  • ‘Don’t believe PM behind misuse of CBI, ED’: Mamata as resolution against agencies’ ‘excesses’ passed

    By PTI

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said she doesn’t believe that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is behind the alleged excesses of central agencies in the state. She instead blamed a section of the BJP leaders for misusing them to serve their interests, adding that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) now reports to the Union Home Ministry, controlled by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Banerjee, who was speaking on a resolution in the Assembly against the ‘excesses’ of the central probe agencies, urged the Prime Minister to ensure that the agenda of the union government and the interests of his party do not get mixed up.

The BJP opposed the resolution which was later passed by the Assembly.

“The present union government is behaving in a dictatorial way. This resolution is not against anyone in particular, but against the biased functioning of the central agencies,” Banerjee, also the Trinamool Congress supremo, said.

“Businessmen are leaving the country and running away. They are running away because of fear and misuse of ED (Enforcement Directorate) and the CBI. I believe Modi hasn’t done this,” she told the assembly during a debate before the resolution.

“Many of you don’t know that the CBI doesn’t report to the PMO (Prime Minister’s Office) anymore. It reports to the Home Ministry. Some BJP leaders are conspiring and they go to Nizam Palace often,” the Chief Minister added.

  • ‘Congress can only practice vote bank, appeasement politics’: Shah, Irani hit out at Rahul

    By PTI

JAIPUR: Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday targeted Rahul Gandhi over the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, saying the Congress leader had once said India is not a nation and is now out to “unite” the country wearing a “foreign-make” T-shirt.

Addressing the Rajasthan BJP’s booth functionaries, he also hit out at the state government over the murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal by Muslim extremists and the Karauli violence and alleged the Congress can only practice politics of vote bank and appeasement.

Taking aim at Gandhi, he said, “I want to remind Rahul baba and other Congress members about his speech given in Parliament.

Rahul baba had said India is not a nation.

Rahul baba, in which book have you read this? This is the nation for which lakhs and lakhs of people have sacrificed their lives.”

“The one who said India is not a nation is now on a yatra to unite India wearing a foreign T-shirt,” he said, referring to the BJP’s swipe at the Congress leader for wearing a Burberry T-shirt reportedly costing over Rs 41,000.

Gandhi is out to “connect” Bharat but he needs to study Indian history first, Shah said.

He claimed that Congress cannot work for development.

“It can only work for appeasement and vote bank politics.”

The Congress, he said, will be left with nothing after the BJP forms government in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, the only two states where it is in power on its own.

Union Minister Smriti Irani on Saturday slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his party’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ questioning him on who has harmed the unity of India that required the opposition party to take out such a campaign.

Making an indirect reference to Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar, Irani also took a dig at Gandhi for being in the company of people who allegedly chanted “anti-India” slogans.

“Rahul Gandhi is on the way to unite India but he should answer first who dared to break India. You make a person a member of your party who had shouted the slogan ‘Bharat Tere Tukde Honge, Insha Allah’,” Irani said at Doddaballapura in Bengaluru.

She was addressing the gathering at the Bharatiya Janata Party’s ‘Jana Spandana’ programme celebrating the ruling party’s three years in office in Karnataka.

Irani expressed her shock over Gandhi’s remark in Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu that the fight is now against the structure of Indian state and the opposition.

“With all seriousness, I am making this charge of sedition. I am shocked at Rahul Gandhi’s statement that he is fighting against the Indian state. You have waged a war against India. I am shocked by your hunger for power,” Irani, who represents Amethi Lok Sabha constituency, said.

The Union Minister for Woman and Child Welfare charged that during Congress rule in Maharashtra a terrorist’s grave was beautified with marble tiles in Mumbai and that attacker was responsible for the killing of around 250 people.

Irani also alleged that when the Centre under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was fighting against COVID-19 pandemic and succeeded in developing an indigenous vaccine, the Congress was spreading lies asking people not to use it.

She also slammed the ‘sycophants of Gandhi family’ for using derogatory remarks against President Droupadi Murmu, the first tribal person to hold the highest post in India.

The Union minister charged that the Congress could not “digest” the statue of iconic freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose being inaugurated at ‘Kartavya Path’ in New Delhi as the party did not issue any statement favouring the step.

