  • Amit Mishra recounts battle against COVID-19, says Delhi Capitals need to start afresh

    By PTI

DUBAI: Leg-spinner Amit Mishra is glad that he is back to full fitness after a rather slow recovery from COVID-19 that pretty much cut him off from the outside world.

The Delhi Capitals tweaker is now looking forward to the IPL resuming here on September 19.

He was among the infected people in the IPL-bio bubble, forcing the BCCI to suspend the event in May.

“After the IPL was suspended in May, I focussed on my recovery from Covid-19. According to the advice given to me by the doctors, I improved my fitness slowly and steadily,” he said in a team release.

“It was difficult for me during the recovery phase, but I am happy that I am here for the second half of the season. I trained on my own and didn’t go close to anybody after recovery.

“I got some gym equipment such as treadmill and set them up at my home as well because I didn’t want to train in a public gym,” he said.

Delhi Capitals had a good run in the first half of the tournament, recording 6 wins in 8 matches. However, Mishra feels that all teams will have to start afresh when the season resumes.

“We are at the top of the table right now, but we have to start afresh. We have to set our strategies again. I think every team has an equal chance of doing well now since we are all re-starting the tournament.

“We are playing the second half of the IPL in a different country, so we have to devise our strategies according to the conditions here in the UAE.”

The leg-spinner added that he will try to build on the momentum they had in the first half of the season.

“We have been doing well in the last two seasons and the performances have come because of a collective effort. From coaches to selectors to players, everyone should be credited for Delhi Capitals’ progress as a team in the last few years,” said the 38-year-old.

Delhi Capitals take on Sunrisers Hyderabad on September 22.

  • Varun Chakravarthy to Sandeep Warrier to Amit Mishra – How the virus travelled

From Varun Chakravarthy to Sandeep Warrier to Amit Mishra, the dreaded Covid-19 virus slithered from one camp into another as BCCI’s protocols on social distancing saw small but negligent breaches last week.
With the GPS tracking device (FOB) being labelled ‘faulty’ by the franchises, the teams and the board worked on manual contact tracing to understand how Covid breached the bio-bubble.

Later, both players travelled with the rest of the team for practice, where Chakravarthy complained about not feeling well. The player was isolated in the masseur’s room while Warrier headed for practice, where Delhi Capitals’ net session was also going on.
Here’s where BCCI believes the breach occurred, as practice sessions – of KKR and Delhi Capitals – ended up being scheduled at the same time. Warrier met leg-spinner Amit Mishra during the nets and the two cricketers chatted for a while before parting ways.
Mishra returned to the team hotel after practice and complained about not feeling well. That is when the spinner too was put under isolation and further tests were carried out.
The franchises then worked towards a daily testing routine to identify if any other positive cases were emerging and concluded that the rest of the camp was negative.

  • Especially enjoyed dismissing Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard: Delhi Capitals spinner Amit Mishra

    By PTI
CHENNAI: Delhi Capitals spinner Amit Mishra, who picked up a match-winning four-wicket haul against Mumbai Indians, said he particularly enjoyed dismissing opposition skipper Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard.

Mishra led the bowling charge with figures of 4/24 to help the Delhi franchise restrict the Mumbai Indians to 137/9.

“The wickets of Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard were special for me because they have been game changers for MI for many years. I always go for wickets in every match that I play,” said the 38-year-old in a team release.

“I had a clear-cut plan about where I should bowl and how I could dismiss each of the big players in the Mumbai Indians side through my variations. And I am very happy that I could execute my plans. I am even more happy about the Delhi Capitals winning the match.”

The Delhi Capitals had just a day’s gap between their match against Punjab Kings in Mumbai and their game against Mumbai Indians in Chennai.

However, Mishra said that the quick change of venues didn’t affect the players.

“It was a challenge to be ready for a game in a different venue in a short period of time, but as professional cricketers we know how to motivate ourselves and recover for the next match.

“The physio’s work is very important in these situations. And once we step on the field, we focus on our performance and we don’t think about anything else.

“Asked if DC’s recent poor record against MI was playing on the players’ mind before the match on Tuesday, Mishra said, “In T20s, we have to forget the past and take a fresh start in every match that we play in, because anyone can change the match on any given day.

“I don’t think any of the players were thinking about our recent record against MI. Like (Delhi Capitals Head Coach) Ricky Ponting has told us, we take every day as a new day, and we play positively in every match.”

  • Always try to defeat Rohit Sharma in flight and not give him pace: Delhi Capitals spinner Amit Mishra

    By ANI
CHENNAI: Delhi Capitals spinner Amit Mishra has said that he always looks to beat Rohit Sharma in flight and he always looks to bowl the ball outside the Mumbai Indians’ skipper zone.

