  • Enforcement Directorate gets 8 day remand of Advocate Rajeev Kumar for blackmailing businessman

    RANCHI: Enforcement Directorate on Thursday secured an 8-day remand of advocate Rajiv Kumar, who is currently lodged at Alipur Jail in Bengal after being arrested by Kolkata police on July 31 along with Rs 50 lakh cash from his possession, on the charges of blackmailing a Kolkata-based businessman Amit Agrawal after filing a PIL against him in Jharkhand High Court. The special PMLA court of Prabhat Kumar Sharma of Ranchi civil court granted police custody of Rajiv Kumar to ED, effective from August 20.

    Allegedly, Kumar had filed a PIL in Ranchi High Court against a Kolkata-based businessman and was asking Rs 10 crore to withdraw the PIL. After negotiations, he allegedly settled at Rs 1 crore for which the first instalment of Rs 50 lakh was paid and he was caught red-handed with it.

    Kumar was produced before the PMLA court through video conferencing. The ED submitted before the special PMLA court that the agency has taken up a case for an investigation related to the seizure of Rs 50 lakh from the possession of Rajiv Kumar in which his police remand will be required.

    The FIR was originally lodged by the Kolkata police at Hare Street police station. The ED informed the court that the agency lodged an ECIR in Ranchi and Rajiv Kumar is the accused in this case.

  • ED likely to investigate Jharkhand HC advocate Rajeev Kumar’s extortion case

    RANCHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has decided to investigate the complaint lodged by the Kolkata-based businessman Amit Agrawal against advocate Rajeev Kumar for blackmailing him after filing a PIL against him in Jharkhand High Court.

    Sources in the Enforcement Directorate informed that the Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) in the case may be registered at the Ranchi Zonal Office of the ED.

    Kumar was arrested by the Kolkata police allegedly with Rs 50 lakh in his possession. Reportedly, Kumar had filed a PIL in Ranchi High Court against a Kolkata-based businessman and was asking Rs 10 crore to withdraw the PIL. After negotiations, he allegedly settled at Rs 1 crore for which the first instalment of Rs 50 lakh was paid and he was caught red-handed with it.

    Notably, Kolkata police have summoned Subodh Kumar, the former ED Deputy Director at Ranchi Zonal Office, who is currently posted in Odisha on the basis of some of his alleged WhatsApp conversations with advocate Rajeev Kumar.

    Meanwhile, a special Kolkata Court on Wednesday sent Kumar to 14 days of judicial custody. After his arrest on July 31, he was taken on six days of police remand for questioning.

    In between, the Kolkata police carried out raids at his Ranchi residence as well as a rice mill owned by his brother. On that basis, the Kolkata police demanded an additional remand period and the court granted another four days of police remand for him which concluded on Wednesday.

    RANCHI: The arrest of senior advocate Rajeev Kumar took a new turn on Tuesday after it came to light that the name of Amit Agrawal was not there in the PIL (4290/21), for which he has been arrested allegedly for demanding money to remove his name. He had apparently filed a PIL in Ranchi High Court against Kolkata-based businessman Amit Agrawal and was asking Rs 10 crore to withdraw his name from it.

    After negotiations, he allegedly settled at Rs 1 crore for which the first instalment of Rs 50 lakh was paid and he was caught red-handed with it. Subsequently, advocate Rajeev Kumar, also known as the PIL man of Jharkhand who has filed PILs seeking probe against CM Hemant Soren for alleged irregularities in the grant of mining leases and also on transactions of some shell companies purportedly operated by his family members and associates, was arrested by Kolkata Police on Sunday and sent on police custody on the charges of blackmailing a businessman after filing a PIL against him in Jharkhand High Court. 

    Coming in his support, former BJP minister and independent MLA Saryu Roy said Rajeev is victim of a well-known dirty trick in politics. “Anybody/everybody may be fixed this way or that way by dirty trick variants,” Roy posted on Twitter.