  • Mission 2024: Shah, Nadda meet BJP leaders to discuss roadmap for 144 ‘weak’ LS seats

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: BJP chief JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a brainstorming session on Tuesday with key party leaders tasked with boosting its prospects in 144 Lok Sabha seats, considered difficult for it, in the 2024 polls.

Over 25 Union ministers, including Bhupender Yadav, Giriraj Singh, Smriti Irani, Parshottam Rupala and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, were among those who attended the meeting with Nadda and Shah.

Sources said reports were presented about the work undertaken by various ministers, who have been assigned three to four such Lok Sabha seats, besides other leaders.

The party has been working to amp up its booth-level presence and reach out to various communities with an eye on the beneficiaries of several central government schemes.

Party leaders said they will continue to work on these lines in addition to the directives made by the leadership.

Most of these 144 constituencies include those the party had lost in the 2019 polls, but a few winning seats are also part of the list due to difficult demographic and regional factors, the sources said.

The BJP won 303 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The party has divided the 144 seats into clusters and appointed one Union minister as their in-charge.

Another set of ministers was sent to assess the political situation by visiting all assembly segments within these constituencies, including in the states of West Bengal, Telangana, Maharashtra, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.

The sources said the ministers have visited most of these constituencies and gathered electorally crucial details.

The ministers have done a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis of the BJP’s position in these constituencies and identified steps to be taken to ensure its victory in the 2024 elections, the sources said.

The party has also drawn a detailed blueprint on these constituencies which includes information on religion, caste, geography, the inclination of voters and the reasons behind it, they added.

  • Amit Shah calls for more growth in Left Wing Extremism hit areas

    By Express News Service

BHOPAL: While maintaining that incidents of violence triggered by Left Wing Extremism (LWE) have come down dramatically since the Narendra Modi government came to power in the country, the union home minister Amit Shah called upon the states to give top priority to development schemes in naxal affected areas and aim for full results of those schemes.

“More the development in naxal affected areas, the less will be the recruitment of naxalites and the sources of mobilization of the LWE too will be exhausted,” Shah said while chairing the 23rd meeting of four states-strong Central Zonal Council in Bhopal on Monday.

While the MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami were present physically at the meeting, UP CM Yogi Adityanath and Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel joined the meeting through via virtual mode as they couldn’t land in Bhopal owing to unprecedented rains.

“When the LWE violence was at its peak in 2009, the number of incidents were 2,258, which decreased to 509 in 2021. In 2009, around 1,005 people died in militant violence, while in 2021, 147 people were killed. There has also been a decrease in LWE violence at police stations during this period, from 96 such incidents in 2009 it has come down to 46 in 2021.”

Shah said the centre is further strengthening security forces in LWE-affected areas and filling gaps in security, under which 40 new security camps have been opened in the last three years and 15 more are to be opened. It is a great achievement but still, the centre along with states are committed to fully eliminating the LEW problem.

“The government has opened about 5,000 post offices and more than 1200 bank branches in the last three years in LWE-affected areas. Also, to speed up the telecom services, more than 2,300 mobile towers are being installed in the first phase and installation of 2,500 mobile towers in the second phase is going on.”

While maintaining that the four states forming the Central Zonal Council were important for their geographical location, contribution to GDP and development of the country, Shah said, earlier these states were considered as BIMARU States, but now they are moving out of it and are on the path of development.

“The four states are major centers of foodgrain production and have taken PM Modi’s concept of Team India to the ground level. PM Modi has always worked to strengthen the spirit of cooperative federalism. In the last 8 years he has kept the concept of ‘Team India’ before the nation and made it possible. Frequency of meetings of the Zonal Council have increased. Increase in the number of meetings despite the Covid-19, emphasize the concept of PM’s Team India.”

While underlining that there has been a 27 percent increase in resolving issues in the zonal council meetings since 2019, Shah said although the role of the regional council meetings is advisory, but on the basis of the experience of three years as home minister, he can say that by giving importance to the meetings of the Council and its Standing Committee, many issues have been addressed.

“30 issues were discussed in the last meeting of the Central Zonal Council, out of which 26 issues have been resolved, while in the 14th meeting of the Standing Committee held on January 17, 2022, out of  54 issues,  36 have already been resolved. A total of 18 issues were discussed in today’s meeting, out of which 15 were resolved, which is a great achievement,” Shah said.

Shah also asked the CMs and chief secretaries of the four states to regularly monitor the issues raised in the council meeting monthly to ensure their expeditious resolution.

