  • Netflix acquires  Anna Kendrick’s Woman of the Hour

    Netflix has bought Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut film Woman of the Hour at the Toronto Film Festival. As per Deadline, the deal was closed at $11 million.

    Touted as a thriller, the film will revolve around a young woman who wins The Dating Game with a man who is a serial killer, convicted for the murder of eight women. Anna will double up as the lead actor with Daniel Zovatto playing the killer. Woman of the Hour is based on true events.

    Tony Hale and Nicolette Robinson are also part of the cast. With a script penned by Ian McDonald, Anna has backed the film along with Roy Lee JD Lifshitz and Raphael Margules under BoulderLight Pictures.

    In a statement, Anna said, “It has been my absolute honour to have TIFF as part of my career for the last 14 years. I truly can’t express how proud I am to have the world premiere of Woman of the Hour at TIFF. It is more than a dream come true.”

  • ‘A Simple Favor’ sequel  to go on floors soon

    A sequel to the 2018 black comedy A Simple Favor, starring Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick, is set to begin production later this year. 

    The film is being produced by Amazon Studios and Lionsgate film and according to People magazine, the shooting for the film will begin in Italy.

    The original film, which starred Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively and Henry Golding, was based on a book by Darcy Bell. It tells the story of Stephanie, a mommy vlogger who attempts to figure out why and how her best friend Emily goes missing while getting closer to Emily’s husband Sean.

    The film garnered critical and commercial success, earning more than USD 97 million worldwide.

    Paul Feig, who directed the original, will helm the sequel and will also produce the film under his Feigco Entertainment banner. The film is based on a script written by Jessica Sharzer. Kendrick and Lively will reprise their roles from the first movie.Apart from the lead actors, it has also been reported that most of the supporting cast from the original film will reprise their roles for the sequel.

    According to entertainment news outlet The Hollywood Reporter, the film is based on a Black List script by Ian McDonald and will present the stranger-than-fiction story of Cheryl Bradshaw, a bachelorette candidate on hit ’70s TV matchmaking show “The Dating Game”.

    In the game, Bradshaw picked the funny and handsome Bachelor Number One, Rodney Alcala.

    But her fairy-tale date takes a terrifying turn when the bachelor drops his charming facade to reveal the truth: Alcala is in fact a psychopathic serial killer.

    Kendrick, known for movies such as the “Pitch Perfect” films, “A Simple Favor” and “Up In The Air”, will take on the lead role of Bradshaw.

    The 37-year-old actor is also producing the project through her banner Let’s Go Again alongside JD Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures and Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon.

    “The Dating Game” is currently in the pre-production phase and is expected to start filming in October.

  • Adam Devine to star in ‘Pitch Perfect’ spin-off series

    LOS ANGELES: Adam Devine will reprise his role as Bumper Allen from the first two “Pitch Perfect” movies in the spin-off series set up at Peacock.

    Peacock has handed a straight-to-series order to the show, which comes from Universal Television.

    Elizabeth Banks, who starred in, produced the films and directed the second movie, will executive produce the upcoming series.

    According to Deadline, the show will follow Bumper Allen, the vocal villain who fans love to loathe, several years after viewers saw him in the films, as he moves to Germany to revive his music career when one of his songs becomes big in Berlin.

    Max Handelman will executive produce with Banks via their Brownstone Productions, along with Gold Circle Films’ Paul Brooks and Scott Neimeyer as well as Devine and Megan Amram.

    The “Pitch Perfect” films series was launched in 2012 and followed Barden University’s all-women a cappella group, The Barden Bellas, as they competed against another a cappella group from their college to win Nationals.

    Anna Kendrick, Anna Camp and Rebel Wilson were among the stars of the franchise.

    Two sequels were released in 2015 and 2017.

    LOS ANGELES: Actress Anna Kendrick feels she may have saved lives by staying home and sticking to lockdown rules.

    “It’s a question we’ve all been dealing with this year, what are we willing to sacrifice for the sake of our communities. I know we’re all kind of going insane, but I think a lot of people are going to come out of this going, ‘Damn, I didn’t accomplish anything, a whole year just stolen from me. I didn’t achieve anything.’ You have to refrain that, I accomplished the most important thing there is which is I may have saved lives by sitting on my butt inside,” Kendrick said, according to a report in femalefirst.co.uk.

    The 35-year-old actress had a “sense” at the beginning of the pandemic that it was going to go on for a longer time than was being said.

    “I feel like at the beginning of quarantine I was just one of the people that had the sense early on that it was going to be a lot longer than they were telling us. I think in the first two weeks I was like, ‘I’m just going to put the five pounds on now.’ What would I try and put it on slowly, let’s just get there and sit at this level and then future me will have to deal with the consequences,” she said on “The Jess Cagle Podcast”.

    The actress added that she felt like snacking was the only thing one could do, at the beginning of lockdown.
