  • MP: FIR against man who posed as Amit Shah’s relative at Indore airport

    By PTI
INDORE: Police on Thursday registered a First Information Report (FIR) against a man who posed as a relative of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and tricked the city-based international airport’s management to avail VIP facilities, an official said. The accused hails from Maharashtra and a search has been launched to arrest him, he said.

“On a complaint of an officer of the Devi Ahilyabai Holkar International Airport, we have registered a case of cheating against a man named Puneet Shah along with other sections of the Indian Penal Code,” Aerodrome police station inspector Rahul Sharma said.

“The accusation against Puneet Shah is that he claimed to be a relative of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and used that position to assert himself on the airport management and availed access to VIP lounge, vehicles and other facilities,” he said.

It appears the man had been availing the VIP facilities at the airport since the last five to seven months, the police officer said.

After the airport management grew suspicious, it discreetly collected information about the man and found his claim to be false, he said.

On getting to know about his fraud, the management lodged the complaint, Sharma said, adding further probe was on.

  • Assam-Mizoram border violence: Veerappa Moily slams Home Ministry’s ‘failure’

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader M Veerappa Moily on Wednesday attacked the Centre over the violence at the Assam-Mizoram border, saying that the incident demonstrated the “failure” of the Union Home Ministry and central para-military forces should have been deployed.

The former Union minister said if states resort to deploying their own police forces to resolve the border disputes, the internal security of the country will be jeopardised.

Seven people were killed and 50 others, including an SP, injured in an exchange of fire between the police forces of Assam and Mizoram along their inter-state border.

In a statement, Moily said the nation is shocked to witness the clash between the police forces of Assam and Mizoram.

The episode of violence is a clear case of failure of constitutional machinery. This demonstrates the failure of the union Home Ministry which failed to de-escalate the tensions. The central para-military forces should have been deployed at the instance of the Home Ministry,” he said.

Moily said “laxity” on the part of the home ministry, particularly Home Minister Amit Shah, is a sad reflection of the failure to resolve interstate conflicts.

It is quite surprising that both the states are ruled by BJP and its allies, he said.

Noting that the UPA-1 had constituted the second Administrative Reforms Commission under his chairmanship and it submitted its 7th Report titled ‘Capacity Building for Conflict Resolution’, Moily said one of the key recommendations of the said report is on the North Eastern Policy Academy (NEPA) and also deployment of police personnel from the region to Central Police Organisations.

The government of India should ensure that all the recommendations of the 7th Report of the second Administrative Reforms Commission should be implemented, he said.

“The present scuffle should not be allowed to escalate particularly in the sensitive Northeastern states.

If states resort to taking recourse on their own and deploy their own police forces to resolve the border disputes, the internal security of the country will be jeopardised,” he said.

“It is unfortunate that both Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) and Home Minister (Amit Shah) have not taken the episode as an ‘alert signal’ to nip this case in the bud,” Moily said.

  • Assam-Mizoram clash: ‘All eyes on Amit Shah who visited northeast few days back,’ says Derek O’Brien

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: Attacking the central government over the border clashes between Assam and Mizoram, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O’Brien on Tuesday said all eyes are on the Union Home Minister Amit Shah who was in the northeast a few days ago.

“All eyes on the Home Minister, who was in the North-east a few days ago. His incompetence being exposed one day at a time,” tweeted O’Brien.

He also retweeted TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee’s tweet targeting the Bharatiya Janta Party over the issue.

“Shocked and Stunned to hear about the ruthless violence that has transpired at the Assam-Mizoram Border. My condolences to the bereaved families. Such unremitting incidents under BJPs watch have invited the death of democracy in our nation. INDIA DESERVES BETTER,” tweeted Banerjee.

The border clash between the two states claimed five lives while many police personnel and a few locals have also been injured in the clashes, said reports.

In view of border tensions with Mizoram, the Assam government on Monday urged the neighbouring state to restrain its “people and Police personnel” from indulging in “wanton violence” and work towards restoring peace.

“It is with a heavy heart that we are constrained to note that what is being termed by the Mizoram side as an intrusion and aggression by Assam has left 5 Assam Police personnel confirmed dead (6 as per initial reports, which is being confirmed) and more than 50 injured, including SP Cachar Vaibhav Nimbalkar, who has a bullet embedded in his leg and is in the ICU,” said the Assam government.

  • Home minister has ‘failed’ country: Rahul Gandhi on Assam-Mizoram border violence

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday attacked Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the violence at the Assam-Mizoram border, alleging that he has “failed” the country by “sowing hatred and distrust” into the lives of people and India is now reaping its “dreadful consequences”.

According to officials, at least five Assam Police personnel were killed while defending the “constitutional boundary” of the state with Mizoram and more than 60 people injured, including an SP, as the festering border dispute between the two northeastern states erupted into a bloody conflict on Monday.

“Heartfelt condolences to the families of those who’ve been killed. I hope the injured recover soon,” Gandhi tweeted, tagging a purported video of the violence.

“HM has failed the country yet again by sowing hatred and distrust into the lives of people. India is now reaping its dreadful consequences,” the former Congress chief said.

In a statement on Monday, the Assam government alleged that the Mizoram Police opened fire on its officials and civilians from two dominating high features with automatic weapons, including light machine guns (LMGs).

However, Mizoram Home Minister Lalchamliana claimed that the state police responded “spontaneously by firing back” at Assam Police after its 200 personnel forcibly crossed a duty post manned by CRPF personnel and indulged in arson and firing and assaulted unarmed people.

Later, Shah spoke to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Mizoram counterpart Zoramthanga and urged them to ensure peace along the disputed border and find an amicable settlement.

Assam’s Barak Valley districts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi share a 164-km border with Mizoram’s three districts of Aizawl, Kolasib and Mamit.

Following a territorial dispute, there were clashes along the inter-state border in August 2020 and February this year.