The meeting discussed the significant progress made in expansion of banking facilities within 5 kms of all villages as envisioned by PM Modi. The meeting also discussed the seamless integration of the Police Help Line No. 112 with the Women Help Line No. – 181 and Child Help Line No. – 1098 and through this and shifting the cases related to women to ‘Sakhi -One Stop Center’ on a real-time basis.

Issues raised by the four states at the meeting

Several issues were raised at the meeting by the states, including declaring Indore, Bhopal and Raipur airports as international airports, subjects related to food grains, storage, speedy investigation of sexual offences and rape cases against women and children and increasing the central share for police modernization.

Other issues, included amendment in eligibility provisions for National Social Assistance (Old Age/Disabled Pension etc.) programmes, fixation of MSP for Kondo and Kutki crops, inclusion of lac cultivation in crop insurance scheme and Kisan Credit Card, increase in incentive amount for construction of toilets under Swachh Bharat Mission and provision of subsidy for vermicompost on the lines of chemical fertilisers.

The MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan placed key points for deliberation in front of the Council, including directing banks for easy availability of credit to the beneficiaries under the Swamitva Yojana.

“Kisan Credit Cards are being given to fish farmers and livestock farmers in the state at zero percent interest rate. Banks are not taking interest in accepting KCC,” Chouhan said while seeking issuance of guidelines to the banks from the central government.

“There is a need to make a policy regarding returning such land allotted to Central Undertakings and Defence Establishments in the state to the State Government which they are not using.”

“Madhya Pradesh has degraded forests covering an area of 36 lakh square km. Keeping this area of forests in view, the rules regarding compensatory afforestation should be relaxed, so that the work of compensatory afforestation can be made possible in the state against the plans of other states,” Chouhan said.

The Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami requested to start a campaign to connect the seasonal rivers of Uttarakhand with glacier-based rivers. He expressed the need to provide support for making arrangements for large number of pilgrims coming to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri, Gangotri pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand and to develop all-weather road in the border area with China and to boost mobile network and connectivity in the villages of mountainous region.

His UP counterpart Yogi Adityanath said that the spirit of cooperative federalism has proved helpful in Corona management. He stressed the need for coordination at the inter-state level on issues related to cow-smuggling. Along with this, he also stressed the need for joint efforts for effective control of lumpy disease in cattle.

Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel along with discussing the topics related to Naxal affected districts, proposed to provide more time for completion of work in Bastar division in Pradhan Mantri Sadak Yojna, give international airport status to Raipur Airport, set up solar plants in aspirational districts and establish a plant by Indian Oil to make ethanol from paddy straw in Chhattisgarh.

  • Congress’s protest in black clothes message against Ayodhya Ram temple: Shah

NEW DELHI: Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday linked Congress leaders’ protest in black clothes over the issues of price rise and unemployment to the party’s “appeasement” politics to convey its opposition to the Ram temple foundation laying by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this day in 2020.

Speaking to reporters at Parliament house complex, Shah said everybody saw protests from Congress leaders of late in regular clothes they wore but they especially chose black clothes for Friday’s agitation as Modi had peacefully resolved an over 550-year dispute involving the Ram Janmbhoomi in Ayodhya and performed its ‘shilanyas’ on this day.

The construction of the temple, central to the faith of crores of people, is now in full swing, he noted.

The issues of ED action and price rise are only excuses, Shah claimed, adding that the Congress has chosen to express its opposition to the foundation-laying ceremony and the ongoing construction of the temple by protesting in black clothes.

The Congress hit back saying only a “sick mind” can produce such bogus arguments and give a malicious twist to the protests.

“Home Minister has made a desperate attempt to divert, distract, polarise and give a malicious twist to today’s democratic protests of @INCIndia against price rise, unemployment & GST. It’s only a sick mind which can produce such bogus arguments. Clearly the protests have hit home!” party general secretary Jairam Ramesh tweeted.

Shah claimed that as the Congress cannot dare speak openly against the issue, it has given a hidden message of its stand against the temple’s foundation-stone laying as well as construction.

“I clearly believe that the Congress has chosen August 5 for its strong protests in black clothes to show its opposition over the temple issue,” he said.

The real anguish of the Congress is the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, and this is why it undertakes some protest on this day every year, Shah said.

With the Congress and protesting against the Enforcement Directorate action against its top leaders in the National Herald case, he said everyone should respect the legal system and follow and cooperate with judicial process.

