paint a troubling picture. From the Barbados T10 League to international fixtures, Jones allegedly violated CWI’s Article 2.1.1 by plotting to manipulate match elements. He is further accused of ignoring reporting duties under 2.4.2 and stonewalling anti-corruption inquiries via 2.4.4.

ICC’s playbook adds weight: failure to notify the ACU of suspicious contacts (2.4.4) and actively hindering investigations by hiding evidence (2.4.7). These breaches, if proven, could end his career prematurely.

A veteran with dozens of international caps—52 in ODIs and 48 in T20Is—Jones was gearing up in Sri Lanka for the marquee event. His absence leaves a gaping hole in USA’s top order, challenging their ambitions in the tournament they co-host.

He gets 14 days from January 28, 2026, to mount a defense. Intriguingly, the ICC labels this part of a larger probe, teasing potential charges against others involved.

As USA navigates this crisis, it spotlights vulnerabilities in associate nations’ anti-doping frameworks. The T20 World Cup, set to dazzle from February 7, now carries added intrigue. Will Jones return, or is this the end of an era? Only time and tribunals will tell, but for now, USA must adapt swiftly.

In the midst of escalating anti-corruption protests in Nepal, former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife became targets of violence on Tuesday. Videos circulating on social media depict protesters breaching Deuba’s residence in Budanilkantha, Kathmandu. The former Nepalese leader was visibly injured, with blood on his face, while his wife, Arzu Rana Deuba, also appeared to have been assaulted. The house suffered significant damage before authorities could intervene. The protests, driven by ‘Gen Z’ participants, involved widespread arson and vandalism. Party offices, residences of political figures, and government buildings were set ablaze. Protesters were also seen celebrating as they vandalized the private residence of outgoing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in Balkot, Bhaktapur, and set it on fire. President Ram Chandra Paudel’s private residence in Kathmandu was also targeted. Both the Nepalese Prime Minister and President resigned on Tuesday amidst the violent protests. Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel was also pursued through the streets of Kathmandu by protestors. The political unrest has resulted in 19 fatalities and over 300 injuries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated development projects worth 13,000 crore rupees in Bihar, including the flagging off of two trains. Addressing a public gathering, he began his speech in the Magahi language. Modi stated his satisfaction in serving the people and criticized the RJD, highlighting their alleged role in bringing ‘red terror’ to Bihar. He inaugurated his address in Gaya, expressing greetings and respect.

Regarding new legislation, PM Modi announced a law targeting corruption, applicable to both Chief Ministers and Prime Ministers. Under this law, officials would be required to vacate their positions if bail is not granted within 30 days. Modi asserted that those imprisoned would be removed from their posts, emphasizing that corrupt officials would face both imprisonment and the loss of their positions. He reiterated his commitment to serving the people, particularly in providing housing. He mentioned that over 4 million poor people have received permanent homes in the last 11 years, with 3.8 million homes constructed in Bihar alone, including 200,000 in Gaya. The Prime Minister assured that the housing scheme would continue until every poor person has a home.

He also expressed that Diwali and Chhath Puja in Bihar this year would be more festive. Modi assured those yet to benefit from the housing scheme that it would continue until everyone is housed. He referred to the region as the land of spirituality and peace, and the place where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. Modi acknowledged the rich spiritual and cultural heritage of Gaya, and appreciated the Bihar government’s decision to officially call the city Gaya Ji. He praised the state’s dual-engine government for its efforts towards Gaya Ji’s rapid development.

Modi recalled that every resolution taken on the soil of Bihar has been fulfilled. He then mentioned that after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, where innocent citizens were targeted, he vowed to eliminate terrorism from the region. He said that the world now sees the fulfillment of that pledge. Modi highlighted ‘Operation Sindoor’ as a defining moment in India’s defense policy, ensuring that terrorists would no longer escape accountability, regardless of where they hid.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced plans to introduce new legislation aimed at re-establishing the independence of the country’s anti-corruption agencies. This move comes in response to widespread protests and criticism from Western allies. The announcement follows a controversial law that allowed the Prosecutor General’s Office to intervene in the operations of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO). The initial law was enacted after a raid on NABU’s offices and the arrest of a senior employee accused of spying for Russia. The new bill, according to Zelensky, aims to provide ‘full-fledged guarantees of the independence of anti-corruption agencies’ and combat alleged Russian interference. The draft law reportedly includes mandatory lie detector tests for employees of NABU, SAPO, and related bodies. The policy shift was prompted by public demonstrations across Ukraine, with protesters voicing concerns about a perceived crackdown on anti-graft efforts. Critics have accused Zelensky of authoritarianism and attempting to consolidate power, arguing that the earlier law undermined the effectiveness of anti-corruption bodies. International figures, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, have condemned the initial move, cautioning that it could jeopardize Ukraine’s EU membership aspirations. NABU and SAPO were established after the 2014 US-backed coup in Kyiv with the intention of aligning Ukraine with Western governance norms. However, some critics have characterized these agencies as tools of external influence. Meanwhile, some Western officials have expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of Ukraine’s anti-corruption efforts, citing persistent corruption despite years of reforms.

Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, stated on Saturday that some Muslim MPs privately support the proposed Waqf Amendment Bill but are protesting due to pressure from their respective parties.

Rijiju, who was in Srinagar to meet business representatives and other stakeholders regarding the budget, clarified that the NDA’s intent behind the bill is transparent. “There is no intention to seize property from Muslims and transfer it to others. Our country functions under the law and constitution,” he emphasized. The Waqf Amendment Bill aims to streamline the management of Waqf properties, some of which are tied up in legal disputes. Rijiju explained that although India possesses the world’s largest amount of Waqf property, much of it remains unused, especially for the benefit of women and children in need.Rijiju also affirmed that both NDA allies, Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar, support the passage of the bill. He mentioned that numerous Muslim community members and women have praised the initiative, with Muslim MPs expressing their support privately, though publicly protesting due to party pressure.
Regarding Jammu & Kashmir, Rijiju emphasised the government’s focus on the region, noting that Prime Minister Modi has directed ministers to monitor progress at the grassroots level. He expressed confidence that J&K will soon emerge as one of the most prosperous and developed regions.
On the issue of recent Anti-Corruption Bureau raids involving two officials from the Srinagar Smart City Project, Rijiju made it clear that any verified act of corruption would be met with strict action. He reiterated the central government’s commitment to zero tolerance for corruption.
