  • Battle for Uttar Pradesh: Aligarh Muslim University panel puts out ‘charter’ for political parties

    By IANS

ALIGARH: The coordination committee of Uttar Pradesh state executive body of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has passed a 15-point resolution as a charter of ‘Muslim issues’ and sought its inclusion in the election manifesto of political parties.

The committee has also sought an assurance of the implementation of the issues.

In the resolution passed by the committee, comprising over 100 members including teaching, non-teaching staff, students and alumni, it demanded speedy investigation and release of innocent persons framed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and National Security Act.

It also demanded compensation and rehabilitation of victims who were falsely implicated by security agencies and subjected to prolonged incarceration and severe torture, but found innocent and acquitted by courts of law.

The resolution further demanded enactment of comprehensive anti-communal and anti-hate crime law with the provision of ‘stringent punishment and speedy trial and formation of a task force having adequate representation of stakeholders for vigilance of harassment and atrocities on minorities’.

The committee said the election is crucial for the community, having been subjected to “systematic harassment by the communally-biased ruling dispensation and disappointed by the silence of all secular parties which had enjoyed power due to their electoral support”.

  • AMU scholar claims his PhD degree was revoked for praising PM Modi, varsity denies charges

    Express News Service

LUCKNOW: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is yet again in news as one of its scholars has alleged that he was being targeted and being denied a PhD degree for “praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the media.”

However, the AMU administration has denied the allegation saying that the student was issued a degree in the wrong subject inadvertently and no politics was involved in the matter.

While seeking justice, Danish Rahim has not only moved High Court but has also written letters to UP CM Yogi Adityanath and PM Modi for his urgent intervention in the issue.

Rahim, in his letter to the PM, claimed that the AMU administration had asked him to return the PhD degree in linguistic so that he could be issued another in Language in Advertising and Marketing (LAM) course instead. “It’s happening to me because I praised PM,” said the scholar adding that he was reprimanded by the chairman of the Department of Linguistics for praising PM Modi.

The issue dates back to December 22, 2020, when Rahim had purportedly spoken to a news channel after the Prime Minister’s virtual address on the 200th foundation day of the University. “After that, the chairman of the department of linguistics called me and warned me not to praise PM in public as this is against our culture,” Rahim said in his letter to Modi.

Rahim claimed that he was asked to refrain from giving such statements which were against the university culture. “This infers that he associates you (PM Modi) with a right-wing group and hardliner politician, which in my view, is merely a myth,” he says in the letter to the PM.

He further added that a notice had been issued asking him to deposit his PhD degree back to the university. “I used my five years of hard work to get this degree. How can I return my degree that too for praising the PM of 138 crore Indians? If AMU cancels my PhD, my whole career will be at stake,” he wrote in the letter.

Rahim also contended that the university was trying to change his degree to one that was “not approved anywhere at the PhD level”.

The AMU administration has denied all the allegations. The spokesperson of the university Prof Shafey Kidway said: “The allegations are totally baseless. He (Danish Rahim) did his MA & PhD in LAMM (Language of Advertising & Marketing) course at the Department of Linguistics, which also offers a PhD degree in linguistics. Since he did his MA in LAM, he should get PhD degree in LAM.”

He added that the administrative decision was not influenced by politics. “By mistake, he was given PhD degree in linguistics. The mistake will be rectified… This incident has nothing to do with politics,” Prof Kidway said. The AMU administration, in a notice issued to Danish Rahim, stated: “It has been brought to notice that you were admitted to the PhD programme in LAMM under the Department of Linguistics in the academic session 2016-2017. As reported by your Supervisor and Chairman of the Department, your work throughout the research was on LAMM itself. However, at the time of submission of the thesis, and its subsequent evaluation and viva-voce, the same was inadvertently considered as  PhD in linguistics instead of PhD in LAMM under the department of linguistics.”

The university had asked Danish Rahim to return the ‘incorrect degree’ for replacement within a week of the issuance of the notice. “The whole matter was examined and put up before the vice-chancellor who has ordered that you deposit the incorrect PhD degree already issued to you in linguistics so that the correct PhD degree in LAMM be issued to you,” the varsity said in the notice.