The home minister said the Congress is not willing to drop its “appeasement politics” despite facing so many poll defeats.

He noted that the Congress had been protesting on the issues like the Enforcement Directorate action against its leaders and price rise since Parliament’s monsoon session last month.

What was so special today, he asked, adding that there was no ED action on Friday.

“It was on this day Modi laid the foundation stone for the temple at Ram Janmbhoomi which is the centre of faith of crores of people. The dispute had remained unresolved for over 550 years, and the Congress which was in power for most of time since independence did nothing to resolve it. Modi worked to find a solution peacefully and laid the temple’s foundations stone. It is that sacred day today,” Shah said.

The politics of appeasement has harmed the country a lot since independence and all parties should leave it, he said.

Wearing black clothes, Congress leaders hit the streets to protest against price rise and unemployment with a host of them, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, being detained by police for nearly six hours.

  • Inflation a global concern, not limited to India: Amit Shah

    By Express News Service

BENGALURU: Union Minister for Home Affairs and Cooperation Amit Shah on Thursday said inflation in the country was due to global situation. The minister’s statement comes in the wake of increasing attacks on the BJPled Central government over rising inflation.

Addressing the third edition of ‘Sankalp Se Siddhi’ conference organised by the Ministry of Culture and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Bengaluru, Shah said there has been a lot of discussion on the value of rupee and also inflation, but one needs to look at the currency value of Europe, Japan, Britain, Brazil and China.

He said that in the United States, inflation rate was 2.8 per cent which is now 9.8 per cent, in Turkey it is 73.5 per cent and in Brazil it is 12.3 per cent, whereas in India it is 7.1 per cent. India’s GDP growth is 7.4 per cent as against the US’ 2.3 per cent, Germany’s 1.2 per cent and China’s 3.3 per cent, which shows that the government’s policies and implementation are in the right direction, he claimed.

Amit Shah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given an all-inclusive government in the last eight years. “Since 2014, PM Modi has given ‘Sarva Sparshi, Sarva Samaveshi’ governance to the country. With our Atmanirbar Bharat and Make-in-India initiatives which have laid the foundation for growth for the next 25 years, we can say that no one can take India lightly anymore,” he said.

The government is giving free gas cylinder, power, houses and water to people who were struggling and they are now able to buy goods contributing to India’s GDP growth, he said.

‘Our economy 1st to get out of pandemic effect’

Shah said the Covid-19 induced lockdown impacted not only India but also the global economy. While other countries printed more currency notes, announced big packages, India adopted a different policy. “We encouraged an indigenously-developed vaccine and focussed on policies.

Economists worldwide praised Indian economy as it was the first to come out of the pandemic effect,” he said. Slamming the previous UPA government, Shah said before 2014, the prime minister was not considered as PM, but his cabinet ministers were acting as prime minister. He added that the Centre is now focused on development.

  • CAA will be implemented after Covid-19 vaccine drive is over, says Amit Shah

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: BJP leader from West Bengal Suvendu Adhikari Tuesday urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to implement the citizenship law CAA at the earliest, with the latter assuring him that rules regarding it will be framed after the Covid precaution dose vaccination exercise is over.

The framing of rules for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act will pave the way for its implementation.

Passed by Parliament in December 2019, the Act is yet to be rolled out due to the absence of rules.

The government has cited the outbreak of pandemic for not framing them so far.

Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the state assembly, told reporters after meeting Shah that he also handed him a list of nearly 100 Trinamool Congress leaders allegedly involved in the recruitment scam in which former West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee has been arrested.

The CAA was passed by Parliament on December 11, 2019, and the Act was notified within 24 hours on December 12.

In May, while addressing a rally in Bengal, Shah had said that the law would be implemented once the Covid pandemic ends.

There is a view that the government is treading cautiously on the matter after the Act drew saw protests in different parts of the country.

It seeks to grant citizenship to persecuted minorities of neighbouring countries, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, who had come to India by December 31, 2014.

Speaking to reporters, West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumder also hit out at TMC leader and state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that without indications from her the recruitment scam could not have happened.

“It is an organised crime. There was a ‘cut money food chain’ and some people would be based in every district to pick money and channel it through the party (TMC) organisation,” he alleged.

Adhikari said careers of around 80-90 lakh teacher job aspirants were ruined by the scam. They have remained unemployed due to this, he said.