Leg-spinner Mishra spun a web over Mumbai Indians before Shikhar Dhawan and Steve Smith played knocks of 45 and 33 respectively as Delhi Capitals registered a win here at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday. Mishra had picked four wickets to help Delhi Capitals restrict Mumbai Indians to 137/9.

Delhi Capitals needed 15 runs in the last two overs and Shimron Hetmyer and Lalit Yadav ensured the side didn’t falter at the end. Moreover, Jasprit Bumrah’s two no-balls in the penultimate over made the job a lot easier for the batsmen.

“Obviously, I am feeling good with my performance as it came against the Mumbai Indians. Mumbai has the experience of playing here in Chennai but we managed to defeat them here. I am happy with my performance. I always try to bowl the ball outside Rohit’s zone and I do not give him pace. I always try to defeat him in flight so that he trys a shot that is not his strength,” Mishra told Prithvi Shaw in a video posted on the official website of IPL.

“I bowled the ball to stop the run flow so it can be said that I was lucky to take the wicket of Ishan Kishan. I will always try to as many wickets and it feel really food if I am able to break the record of Lasith Malinga for taking most number of wickets in the IPL,” he added.

Mumbai Indians were cruising towards a mammoth total having scored 55 runs in the first six overs but Mishra wreaked havoc and dismantled the batting order removing Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya, and Ishan Kishan.

Delhi is now placed at the second spot in the IPL points table with 6 points from four games. The side will next take on SunRisers Hyderabad on Sunday.

  • If allowed, first statue that will go up for Delhi Capitals is of Amit Mishra, says Parth Jindal

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal has said that leg-spinner Amit Mishra would be the first player from the franchise to have his statue outside the Arun Jaitley Stadium if the Indian Premier League (IPL) teams are allowed to put up statues outside their home stadiums.

Leg-spinner Amit Mishra spun a web over Mumbai Indians before Shikhar Dhawan and Steve Smith played knocks of 45 and 33 respectively as Delhi Capitals registered a win at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Mishra had picked four wickets to help Delhi Capitals restrict Mumbai Indians to 137/9.

“If IPL teams are ever allowed to put up statues outside their home stadiums by the @BCCI and state cricket bodies — there is no doubt in my mind that the first statue that will go up for us @DelhiCapitals will be that of @MishiAmit — what a wonderful servant he has been to DC,” tweeted Jindal.

Mishra is the second-highest wicket-taker in the history of the IPL as he has 164 wickets to his name from 152 matches.

He is also the only bowler in the league to take three hat-tricks. The veteran has been a long servant for Delhi Capitals and he still holds the key to their spin department.

Coming back to Tuesday’s game, Delhi Capitals needed 15 runs in the last two overs and Shimron Hetmyer and Lalit Yadav ensured the side didn’t falter at the end. Moreover, Jasprit Bumrah’s two no-balls in the penultimate over made the job a lot easier for the DC batsmen.

Earlier, Mumbai Indians were cruising towards a mammoth total having scored 55 runs in the first six overs, but Mishra wreaked havoc and dismantled the batting order removing Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya, and Ishan Kishan.

  • Old is gold: Virender Sehwag lauds Amit Mishra for match-winning show against Mumbai Indians

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: Former India batsman Virender Sehwag lauded spinner Amit Mishra for giving a match-winning performance against Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Tuesday.

“Old is gold. Amit Mishra proving why he is the second-highest wicket-taker in the history of IPL with an incredible spell and @DelhiCapitals showing it is possible to chase in Chennai by being sensible,” tweeted Sehwag.

Delhi Capitals needed 15 runs in the last two overs and Shimron Hetmyer and Lalit Yadav ensured the side didn’t falter at the end. Moreover, Jasprit Bumrah’s two no-balls in the penultimate over made the job a lot easier for the DC batsmen.

  • Delhi Capitals’ bench-strength good enough for another IPL team, says Ashwin

After registering an emphatic 59-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) here on Monday, Delhi Capitals’ (DC) off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin hailed the bench strength of the side, saying that it is good enough to form another Indian Premier League (IPL) team.

Before the match against RCB, Delhi received a big blow as spinner Amit Mishra was ruled out of the tournament due to a finger injury. In place of Mishra, Axar Patel was given a chance against the Virat Kohli-led side, and he responded impressively with figures of 2-18 from his four overs.
“That’s one of the beauty of this particular Delhi side. Even when my shoulder dislocated, Amit came in and played the role. Now he is injured, so Axar has come in and played the role. There is enough strength on our bench and sometimes when it comes to the IPL, the people coming out of that bench become very important. That bench is probably good enough to be another IPL team, it has got a lot of quality,” Ashwin said during the post-match press conference.