  • New university in Aligarh to be named after Jat king Mahendra Pratap Singh

    Express News Service

LUCKNOW: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to sound BJP’s poll bugle from Aligarh while visiting the to lay the foundation stone of a state university named after Jat Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh on Tuesday.

PM Modi’s visit is being seen as a move by the ruling BJP to placate the sulking Jat community of western UP owing to the promulgation of three contentious farm laws.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced the setting up of the university in the name of the Raja, who had donated land for the establishment of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). The new university will come up on 92.27 acres of land in Lodha village in Aligarh.

The CM had made the announcement two years back in 2019 while he was campaigning for by-elections for assembly segments of Tundla and Iglas in western UP.

Raja Mahendra Pratap’s great-grandson Charat Pratap Singh expressed satisfaction over the move. In fact, Charat Pratap had earlier served a notice on AMU over the expiry of the lease of land donated by the Hathras royal for the prestigious university.

On the other, the AMU administration has also welcomed the state government decision of setting up a state university named after Raja Mahendra Pratap saying it was a moment of pride for AMU as the Raja was its alumnus.

Raja Mahendra Singh became a student of the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College in 1895, which was later renamed the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in 1920.

He had fought election against BJP stalwart Atal Bihari Vajpayee from the Mathura constituency and had defeated him in 1957. While Singh was an independent candidate, Vajpayee was the candidate for the Bharatiya Jan Sangh.

However, preparations for the mega event were underway. A grand stage is being erected and seating arrangements for approximately one lakh people are being made.

It is believed that the BJP will sound the poll bugle in the state through this mega event. Modi will not only take part in the foundation stone laying ceremony but will also address a huge public meeting. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is camping in Aligarh to take stock of the preparations.

A huge pandal has been set up in an area of three lakh square meters with seating arrangements for approximately one lakh people. Also, in order to save people from the vagaries of weather, arrangements for AC and fans have also been made. The SPG has taken the entire pandal under its security cover. The BJP is not leaving any stone unturned to make the PM’s visit a success.

In the wake of the impact of Muzaffarnagar Kisan Mahapanchayat, PM Modi’s visit to Aligarh assumes more importance. He is likely to reach out to the farmers and Jat voters with his public meeting.

    By PTI
ALIGARH: The Aligarh administration has banned AMU student leader Arif Khan Tyagi from the district for six months terming him a threat to peace in the city, a year after he was booked under different charges during the anti-CAA protests on the campus.

Aligarh Muslim University spokesman Professor Shafay Kidwai told PTI the externment order pertained to the protests on the campus against the Citizenship Amendment Act which began on December 15, 2019.

The externment order was issued to the final-year post graduate student by the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) City Rakesh Kumar Maalpani last week under the Uttar Pradesh Control of Goondas Act.

Arif received it two days back.

The order stated that Arif was a threat to the peace of the city and his presence posed a danger to its peace-loving residents.

Arif has had more than half a dozen cases registered against him during the two months of anti-CAA protest on the campus in December 2019 and January 2020.

After he was served the order, Arif told mediapersons that all the cases against him pertained to protests on the campus.

He said all citizens whether farmers, trade union members or students have a right to peaceful protest.

The university had to announce an extended winter break following the clashes.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday raised slogans against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for not giving tickets to Muslims during the elections and accused the BJP of using a Muslim leader to topple his government.

Gehlot said, “The BJP does not give tickets to Muslims during elections, but they are used to topple the government.” The Congress leader on Tuesday criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address at the centenary celebrations of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

“I have seen how the Prime Minister had a sweet talk at the AMU. He talked about secularism and many good things. But, does he practice? There is a difference in his speech and action, ”Gehlot said, accusing the BJP of not giving tickets to people belonging to minority communities.

Do they (BJP) give tickets to Muslims? Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and other states have so many seats, but they do not give tickets to Muslims. There is now a budding Zafar Islam which the BJP uses as a tool to topple the governments of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, ”claimed Gehlot.
